Lucasfilm s immersive entertainment subdivision ILMxLAB has released Trials on Tatooine, a free-to-play virtual reality Star Wars experience and Jedi training simulator available via Steam for the HTC Vive headset.

Billing itself as the most immersive Star Wars virtual reality experience ever, Trials on Tatooine digitally recreates many famous elements from the Star Wars film franchise, and players will recognize some familiar faces throughout its original VR-exclusive scenario.

Taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi, Trials on Tatooine begins with a first-person introductory text crawl that links the experience to its film predecessors.

Players soon find themselves on Luke Skywalker s home planet of Tatooine accompanied by the droid R2-D2 before the scene is invaded by stormtroopers wielding laser rifles.

With the Empire s TIE Fighters screaming overhead, players must repair a damaged Millennium Falcon while blocking enemy fire with a realistically modeled lightsaber.

Despite the extreme level of graphical detail throughout, the entire vignette can be completed in less than five minutes.

Sometimes science is stranger than fiction.

In 2011, astronomers gazing out into the night sky identified a planet with twin suns, just like world Luke Skywalker grew up in.

The resemblance was so striking that George Lucas himself endorsed the astronomers nickname for the newly discovered planet – Tatooine.

Officially named Kepler-16b after the telescope which spotted it, the planet is only about 200 light years away from Earth.

A visitor to Tatooine, located in the Cygnus constellation in the Milky Way, would have two shadows and spot two rainbows in a storm.

And Tatooine s every sunset is unique, such is the varying position of the suns as they plunge beneath the horizon.

Have you ever wanted to become a Jedi and fight off Stormtroopers using your lightsaber?

Well now you can, as ILMxLAB's Trials on Tatooine virtual reality experience has launched on SteamVR for owners of the HTC Vive.

The game places you on the desert planet of Tatooine as a Padawan, a Jedi in training, helping out R2-D2 defend the Millennium Falcon from incoming Stormtroopers.

The entire experience is pretty short from all reports, but it features iconic imagery and sounds from the Star Wars universe that's sure to impress fans.

The system requirements for Trials on Tatooine are pretty simple: you'll need a system that meets the minimum requirements for the HTC Vive – an Intel Core i5 and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 – to enjoy the game on its lowest settings.

For better graphics on the game's highest settings, ILMxLAB recommends a GTX Titan X alongside an Intel Core i7 CPU.

Star Wars fans with an HTC Vive will be able to put Yoda's famous "Do or do not, there is no try" adage into practice on Monday when HTC makes "Trials on Tatooine," the second licensed Star Wars game in virtual reality, available for free for all Vive owners.

HTC made the announcement this afternoon at Star Wars Celebration Europe, which is taking place in London this weekend.

We've written about our hands on time with the demo extensively in the past.

But in case you missed it, Trials on Tatooine casts you as a hero in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, tasking you to repair the Falcon and fend off a wave of Stormtroopers using Luke's lightsaber.

The demo, developed by ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm's laboratory for immersive entertainment, was one of the best demos shown off at this year's Game Developers Conference, and one of the first major partner projects shown off by Valve and HTC.

If you're like Anakin and can't wait to take on the role of a Jedi Master, residents of London can check out Trials of Tatooine at the Star Wars Celebration alongside other events, workshops and exhibits focused around Star Wars.

You're only about a day away from being able to experience the world of Star Wars in virtual reality.

At the Star Wars Celebration, currently being in London this weekend, Lucasfilm announced that it was releasing the VR game experiment Trials on Tatooine on Steam on Monday, July 18th.

The best part is that it's completely free, assuming you have a HTC Vive headset.

Now, keep in mind, Trials on Tatooine isn't a full-fledged game.

It really is an "experiment," offering users a cinematic VR experience set in the Star Wars universe.

Developed by Industrial Light & Magic's xLab, players get their hands on a lightsaber and are tasked with fighting off a group of Stormtroopers while defending R2-D2.

The future of Star Wars is very busy right now.

Rumours have been swirling for months that Disney and Lucasfilm stopped production on some or all of the Star Wars Story spinoff films as they focus on the new franchises from Rian Johnson and the guys behind Game of Thrones.

Lucasfilm insiders have denied this, but a Star Wars production designer confirmed that he was working on a project that’s been put on hold.

A spinoff that included Luke Skywalker’s home planet Tatooine.

Neil Lamont, who worked on films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, told CinemaBlend that production has stopped on another Star Wars spinoff film he was working on, one that included the planet of Tatooine, as well as some new galaxies.

He didn’t say much more than that, however:

Double rainbows and double sunsets are among the spectacular features that would welcome a visitor to a planet with two suns.

Now NASA has offered another reason to investigate the so-called Tatooine worlds, which are named after Anakin Skywalker’s home in Star Wars.

In the right circumstances, they might be habitable.

While the Tatooine planets we already know about are large and gaseous, a hypothetical Earth-sized planet in a twin-star system could support water and the temperatures required for life to develop, the researchers found.

“This means that double-star systems of the type studied here are excellent candidates to host habitable planets, despite the large variations in the amount of starlight hypothetical planets in such a system would receive,” said Max Popp, a researcher at Princeton University.

The research team simulated the conditions for a hypothetical, Earth-sized, water-covered planet in the Kepler-35 system.

A team of astronomers from NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center and San Diego State University has announced the exciting discovery of a planet with two suns within the Cygnus Constellation, using the Kepler Space Telescope.

Named Kepler-1647 b, the planet is located 3,700 light years from Earth, and thought to be similar in age to our planet, around 4.4 billion years old.

Related: On July 4, the Juno spacecraft will finally reach Jupiter

The team wrote on the SDSU website that it takes the planet about 1,107 days, or a little over three years, to orbit its host stars.

The transits are not regularly spaced in time and they can vary in duration and even depth, he said.

According to the team, Laurance Doyle, a coauthor on the paper and astronomer at the SETI Institute, noticed a transit back in 2011.

Related: NASA just gave $100K to a company that wants to steer asteroids toward Earth

Additional support from amateur astronomers in the KELT Follow-Up Network aided the team in assessing the planet s mass.

Luke Skywalker’s home planet isn’t the only place in need of moisture farms to harvest water.

Here on Earth, with our deserts and droughts, we’ve got tons of folks in need of fresh, drinkable H20.

There’s no doubt that many Earthlings are facing a severe water shortage—maybe four billion of us, according to one study.

That’s led an international team of scientists to join the hunt to try and pull out some of those valuable water molecules from the atmosphere.

“I think that’s very powerful.”

There’s nothing new about moisture harvesting—obviously the idea was around back in the 1970s (a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away).
