Millennials have already lost so much: A relatively secure housing market, the hope of stable careers, and an Earth that wasn’t completely littered with the mistakes of Baby Boomers.

Today, planetary geologist Kirby Runyon will present a new definition of “planet” at the 48th Lunar Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, undoubtedly rekindling the flames of controversy.

Runyon’s definition does away with a key International Astronomical Union (IAU) requirement for planethood—namely, that the object is massive enough to clear the neighbourhood around its orbit.

Instead, it focuses on the geophysical properties that set planets apart from smaller and less complex objects.

A planet, according to Runyon, is “A substellar mass body that has never undergone nuclear fusion and that has enough gravitation to be round due to hydrostatic equilibrium regardless of its orbital parameters.” By this definition, many moons in our solar system—including our own—would be reclassified as planets.

If you can’t justify a billion dollar mission without having to change around whatever everybody thinks about the planet, really someone should take away the keys to your spacecraft.

New research suggests this visitor from afar likely came from a binary star system, and that astronomers should be on the lookout for both interstellar asteroids and comets.

Traveling at a mind-bending speed of 67,100 miles per hour (the equivalent of mach 88 at sea level), the distinctly cigar-shaped ‘Oumuamua zipped through our Solar System in October 2017.

The closest it came to Earth was 20.5 million miles (33 million km), and with its speed and extreme angle of entry, the object headed back towards interstellar space.

Scientists made sure it wasn’t an alien spaceship, they determined its chemical composition, and even wondered if similar objects may have seeded Earth with extraterrestrial microbes in the past.

The latest research, published this week in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, investigated the types of environments most likely to produce and fling such objects into interstellar space.

‘Oumuamua, according to the new study, most likely originated in a binary star system, one reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s fictional homeworld of Tatooine.

Whatever processes caused Jupiter to be enriched in heavier elements may have laid the groundwork for the formation of Earth, Venus, and Mars.

But we can t be certain until we have a better idea of what s really cooking inside our friendly neighborhood gas giant s core.

For centuries, astronomers have been enchanted by the planet Jupiter, that roiling sea of clouds punctuated by a glowering red eye.

Using the Very Large Array in New Mexico, a team led by the University of California, Berkeley, has produced a map of Jupiter s atmosphere down to 100 km 60 miles depth, revealing the gas giant s noxious, ammonia-rich clouds and atmospheric circulation patterns in unprecedented detail.

But it s also a mere taste of what s to come later this summer, when NASA s Juno Mission begins probing into the entirely unexplored region at Jupiter s core.

Alternating ammonia hotspots and deserts helps explain why, when NASA s Galileo probe made its suicide plunge into Jupiter s atmosphere in 1995, it recorded nitrogen levels much higher than planetary scientists expected.

Whatever processes caused Jupiter to be enriched in heavier elements may have laid the groundwork for the formation of Earth, Venus, and Mars.

But we can t be certain until we have a better idea of what s really cooking inside our friendly neighborhood gas giant s core.
