After co-founding Politico, John Harris is stepping down from his role as editor in chief and will be replaced by Matt Kaminski, currently the publication’s global editor.

Harris will continue to serve as chairman of the editorial oversight committee, as well as editor in chief of Politico Europe.

He will also be writing a column about the 2020 election.

“As I looked out at our newsrooms in the United States and Europe I saw journalists having impact on the important stories and wondered enviously, ‘I think those guys might be having more fun than I am.’ No longer,” Harris wrote in a memo to staff.

Publisher Robert Allbritton said in a memo to staff that Harris will remain “emphatically in a place of Politico leadership,” and praised Kaminski for being a leader who has shown “tireless ambition and creativity” at his time at Politico.

Kaminski, who has been at Politico for more than four years, joined from The Wall Street Journal.

An email intrusion targeting a key Republican campaign committee allowed unknown people to steal thousands of sensitive emails from four senior aides, Politico reported Tuesday.

The attack on the National Republican Congressional Committee, the main group that works to elect Republicans to the US House of Representatives, allowed the person or group responsible to monitor the aides’ email accounts for several months, Politico said.

The intrusion was detected in April by a managed security services provider the NRCC had retained to monitor the security of its network.

The unnamed provider informed NRCC officials, who in turn alerted security firm CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike, which was called in to investigate the Russian government’s 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee, had already been retained by the NRCC when the intrusion was discovered in April, Politico said.

None of the information obtained in the attack has appeared in public, Politico said, citing party officials.

Are we alone in the universe?

The question has been debated for ages.

Most recently, US Navy pilots who think they spotted a UFO will reportedly be getting guidelines for logging what they've seen.

The US Navy began drafting the new forms after multiple sightings of highly advanced aircraft trespassing on military formations, Politico reported on Tuesday.

The Navy wasn't immediately available for comment but told Politico it takes these sightings seriously.

"There have been a number of reports of unauthorized and/or unidentified aircraft entering various military-controlled ranges and designated air space in recent years," the Navy told Politico.

In an email sent to FCC commissioners’ offices this week, the agency’s chief technology officer expressed concerns about today’s net neutrality repeal proposal, according to a report from Politico.

The publication, citing FCC sources, reports that Eric Burger, who took the CTO job in October, wrote in the email that the proposal failed to properly account for concerns about blocking or throttling websites.

"Unfortunately, I realize we do not address that at all," Burger wrote, according to Politico.

"If the ISP is transparent about blocking legal content, there is nothing the [Federal Trade Commission] can do about it unless the FTC determines it was done for anti-competitive reasons.

Allowing such blocking is not in the public interest."

The FCC told Politico that the email was part of a normal editing process, and Burger has since told the publication that his concerns have been "fully addressed" after language was tweaked in the proposal.
