UEFA (Union of European Football Association) announced today that Konami is ending its 10-year partnership with the organization.

Konami publishes the yearly Pro Evolution Soccer franchise.

The UEFA license was one of the few in the soccer world that Konami’s series had over Electronic Arts’ Fifa games, which outsell Pro Evolution Soccer every year.

UEFA, which represents the national football associations of Europe, holds the UEFA Champions League, one of soccer’s most prestigious tournaments.

The competition has been a part of the Pro Evolution Soccer series since 2008.

Konami has scaled down its game development after releasing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015, but Pro Evolution Soccer has remained one of its few ongoing console franchises.

Luis Suárez’s unlikely PR revival is seemingly complete, as he fronts Konami’s new partnership with FC Barcelona in the latest iteration of Pro Evolution Soccer.

While official licences remain to Fifa’s advantage, PES has been focusing on gameplay.

Close control, once the defining feature of early PES games, makes another step forward with a silky first touch, attack-minded dribbling and off-the-ball movement.

Another welcome change is the slower and more natural pace of play, while player jostling, deflections and goalie spills feel unpredictable and lifelike.

Player attributes also feel accurate, including the oddly fun addition of a playable Usain Bolt character to rival Arsenal’s speed demon, Héctor Bellerin.

PES Productions is fully aware of the ups and downs the Pro Evolution Soccer series has been through over the years; particularly the last decade.

Prior to detailing what's coming in PES 2017, a graph was shown to the assembled journalists at a preview event just outside of London, depicting the lull during which EA Sports' Fifa series established commercial and critical dominance – that is, before last year's switcheroo.

Why advertise with us

On the day of the game's official announcement, IBTimes UK sat down with an early build of the new game either side of a presentation outlining the gameplay tweaks that are being implemented in PES 2017.

When the game launched in mid-September, it arrived without up-to-date squads – a must for any football game.

To show this off, we were shown a side-by-side comparison – which in the few select examples displayed just how bad some of the old models were.

Bhatti told us that the PES team was always chasing the Fox Engine team to get the most out of the engine that powered last year's game, and Metal Gear Solid 5.

After 20 hours on the pitch in Pro Evolution Soccer 2017, I've got a newfound respect for defenders.

They clearly know what they're doing: after all, with the game's new adaptive AI, it was five hours before I scored my first goal.

It was a few games into the PES's returning Master League, a chance to fill your team of choice East London for me: for the uninitiated, this is the unlicensed version of West Ham that boasts all of the same players but not the kit, badge or real name.

, Danny Welbeck was up front in his debut, a cracking pass from Victor Moses out on the wing set him up, and it screamed in past the keeper.

Welbeck was restrained in celebration, not because he wasn't excited about scoring on his debut, but because I'd forgotten I had to direct the goal celebration myself and was taking a drink of water.

PES 2017 continues this tradition.

Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, and Paris-Saint Germain all play very differently in real life, and that's ably represented in PES.

Combine that with instructions for fullbacks to attack higher up the pitch when in possession of the ball, and your wingers to cut inside at every opportunity, and you're extremely close to how real Liverpool currently plays under its German coach.

Having your target player pluck a rushed clearance out of the air on his chest, followed up by a dainty layoff to a midfielder in a bid to launch the perfect counter-attack is a joy.

When playing against the AI you're liable to come up against any number of strategies, with weaker teams often relying on punting the ball long to overcome a lacklustre midfield, while stronger teams play with far more confidence.

Sliding into an opponent's ankles should only be necessary if you're playing against someone with the dribbling talents of Messi or Griezmann.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 on the left, Fifa 17 on the right.

EA Sports' Fifa versus Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer hasn't been a competitive rivalry for years.

Fifa sells more now – a lot more – and the relative quality of either title never translates into massive shifts in sales, but PES is steadily gaining ground.

It was the product of years of toil following the series' fall from grace at the turn of the Xbox 360/PS3 generation.

PES could well have been put to rest, but it endured, hopeful of a return to the glory days between PES 3 and PES 6.

Fifa still trumps PES in terms of features and certainly in terms of presentation, but when it comes to gameplay it's starting to seriously lag behind.
