Code found in official NVIDIA SHIELD Experience software showed a few clues that lead us to believe NVIDIA’s making something special.

Like a hybrid of all the NVIDIA SHIELD devices of past years, in comes Mystique.

NVIDIA created the longest-lasting, still active, still currently seeing updates NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV.

They also made a couple NVIDIA SHIELD tablets with Android, and an NVIDIA SHIELD “handheld”.

They’d make sure their NVIDIA-laden PC was up and running in one room, then play games (mirrored over a network) in another room – or anywhere else that had a web connection.

Code first discovered by XDA Developers in NVIDIA SHIELD Experience software shows a device codenamed Mystique.

A quick guide to this week's reveals

Roundup Here's your weekly dose of key announcements in the world of artificial intelligence.

Anything to distract from its 10nm problems, the cynics among us are thinking.

Neuromorphic computing loosely mimics the activity of a brain.

The circuits are programmed to fire like activated neurons passing information to the next group of neurons, and so on.

Loihi uses Intel's 14nm fabrication process, and has a total of 130,000 neurons and 130 million synapses, we're told.

Nvidia today debuted the Tesla T4 graphics processing unit (GPU) chip to speed up inference from deep learning systems in datacenters.

The T4 GPU packed with 2,560 CUDA cores, and 320 Tensor cores with the power to process queries nearly 40 times faster than a CPU.

Inference is the process of deploying trained AI models to power the intelligence imbued in services like visual search engines, video analysis tools, or when you ask an AI assistant like Alexa or Siri a question.

As part of its push to capture the deep learning market, two years ago, Nvidia debuted its Tesla P4 chip made especially for the deployment of AI models two years ago.

The T4 is more than 5 times faster than its predecessor the P4 at speech recognition inference and nearly 3 times faster at video inference.

Analysis by Nvidia found that nearly half of all inference performed with the P4 in the span of the past two years was related to videos, followed by speech processing, search, and natural language and image processing.

Codename references in the newest Nvidia Shield TV public release suggest there will be a new remote and controller.

If Nvidia is working on a new remote and controller, it stands to reason it is also working on a new Nvidia Shield TV.

In a statement, Nvidia neither confirmed nor denied that it is working on a new Shield TV.

A custom ROM developer over at XDA Developers discovered some new codename references in the latest public source for the Nvidia Shield TV media streamer.

It stands to reason that if Nvidia is working on a new controller and remote, it would also be working on a new Nvidia Shield TV unit altogether.

The Nvidia Shield TV — which runs on Android TV — first launched in 2015.

Although Nvidia officially announced its Turing family of graphics cards earlier this week, Team Green is only now sharing how the performance of the Nvidia RTX 2080 compares to the Nvidia GTX 1080

In some newly released presentation slides, Nvidia claims the Nvidia RTX 2080 hovers around being 1.5 times more performant than the last-generation Nvidia GTX 1080 in a multitude of games, including Epic Infiltrator, Wolfenstein II and Shadow of War (HDR).

Furthermore, if users activate a new Nvidia Turing feature known as Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS), they can expect up to two-times better performance in titles such as Final Fantasy XV (HDR), Ark: Survival Evolved and JX3, according to Nvidia.

Nvidia hasn’t disclosed all of the intricate details behind DLSS, but what we can tell you is that the process involves having Turing’s Tensor Cores “perform lightning-fast deep neural network processing” to apply “deep learning and AI to rendering techniques, resulting in crisp, smooth edges on rendered objects in games.”

We saw DLSS in action and a Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti was able to render Epic Infiltrator at a steady 85 frames per second (fps).

Right next to the Turing rig was a Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti-powered system that struggled to keep the same experience running near 45 fps with temporal anti-aliasing and supersampling turned on.

The Android TV-based smart television device NVIDIA SHIELD TV will soon have a mighty power.

The folks at NVIDIA revealed this week that they’ll be releasing GeForce NOW to the public with a new feature: personal game streaming.

In the past, the GeForce NOW platform allowed NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device owners to play AAA games streamed from NVIDIA’s own servers.

Now that restriction is about to be lifted, and games will be stream-friendly from one’s own home PC.

The difference between what NVIDIA offered in the past and what NVIDIA is about to have NOW with GeForce NOW is a little convoluted.

The fact that game streaming was available with NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV in the past is further confused by the fact that the original NVIDIA SHIELD handheld Android gaming device had GeForce NOW game streaming back a half-decade ago – sort of – that was called NVIDIA GameStream.

This week the folks at NVIDIA have revealed their NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card with Pascal GPU technology inside.

This graphics card is meant to be “sliding in between” the GTX 1080 and 1070 GPU cards already on the market, said NVIDIA today.

This graphics card will be released first in an NVIDIA Founder’s Edition through NVIDIA stores in participating countries, available on reserve basically immediately.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Pascal-based GPU rolls with a collection of high-powered specs.

Inside are 2,432 cores and 8 GB of memory.

That memory runs at 8Gbps, for a total bandwidth of 256 GB/s.

The system known as NVIDIA GeForce NOW was previously in free Beta for PC, Mac, and SHIELD TV, now it’ll be opened on Android devices of several sorts.

NVIDIA announced several feature updates to GeForce NOW today, also including the transition to RTX-enabled graphics processors for certain regions.

NVIDIA also gave a cryptic note on the timing for release of the full service, suggesting “the sun is starting to set on the free beta period.”

NVIDIA GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s game streaming service – you might quite easily mistake that title for the “NVIDIA GeForce Experience,” which is the company’s software for PCs who wish to auto-optimize games on their PC and/or automatically update their GPU drivers.

NVIDIA likes to use parts of brand names they’ve used in the past to make full use of brand-name recognition – GeForce GTX and GeForce RTX are brand names for graphics processors created by NVIDIA.

GeForce NOW beta has been rolling on NVIDIA SHIELD since way back in September of 2018.

This week the folks at NVIDIA have done a bit of clever re-branding to make their war with Apple TV more visible.

To do this, they’re now calling the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV something else – they’re calling it just SHIELD TV.

NVIDIA is also kicking the price down a bit by switching what’s available in the box, aiming for $179 – that’s approximately $21 cheaper than the previous least costly edition of this device.

The device we’re speaking about here is what we’ve reviewed this January – there still called NVIDIA SHIELD TV.

This device is the second-generation NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device, coming with a smaller body and a slightly different packaging of hardware than the first generation.

That first generation is still available from NVIDIA as the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro.
