Just last month, Lucasfilm and Disney executives were trying to decide whether Rogue One, as a stand-alone tale in the Star Wars universe, would begin with the franchise s iconic open crawl.

Now it appears that they ve found their answer: No.

You know, we re in the midst of talking about it, but I don t think these films will have an opening crawl, Kennedy said of the possibility thatRogue One would include the familiar Star Wars trope.

I think that s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.

Edwards left the question a bit more up in the air.

I think basically there s a lot of things that I probably can t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that, he joked.

The acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney in 2012 eventually brought with it a huge change for Star Wars fans: The dissolution of the Expanded Universe, which had been considered as part of the saga’s vast canon for over two decades.

But apparently, it was one EU moment in particular that really convinced Lucasfilm to start all over.

The Expanded Universe was filled with infamous moments that many Star Wars fans were happy to have lost (and plenty whose absence still stings today).

Perhaps one of the most controversial came in R.A. Salvatore’s 1999 novel Vector Prime, which saw Chewbacca become the first major movie casualty of the EU when he sacrificed himself to save the youngest son of Han and Leia, Anakin Solo, and... was killed by having a moon dropped on him?

Look, it was a whole thing.

But anyway, speaking to Syfy’s Fandom Files podcast about his role at Lucasfilm, Leland Chee—who’s part of the company’s vast story group and is also known as the “Keeper of the Holocron;” he’s one of the definitive archivists of Star Wars canon, both past and present—revealed that it was Chewie’s death in particular that helped kick off the decision to scrap the EU out of continuity altogether ahead of the new movies:

Traditionally, a Jedi makes his own lightsaber.

But sometimes, they need a special touch.

Or they’re a Sith, and they don’t have the patience to build a complicated laser handle with proper safety features.

Kylo Ren could’ve used lightsaber craftsman help, let’s be honest.

When that happens, they call Valin Horn.

The star of this silly fan film, Valin is the expert.

I was kind of a whiner about it: Yes, I did see The Force Awakens, and yes, I mostly liked it, but I kept telling friends that I didn t need to buy a ticket to a new Star Wars movie every year for the rest of my life.

Despite my protests, I was watching another Star Wars movie, but even then, I told myself it was for journalism s sake.

As a result, the actors do most of the heavy lifting to make this feel like more than a generic band of ragtag rebels — but hey, that was true in the original trilogy, too.

Rogue One in particular focuses on how the Rebel Alliance gets its hands on the plans for the Death Star — the same Death Star plans that Princess Leia is fleeing with in the very first shot of the very first film.

It seemed particularly worrying since this is a franchise that has a record of filling in backstory in the most disappointing way …

But it turns out that Rogue One s setup is just what was needed — it allows director Gareth Edwards to tell a very different sort of Star Wars story.

The ultimate power in the Star Wars universe can also be the ultimate power on your kitchen counter now that the Death Star has been turned into a two-slice toaster with settings for light, dark, burnt, and Alderaan d.

The toaster won t be available until late September at the earliest, but you can pre-order it now for around $66 which gets you the Death Star-shaped appliance with a cool-to-the-touch housing, reheat and defrost settings, and a removable crumb tray which you can pretend is actually a trash compactor.

As far as toasters go it s not cheap, but it has a secret weapon to separate you from your hard-earned cash.

Every slice of toast that pops out of this Death Star is branded with the Star Wars logo.

You won t even want to spread jam or peanut butter on your toast and risk covering up this appliance s best feature.

After the success of "The Force Awakens" and "Rogue One," it's hard to imagine "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" would become one of the most divisive films in the franchise.

The film has been in theaters for barely than a week and there's already a Change.org petition asking Disney remove it from the official Star Wars canon and "re-make Episode VIII properly."

In the novel "Children of the Jedi," Luke gets trapped on an Imperial Dreadnaught, where the spirit of a long-dead Jedi living in the ship's computer helps him open doors and hide from his attackers.

Luke falls in love with the possessed spaceship computer and eventually starts dating her after she transfers her consciousness into the body of one of Skywalker's dying students.

By comparison, Han and Leia's romance was pretty straightforward: Boy rescues girl, girl calls boy a nerfherder, boy gets frozen in carbonite, girl rescues boy.

In "Empire Strikes Back," Darth Vader hires bounty hunters to track down the Millennium Falcon, and says he wants the Rebels alive, famously telling Boba Fett: "No disintegration."

BB-8 Force Band Release Date

BB-8 is probably the best droid in the Star Wars universe, even if it made its debut only in Episode VII.

The star of The Force Awakens also happens to be a popular toy, and Sphero s BB-8 toy is an awesome, but also pricey, gift idea.

If you already own one or plan to buy it, you should know that a special Force Band wearable and a battle-worn BB-8 version are ready to launch.

DON T MISS: Working iPhone 7 Plus captured on video for the first time

First unveiled at CES 2016 in early January, the Force Band is a wearable device that will let you control the BB-8 robot using the Force.

In 1996, Lucasfilm ventured on a bold step for the then-fledgling world of the Star Wars Expanded Universe: Shadows of the Empire, a transmedia crossover event that covered games, comics, books, merchandise... basically everything but a movie.

But what if they’d gone all the way?

Artist Brandon Bird tried to imagine it, and then also added Nic Cage.

Bird, whose incredible pop culture art we’ve featured many, many times before, whipped up a Drew-Struzan-esque poster that imagines what a 1996 Shadows of the Empire movie could’ve looked like.

Alongside the heroes we all know and love like Luke, Leia, Lando and Chewie — who is seen wearing an eye patch because a) at the time he was in disguise as a bounty hunter named Snoova and because b) it was the ‘90 — there are some familiar faces in Shadows’ new characters.

Edward Norton as Black Sun mob leader Prince Xizor?

Rogue One might be the first standalone film in the Star Wars universe, but that doesn t mean it s detached from the original saga.

In fact, director Gareth Edwards went to great lengths to ensure continuity between Rogue One and A New Hope, including adding previously unseen Star Wars footage to push one scene even further into the canon.

While some of the CGI effects were a bit odd-looking I m looking at you, Tarkin , one of the most impressive feats was how Rogue One digitally resurrected Garven Dreis and Jon Vander, the Red and Gold Leaders from A New Hope.

The characters were added into Rogue One s Battle of Scarif pretty seamlessly, leading many to wonder just how the hell Edwards was able to do it.

Edwards told RadioTimes that he came across some never-before-used footage while hanging out at Skywalker Ranch doing some research for the upcoming film.

As we re walking around, and doing all the cool things and looking at the Millennium Falcon and trying on Han Solo s jacket and things like that, in the back at the bottom was all these cans of film, Edwards said.

As Disney and Lucasfilm’s reset-version of Star Wars continuity has expanded over the years, slowly but surely elements of the old Expanded Universe have made their way back into canon.

Lucasfilm acknowledged there’s more on the way in the future... so, where do you want them to get started?

Honestly, I got my biggest wish granted when Grand Admiral Thrawn arrived in Star Wars Rebels—an announcement I am forever grateful to have witnessed live at Star Wars Celebration Europe back in 2016.

So with that done, I’m sort of the belief that as long as it’s not the Yuuzhan Vong, I’m fine with pretty much anything coming back whenever Lucasfilm wants them to.

Except maybe I’d like Darth Revan—villain and (spoilers for a 15-year-old video game, I guess) actual reformed protagonist of the Knights of the Old Republic series—back, if only to retroactively drag the Old Republic era, thousands of years before the films, back into relevance with him.

I’m fascinated by that period of Star Wars history thanks to falling in love with KotoR and its sequel as a teenager, and it has such potential for exploration in the new canon.

StarWars.com has just confirmed a report from earlier this month.

Woody Harrelson is joining the Star Wars universe with a role in the 2018 Han Solo film.

The official release doesn t announce who the actor is playing, but since the initial report was right about him being cast, it seems likely he ll indeed be some kind of mentor to Han, played by Alden Ehrenreich.

Donald Glover is also in the film as Lando Calrissian, and Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke will play an as-yet-unnamed leading role.

We couldn t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody, the film s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, said in a release.

His ability to find both humour and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique.

In the stories of episodes IV to VII, normal people don t believe in the Force in spite of it being ubiquitous according to the Jedi.

It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together .

It is not crystal clear what is fully implied by this description but, to the Jedi, the Force contributes to every unfolding event, from the life and death of living species to the structure of the galaxies.

To the spectator, the Force of Star Wars is very mysterious and appears to be unfathomable.

Of course, the concept of force is colloquially used to mean pushing or pulling something, such as with our hands or with the help of machines.

This questioning was predominant in ancient Greek philosophy where a distinction would be made between natural forces governing the behaviour of Heavenly and Earthly phenomena — often drawing from Aristotle s theory of the five elements — and un-natural forces which would oppose these natural forces; like when one tries to lift a rock for example.

We talked to Wendig about writing the novels, integrating his original idea with the existing Star Wars universe, and the effect of The Force Awakens on it all.

What was the scope of the original Aftermath pitch?

Chuck Wendig: As in, how far did it go?

It was a pitch for one book, but had a smaller pitch nested in it that talked about the direction of the overall trilogy.

How much of this trilogy was written before The Force Awakens came out?

That s how you get silly cliffhanger TV shows and fake drama.
