Regenerative braking is a pretty cool technology, and it definitely works to help extend the range of an electric vehicle, but is it enough to charge an EV on its own?

One intrepid YouTuber wanted to find out, so in a video published recently, he decided to flat-tow his Model 3 with another car.

In case you're not familiar with how regenerative braking works, it basically uses the motion of the wheels to turn the armature inside the electric motor to generate current.

Essentially, it turns your EV's drive motor into a big alternator.

In theory, this should allow a driver to use a tow strap to pull their electric vehicle and put some charge in their battery.

In this instance, Matt from the channel Tech Forum used a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi to flat-tow his Model 3 with Version 9 software around a small residential loop at speeds of around 20 miles per hour.

Carmakers have already figured out how to capture the energy lost to slowing a car.

Rather than slow a vehicle with conventional friction brakes that turn forward momentum into heat, hybrid and EVs spin their electric motors in reverse.

This both slows the car and generates electricity, which later can be used to power the vehicle.

Turns out, there's still more energy to be captured that is currently going to waste in modern automobiles: the kinetic energy generated by the movement of the car's suspension.

Engineers at Audi have created a prototype shock absorber, called 'eROT,' that both smoothes the ride on a bumpy road and generates electricity that — just like regenerative braking — can be used to propell the car and, in turn, save fuel.

On the eROT system, traditional shock absorbers are replaced with horizontally mounted electric motors.

Hybrids and electric cars use regenerative braking to turn heat into useful electricity, but there may be other sources of energy in cars that are going to waste.

Audi has discussed using the up-and-down motion of shock absorbers to generate electricity, and now it has a working prototype system with the attractive name eROT.

Combined with a 48-volt electrical system, Audi believes this energy-recovering suspension can both provide extra electrical power and increase suspension adjustability.

The suspension system uses a lever arm that absorbs the motion of the wheel as it moves over different surfaces.

The arm transfers that motion through gearing to an electric motor, which converts it into electricity.

Audi claims eROT recovered an average 100 to 150 watts of power during testing on German roads, corresponding to carbon-dioxide emissions cuts of 4.8 grams per mile.

It s similar to how the Chevy Volt works, where the gasoline tank recharges the batteries.

That s not the only similarity to another company that Nikola Motor Company has.

For a $750 reservation $42,000 MSRP , you can get in line for 520 hp of all-electric, waterproof driving.

The Zero plugs in like most EVs do to recharge the 440-volt lithium-ion batteries rather than using CNG and a turbine, though it does have solar panels on the roof to power the 12V battery.

It’s Saturday in Brooklyn, and I’m sitting in the grandstands, 30 paces from the track, as a bevy of race cars shoot by.

You know it beforehand, but still it comes as a surprise: Formula E, the all-electric equivalent to the famed Formula 1 circuit race, is conspicuously sedate.

The motor is quieter than the braking, unless the motor is running in reverse as a regenerative brake, to recharge the battery.

The drivers have to swap cars because, after about half an hour, each car’s battery is tapped out.

The eerie silence lets me speak easily to my corporate hosts, the electrical experts from TE Connectivity who handle the wiring for the MS Amlin Andretti Formula E team.

Or that’s the thinking behind the new Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) that was officially launched at the Natural Products Expo West trade show last week.

“[The USDA] Organic [label] is super important—thank goodness it was put into play,” says Birgit Cameron, senior director of Patagonia Provisions, an arm of Patagonia that aims to solve environmental issues by supporting climate-friendly food producers.

“The ROC is absolutely never meant to replace it, but rather to keep it strong to the original intention.”

Like other newly proposed certifications—including the “The Real Organic Project,” which was also announced last week—one of the Alliance’s primary goals is to require growers to focus on soil health and carbon sequestration.

But, as Cameron explains, it is also an attempt to be a “north star” for the industry as a certification that encompasses the health of the planet, animal welfare, and social fairness.

ROC-certified producers must also meet the requirements of one of the existing certifications for animal welfare and social fairness, such as Animal-Welfare Approved or Fair Trade Certified.

Tuesday, January 16, 2018, London, UK: Researchers at Insilico Medicine, AgeX Therapeutics and the Biogerontology Research Foundation have published a landmark study titled "Use of deep neural network ensembles to identify embryonic-fetal transition markers: repression of COX7A1 in embryonic and cancer cells" in the journal Oncotarget.

In the study, researchers used deep learning techniques to analyze gene expression data in embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines at varying stages of development in order to characterize the gene expression profile of cells right at the boundary of the embryonic-fetal transition, when embryos become fetuses and experience a remarkable reduction in their regenerative capacity.

Mimicking the gene expression profile of cells prior to the embryonic fetal transition in adult tissues and organs is the concept underlying one of the central and most ambitious therapeutic modalities being pursued by AgeX Therapeutics, namely induced Tissue Regeneration (iTR).
