But there are still a lot of devices out there without USB-C ports.

As I already mentioned, most of the devices are coming now with USB-C ports, so it is quite challenging to connect them with the non-USB-C devices.

However, you can use USB-C adapters to restore those lost ports; they will give your device more versatility and help you make them connect in an easier way.

Microsoft may have developed hurt feelings over criticisms of its late adoption of USB-C connectors.

It has just recently revealed its promised USB-C dongle for its Surface devices and it might have made you cringe or scratch your head.

Now it is revealing USB-C adapters for its Surface Go, which thankfully does use USB-C.

They still leave you wondering, however, if the company is trolling USB-C advocates in one way or another.

The aforementioned Surface USB-C dongle is a giant among its peers, as big as the Surface’s power brick while really only giving access to one USB-C port.

Plus, it’s also a tad expensive for its function, making the accessory almost laughable.

Apple has dropped the price of its USB-C to Lightning cable by $6 to $19; it previously sold for $25.

The price cut comes amid rumors that this year’s iPhones could include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box and finally move on from the old USB-A cable.

Currently, the USB-A to Lightning cable also costs $19.

There’s also a rumor that Apple could introduce a new 18W USB-C Power Adapter that could fit into smaller areas compared to the current 29W adapter, as 9to5Mac reports.

Apple previously dropped the price of its USB-C to Lightning cable and other USB-C dongles in response to negative feedback about the MacBook’s move to USB-C ports.

If the company’s best laptops are exclusively using USB-C, it makes sense for the iPhone to follow that trend — on one side of the cable, at least.

Microsoft’s Surface USB-C dongle will be available to business customers later this week.

A Microsoft spokesperson tells The Verge that it’s pricing the dongle at $79.99 for commercial users, and it will be available through typical business purchasing channels on June 29th.

The dongle will plug into the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices, and provide USB-C support for accessories.

Microsoft’s existing range of Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices do not currently support USB-C, and only the Surface Book 2 has the relevant connector.

Microsoft’s USB-C dongle will slot into the Surface Connector charging port on existing devices, allowing Surface users to connect USB-C peripherals or charge from a USB-C charger.

HDMI, VGA, USB-A, and USB-C ports are all included. | Image: Satechi

Satechi has released a new USB-C hub for your laptop to add all the ports that it arguably should have included in the first place. Although the port selection on the $99.99 USB-C On-the-Go Multiport Adapter is similar to other hubs, the high spec of each port makes Satechi’s device worthy of attention. As well as laptops, it also works with USB-C tablets like recent iPad Pro models.

The hub’s got HDMI, which offers a maximum resolution of 4K and refresh rate of 60Hz, and there’s USB-C PD pass-through charging at up to 100W (though you have to provide your own power brick). The cable for attaching it to your device isn’t fixed like it is on some hubs, and Satechi supplies two USB-C to USB-C cables with the hub. One’s 1-m long, and...

USB-C hubs are (sadly) pretty common these days, and now Sony is getting in the game with the MRW-S3, a nice-looking hub that checks a whole bunch of high-end spec boxes like 100W USB-C PD charging and a UHS-II SD card reader that most don’t.

For any hub, the most important spec is what ports it offers, and Sony has plenty: there’s an HDMI port for video (with support for 4K video at 30 fps), a USB-C PD port for plugging in power (at up to the aforementioned 100W speed), a USB-C and USB-A port for external devices and accessories, both rated for the USB 3.1 Gen 2.

Sony also says that specification makes its hub the fastest on the market, with transfer speeds of up to 1000 MB/s, at least for the USB-C port.

And rounding things out are an SD card and microSD card slot, both rated for UHS-II cards.

Lastly, there’s a final USB-C port for connecting the hub to a computer with an included USB-C to USB-C cable, which is a nice touch — most hubs only offer an integrated cable or connector, while the separate cable leaves room for users to replace it with a new cable if that part gets damaged, or a longer cable, should they need more flexibility.

There are a few quibbles: there’s only one USB-A port, for example, which tends to be one of the main reasons for buying a hub like this, but the addition of a second USB-C port for data (alongside the usual one for power) gives me hope that USB-C may finally be gaining enough ground that a second USB-A port isn’t needed.

Apple’s 2019 iPhone models will be equipped with a Lightning connector rather than a USB-C port, according to a report from Macotakara (via 9to5Mac).

Previous reports had claimed that Apple was testing “some versions” of this year’s phone with a USB-C connector.

Last year, Macotakara, which has connections to both the Asian supply chain and Asian accessory manufacturers, successfully predicted that the 2018 iPad Pro would drop Lightning in favor of USB-C.

Macotakara’s report also claims that this year’s phones will once again include Apple’s standard 5W USB-A charger in the box with each phone.

If true, it means that once again you’ll need to buy a separate USB-C to Lightning cable and a power brick that supports USB-C Power Delivery if you want to be able to fast-charge your $1,000 iPhone.

Apple’s decision to stick with Lightning over USB-C wouldn’t be surprising.

Apple’s iPhone could be in for a big change next year.

Rumor has it that Apple is considering switching its iPhone lineup from Lightning to USB-C for charging.

We’ve heard whispers about the future of Lightning before, of course, but Apple’s decision to go all-in on USB-C with its MacBooks further lends credibility to the claim that iPhone will follow suit.

According to Digitimes, “analog IC vendors” claim that Apple is planning to outfit its 2019 iPhone lineup with USB-C ports instead of its proprietary Lightning connector.

Those vendors claim that Apple’s move to USB-C will cause other companies to shift as well, much as the adoption of USB-C in Apple’s MacBook line has led to PCs from other manufacturers supporting the interface.

That’s a strange thing to say, because Apple would actually be late to the party if it ends up switching to USB-C in 2019.

Despite being touted as a new standard, finding the right USB-C accessory for the newer MacBooks is still hit-or-miss.

And Apple putting only one USB-C port on the refreshed 2015 and 2016 MacBook models has caused headaches for Mac users.

First of all, the final specs for USB-C weren t even finalized until after the 2015 MacBook came out, so any accessories that were released then may not meet the final standard.

We ll follow up with more testing soon.

This messy compatibility really dampers the idea that USB-C is the new gold standard for computer accessories.

Until accessory makers can get a handle on USB-C s final specs and create products that can get firmware upgrades, Apple s new MacBook Pro is better left with the standard suite of ports—including USB-C—that can handle more than just one type of compatibility.

CES saw the first third-party USB-C to Lightning cables break cover from companies like Griffin and Belkin, and now popular purveyor of ion-stimulating apparatus Anker has confirmed it’s getting in on the game.

The company claims (via 9to5Mac) that its Powerline cable will have “a bend lifespan of over 5 times higher than any other cable in the market,” while the Powerline+ will gain extra strength through an aluminum shell and braided nylon.

Anker is also releasing a USB-C to female Lightning cable that’s primarily designed as an audio adapter, letting you use Lightning headphones with USB-C devices like the new iPad Pro or recent Apple laptops.

Pricing information isn’t yet available for any of these products, but the USB-C to Lightning cables will go on sale in March and the audio adapter will follow the next month.

USB-C to Lightning cables can fast-charge recent iPhones when paired to a USB-C PD-compatible charger like Apple’s new 18W power adapter or Anker’s tiny Atom PD 1.

Apple first released its own USB-C to Lightning cable back in early 2016 to enable fast-charging on the iPad Pro.
