At last week s Olympic opening ceremony in Rio, the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team marched in the Parade of Nations carrying flags emblazoned with the five-ring Olympics logo.

It was a powerful unifying gesture in a time marked by global unrest; these ten athletes were representing not just their war-torn countries, but the world.

But in a certain light, assigning this team the most universal sporting symbol on Earth was to deprive them an identity of their own.

What this group really needed was its own symbol.

A non-profit called The Refugee Nation commissioned artists to develop a flag and national anthem for the Olympic team that would represent the athletes and the growing number of refugees around the world.

We felt we could do more, say Artur Lipori and Caro Rebello, the co-founders of The Refugee Nation.

A Brazilian skateboarding sensation who went viral at the age of 7 while skating in fairy wings and a blue dress is back on the global stage but this time capturing more than just hearts: She’s taking home an Olympic medal.

Rayssa Leal, at 13, has become one of the youngest athletes to win an Olympic medal after competing in the first women’s street skateboarding event in Tokyo on Sunday.

Rayssa Leal of Brazil at Monday's awards ceremony at the Tokyo Olympics. The 13-year-old earned a silver medal in the women's street skateboarding event.

Her incredible silver medal moment ― shared with gold medalist Momiji Nishiya, also 13, and bronze winner Funa Nakayama, 16 ― came six years after a 14-second Vine video of her tumbling twice before successfully landing a heelflip off a set of stairs caught the attention of famed US skater Tony Hawk.

“I don’t know anything about it but it’s awesome,” Hawk tweeted at the time while sharing the video of what he called a “fairytale heelflip.”

In 2021, Leal is not only shredding handrails and crushing gender stereotypes in a male-dominated sport but is doing so alongside Hawk, who joined her at the skate park in Tokyo.

“Six years ago he introduced me to the world of skateboarding by sharing my video wearing a fairy costume. Today, he filmed me at the Olympics,” she posted on Instagram with photos of him standing alongside her. “This is all so amazing, I’m living a dream!”

“You have exceeded all expectations!” Hawk wrote back. “It’s been an honor to be involved in some small way. And thanks for the clips!”

How flipping awesome.

If you’re looking to follow all the action throughout the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Apple News just may be the place for you to go.

The iEmpire is looking to up its game, so to speak, when it comes to sports news by partnering with NBC Olympics to present a dedicated Winter Olympics section in its news feed.

So now, if you scroll to the “For You” section of Apple News, you’ll see a selection of videos, articles, and infographics from a number of sources, all dedicated to the latest and greatest happenings in PyeongChang, South Korea.

But because this is Apple, it’s obviously not stopping at just delivering your news content.

The new dedicated portal will also feature a planner that can help you determine when you need to plant yourself in front of a television (or computer or mobile device) screen to catch your favorite events.

And if there are too many to remember, you can also add events directly to your calendar from Apple News.

With the Olympics officially starting and the swimming events guaranteed to set a few more records, you have to wonder how swimmers can continue to improve?

Haven t we reached the pinnacle of a human s physicality by now?

If we get any more good at swimming in the water, we re going to continue doping, or we re going to become merpeople.

Whether or not we ve reached our physical peak, we can still get better at swimming, at least according to researchers at Bielefeld University in Germany who, in conjunction with a system created by Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology CITEC , hope to improve swimmers technique by utilising sound data.

These are connected to a measuring instrument, which transmits data to a computer, which then converts the measurements into sound, which the person can hear over headphones.

If a swimmer registers how the flow pressure changes by hearing, he can better judge, for instance, how he can produce more thrust at similar energy costs, said Dr. Bodo Ungerechts, who worked on the project.

LONDON — The countdown until the official opening of the Rio 2016 Olympics is officially on.

First-time Olympians are gearing up for the most exciting and career-defining games of their lives so far.

But, the Olympic journey didn't begin here for most Olympians.

Indeed, British Sailing Team member Nicola Groves began her Olympic journey four years ago while many of us were still reeling after the excitement of the London 2012 Olympics.

"I started training for Rio just after the Olympics in 2012, so it's been four years of full-time sailing, but, really, I've been preparing for this for over 15 years — I first started sailing when I was 10 years old," 27-year-old Groves told Mashable.

Many of today s greatest Olympians have been training since they were very young.

But how young is too young to start preparing for Olympic glory?

According to LaGuardia Cross, that s a ridiculous question.

In his hilarious new video, How to Train a Toddler for the Olympics, the dad shows how he s molding his 1-year-old daughter Amalah into a champion.

The father-daughter training regimen includes kitchen floor cleaning drills, putting toys away exercises, and nap hurdles.

Unsurprisingly, Cross has opted not to inform his toddler that these are not actual Olympic events.

Olympic officials have confirmed that a cyber attack took place during the event’s opening ceremonies in Pyeongchang, according to Reuters.

The organizers say that while television and internet access was affected, it “it had not compromised any critical part of their operations.”

According to reports, internet access and Wi-Fi shut down on Friday during the game’s opening ceremonies.

The website for the games also went down, preventing attendees from printing out tickets.

Pyeongchang organizing committee spokesman Sung Baik-you confirmed that an attack took place, but that the issues have since been resolved.

He also said that investigators wouldn’t reveal the source of the attack.
