Opera had a couple of tumultuous years behind it, but it looks like the Norwegian browser maker (now in the hands of a Chinese consortium) is finding its stride again and refocusing its efforts on its flagship mobile and desktop browsers.

Before the sale, Opera offered a useful stand-alone and built-in VPN service.

Somehow, the built-in VPN stopped working after the acquisition.

My understanding is that this had something to do with the company being split into multiple parts, with the VPN service ending up on the wrong side of that divide.

Today, it’s officially bringing this service back as part of its Android app.

The promise of the new Opera VPN in Opera for Android 51 is that it will give you more control over your privacy and improve your online security, especially on unsecured public WiFi networks.

Regardless of whether you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel" in that crazy audio sample that's blowing up the internet right now, you're probably curious where that robotic voice came from, and why it's saying "Laurel" at all.

We now have the answer, according to Wired (paywall), and it's a pretty astounding one.

A member of the original Broadway cast of CATS.

And he allegedly recorded the audio you're hearing -- the word "Laurel" -- for this specific page at Vocabulary.com.

"We hired a bunch of opera singers to record 200,000 words, basically," Vocabulary.com co-founder Marc Tinkler told Wired.

"We set [the singers] up with laptops with really great microphones in a DIY sound booth.

Opera’s VPN has no usage limits, comes with strong 256-bit encryption, and doesn’t require a login, so your data isn’t even stored by Opera itself.

If you’re unfamiliar with the idea, VPNs, or virtual private networks, are pieces of software much beloved by the security-conscious on the internet.

While the specifics vary between popular VPNs, you can expect every VPN to sport strong encryption, as well as a variety of servers around that help to hide your physical location from anyone looking to profit by accessing it.

It’ll cost you to access most VPNs, even on Android, so it’s surprising that Opera is offering its impressive VPN for free.

Connecting to the VPN is easy.

Simply download Opera’s browser from the Google Play Store, then access the Settings menu and turn on the VPN.

Opera has announced that it is adding a built-in VPN to its Opera for Android browser in an effort to better protect its users safety online.

The company is already quite familiar with VPNs as it launched and later discontinued its free VPN app for Android called Opera VPN.

Now the company has taken things a step further by including a VPN inside its Android browser and beta users around the world will be the first to test out the new feature.

Opera explained its decision to add a VPN to its browser in a blog post announcing the new feature, saying:

“This exciting new feature in Opera for Android is designed to empower you with increased control and privacy of your browsing.

You no longer need to download separate, paid-for apps to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi.

Whether you value your privacy or live in an oppressive state, VPN apps are a solid way to circumvent restrictions and stay (somewhat) hidden on the web.

But fans of the Opera VPN app for Android and iOS will have to find another service, as it’ll be shutting down at the end of the month.

The company made the announcement on its website, but didn’t give a clear reason for the shutdown.

“We’re discontinuing the Opera VPN app for iOS and Android on April 30, 2018.

We’re helping to make sure your privacy is still looked after,” read an excerpt of the announcement.

In lieu of the Opera VPN app, the website encouraged users to sign up for its SurfEasy VPN service.

Only a few years ago, Opera Max was the rising star in the browser maker’s portfolio.

The service offered a system-wide data-saving proxy that funnelled all app data through Opera’s servers to compress images and videos.

Now, however, Max is heading for the deadpool.

The company, which is now owned by a consortium of Chinese firms, today announced that it will shut down Max.

“Opera has now decided to discontinue Opera Max.

The product had a substantially different value proposition than our browser products, and represented a different focus for Opera,” the company writes in its announcement.

An opera about the life of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will open this weekend (22 July), telling the story of the man behind the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Called The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, the opera is two years in the making and will be shown by The Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico, US.

Kicking off on Saturday, the opera will then be performed on four dates across August.

Ticket range from $114 to $310 (£88 to £239).

The 19-scene opera begins with the launch of the original iPhone in January, 2007 and carves a path both backwards and forwards through Jobs' well-told career.

Described as very "nonlinear", the opera "leaps around in time" to include scenes from Jobs' creation of the Apple I, his relationship with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and his brief time at university.

Opera has released a new version of its web browser specially designed for gamers.

Opera GX includes a raft of features tailored to game fans, including Twitch integration, optimization tools and Razer Chroma-style customizable colors.

Opera teased the new browser in May with a rather cryptic announcement that it was working on "a new and special version of our browser made with those of you who play games in mind".

The wait is now over, and an early access version of Opera GX is available to download and try for yourself.

The browser's default homepage is something called GX Corner, which gathers deals on games from different retailers and includes a news feed with top gaming-related headlines from various sources (including TechRadar).

Opera GX also includes tools for limiting the system resources used by your browser, so you can keep it running in the background while you stream without it having a detrimental effect on your frame rate.

Opera today announced a new mobile browser, Opera Touch, that shows that there’s still plenty of room for a competitor in the mobile browsing world.

Opera Touch takes some ideas from the company’s experimental Opera Neon desktop browser and packages it into a highly usable package for Android, with an iOS version coming soon.

It’s not so much that Touch reinvents the wheel, but that it seems to have been designed with the idea of putting the user first.

This starts with small touches, like putting the tab switcher and access to your bookmarks at the bottom of the page, so that you never have to do some finger gymnastics to reach the top of your screen again (or use two hands, which I guess is also an option…).

Safari users are surely quite familiar with having access to these features at the bottom of the screen, but on the main Android browsers, it’s been oddly absent.

When you hold it down, this ‘fast action’ button also gives you easy access to your tabs and a simple tap lets you quickly start a search or type a URL.

If you recently purchased a new high-end TV, only to turn it on and feel disappointment and confusion about the weird video motion, you’re not alone.

Some call it the ‘BBC effect,’ referring to the similarity between motion on new televisions and the motion effect on older BBC shows that used to bother so many American viewers.

The same motion effect can be found in some theaters, depending on the technology they’re using.

Some people really do like this technology, and there’s nothing wrong with that…but they’re in a minority despite the feature’s existence for the last handful of years.

If you fall into the latter category, you can turn it off for good.

The exact method to turn off your television’s motion-smoothing effect will depend on the unit’s manufacturer, its model, and its year.

Forget Web 2.0, we’re now at Web 3.

Or at least that’s what some in the tech industry are saying.

It simply a catchier term for the geekier blockchains that tech pundits have gone crazy over.

Curiously, browser-maker Opera is knee-deep in this movement, adding features into its browsers that integrate directly with cryptocurrencies and blockchains.

Now it is bringing those same Web 3 functions to iOS, putting it on par with Opera’s desktop and Android browsers.

Although most often associated with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, the true hallmarks of blockchains are cryptography and decentralization.

Instead of getting $1.2 billion, Opera will have to settle for just half of that.

That is the new deal that the once extremely popular mobile web browser maker and a consortium of Chinese Internet firms have reached after the original, more lucrative offer didn't get approved in time.

The new deal also involves only selling parts of Opera's overall business, but it will naturally be the most significant parts, and the very parts that could cause some concern from privacy advocates and some governments.

Opera was really just the victim of rotten luck, or so it seems.

The original deal, which was put in place early this year, was well accepted by Opera's board of directors and seemed good to go.

Neither have actually given a thumbs down, at least not yet.

You just got a new TV, got it all set up, and excitedly fired it up for the first time.

What is wrong with your new TV?!

It isn’t 4K resolution, HDR, or even the panel technology in the TV.

What you’re witnessing is actually just a picture setting that creates a phenomenon commonly known as the “Soap Opera Effect.” Below, we’ll tell you what it is, how it works, and most importantly, how to turn it off.

Since TV isn’t delivered at this frame rate, though, motion smoothing came along as a way to “fake” a higher frame rate by inserting images in between the actual 30 or 60 frames per second that come from your cable box, game console, or antenna.

Motion smoothing works fine for sports programming and video games because of the way that content is recorded and/or produced, but we’re actually used to seeing lower frame rates in many TV shows and movies, most of which are at 24 frames per second.
