You shouldn't expect the OnePlus 3T to offer Daydream VR support anytime soon, according to the company's CEO.

OnePlus CEO Carl Pei has confirmed that there are no plans to add support for Google's Daydream VR platform to its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 3T.

Ahead of the European launch of the OnePlus 3T on 28 November, several key members of the OnePlus team took to Reddit yesterday 23 November to address the mildly controversial mid-cycle upgrade to its OnePlus 3 flagship.

With Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 powering the Chinese manufacturer's latest device and an Android 7.0 Nougat update in the pipeline, all the pieces appeared to be in place for the OnePlus 3T to become one of the first non-Pixel smartphones to support Google's mobile VR platform as well as the recently released Daydream View headset.

However, when asked about the phone's potential compatibility during the Reddit AMA, Pei - writing under the username "carpe02" - confirmed that there are "no plans right now."

The often outspoken OnePlus boss continued: "Why?

An upcoming phone by Chinese phonemaker Oppo supposedly has a unique take on the pop-up selfie camera that's designed to hide the selfie camera when it's not in use.

The camera pop-up is wedge-shaped, which looks less fragile than other popup selfie cameras.

Hiding the selfie camera when it's not in use is the best way we've seen so far to keep a full-screen display without interruptions from an iPhone X-style notch or Samsung Galaxy S10-style camera cutout.

Photos of a smartphone called "Reno" from Chinese smartphone maker Oppo were leaked on Slashleaks, and it goes to show how smartphone makers are still innovating to give users a full-screen display and a selfie camera.

Indeed, there's no way to fully hide a selfie camera behind a screen, which has led companies like Apple, Samsung, and another dozen or so phonemakers to use a notch or display cutouts that let the selfie camera take photos.

A partially disassembled Fairphone 2.

Back in 2013, Fairphone managed to pull off something revolutionary in the smartphone industry: a handset that put ethics front and centre.

Two years later, it did something just as groundbreaking: it launched a truly modular handset ahead of rivals like Google and LG.

With the first batch of Fairphone 2s soon to be reaching their new owners, we try out the ethical smartphone to find out how well it works.

Six months after shipping the Fairphone 2, a handset designed to enable the average user to swap out components when they get broken or damaged, Fairphone is considering the next step for its modular device.

For Fairphone, the impulse behind building a modular device was an environmental one: a way to extend the lifespan of mobile handsets and so cut the number that end up in landfill.

BlackBerry, the former smartphone maker, is suing Twitter for alleged patent infringement.

If this sounds familiar, it may be because BlackBerry filed a patent infringement suit against Facebook last year.

In its complaint, BlackBerry alleges Twitter has infringed and continues to infringe on six of its patents, which cover things like push notifications, silencing notifications for a message thread and mobile advertising techniques.

BlackBerry, which refers to itself as a pioneer in mobile messaging, alleges Twitter “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative user interface and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”

As noted above, BlackBerry sued Facebook last year alleging patent infringement.

At the time, BlackBerry cited seven patents that relate to security, user interface features, battery-efficient status updates, mobile messaging in games and, similarly to its issue with Twitter, silencing notifications.

The Galaxy Note used to stand out — literally.

As one of the first truly big smartphones — the original “phablet” back before giant phones became the norm — the old Note models would catch your eye when you saw them in a store or out in public, like an NBA player on a court with a bunch of middle-schoolers.

But in the almost decade since the original Galaxy Note launched, the smartphone industry has changed quite a bit.

If last year’s Note 9 had the problem of not differentiating itself from the previous year’s Note 8, this year’s Note 10 lineup looks to have the issue of not doing enough to stand out from the other six — yes, six — Galaxy flagships that Samsung has announced in 2019.

Rumors are still circulating about how many Note 10 models will be released.

More importantly, how does Samsung convince you that the Note 10 or Note 10 Plus is worth your money?

In some ways the new LG G7 ThinQ shares more in common with the LG V30, than it does its G Series predecessors.

The smartphone company’s 2018 Android Oreo flagship is its latest bet on artificial intelligence (AI) as a mobile must-have, baking machine smarts into everything from the camera to dedicated hardware.

For the US, it’s paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM.

No wireless charging, sadly, but there is at least IP68 water and dust resistance.

You do at least get a choice as to whether you see it, however: flip a toggle in the settings and the G7 fills in the top with a clean horizontal bar instead.

There’s no dedicated secondary panel, true, but it does keep the notification icons out of the way of what else is on-screen.

There’s a company by the name BBK Group that you should get to know, if you don’t know already.

Where Apple made their mark in the smartphone world with a single brand, iPhone, BBK Group (aka BBK Electronics Corporation, or BBK) went completely the opposite direction, creating not only a wide variety of different smartphone models, but running a set of different smartphone companies that, to the average consumer, look like completely separate entities.

If one combines the various brands owned by BBK into a single count, they ship more phones than any other single brand.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung currently has 20.6% of the global smartphone shipments for the third quarter of the year 2019.

That’s very similar to the share suggested by Strategy Analytics for this same period – they suggest Samsung has 21.3% of the global smartphone shipments for the quarter.

Counterpoint Research says Huawei has 17.6% of the market, and Apple has 11.8%.
