Scientists analysing data from a defunct satellite say we should all consider that our universe might be round, rather than flat.

The consequences, they explain in a new paper, could be crisis-inducing.

A new paper reiterates that data from the final Planck satellite release might be better explained by a round universe than a flat universe.

“The point isn’t really that the universe is closed,” or round, the study’s corresponding author Alessandro Melchiorri from Sapienza University of Rome told Gizmodo.

Instead, he explained that if Planck data seems to prefer a closed universe, then the potential consequences and how they might butt up against cosmologists’ most popular theory of the universe must be “seriously investigated,” lest the theory fall apart.

Parallel lines in an open universe will always move farther apart; parallel lines in a closed universe will eventually meet (and single lines will eventually meet up with themselves); and parallel lines in a flat universe will stay parallel forever.

Like a cross between the opening credits of Contact and the Simpson’s Universe couch gag, this video gives us an ever expanding look at how the smallest objects in existence compare in size to the largest.

Starting with the fabric of space-time, we zoom out to the singularity of a black hole, then we zoom out to quarks, protons, atoms, DNA, sperm, grains of sand, lions, tigers, bears, whales, jets, zeppelins, skyscrapers, mountains, moons, planets, stars, black holes, galaxies and so much in between.

We’re somewhere in there too, forgetting to put the toilet seat down and trying to decide what to eat for dinner.

Be warned, the narrator of this clip isn’t exactly Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The voiceover script is alright and has a few funny bits.

But as conversations on this subject tend to do, it veers into too-many-bong-hits territory.

Let me explain, before going all reality based on me.

I know, I know... universe technically means "everything".

The fact that we are in this "Goldilocks" universe, not too hot or too cold, suggests there may be an infinite number out there.

In fact, if the strength of gravity was changed just a very minute amount (I'm talking by trillionths of a fraction), our universe would be very different than it is now, without stars, or crushed back to a singularity before it could inflate for more than a few years.

This is called the Many Worlds Interpretation, or MWI, originally formulated by Hugh Everett in 1957.

We already knew DC Universe’s Titans was getting a second season.

And, if you watched the entire finale episode of season one, you already had a very good idea of at least one new character joining the ensemble.

Now, it’s confirmed, with a casting announcement for Superboy.

Newcomer Joshua Orpin, whose credits are mostly shorts and TV in his native Australia, will be coming aboard to play Conner Kent, who is described in DC’s official announcement as “the angsty teenager of steel searching for purpose and the truth about his past.

While looking for answers, he crashes into the world of the Titans where he finds an unlikely home and surrogate family as well as revelations that carry more complications than he ever bargained for.”

Connor Kent, the second Superboy following Superman’s use of the title in his youth, made his first appearance in DC Comics’ The Adventures of Superman 500 by Jerry Ordway, Tom Grummett, and Doug Hazlewood where he’s introduced as a metahuman clone of Superman engineered by Project Cadmus.

The film production company took the (mummy) wraps off its "Dark Universe" initiative on Monday, and its intent is clear: to "reboot" the company's old monster-movie franchises over the next few years with big-name actors, interconnecting plots, and a rising tide of evil—a tide, of course, that can only be stopped by good guys who don't always follow the rules.

Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll, Prodigium's mission is to track, study, and—when necessary—destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world.

Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society... and will go to any length to contain it.

That'll star Russell Crowe as the aforementioned Dr. Jekyll, Sofia Boutella as the titular mummy, and Tom Cruise as "soldier of fortune" Nick Morton.

Universal is now officially connecting the dots of previously announced projects starring Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem; those actors will portray The Invisible Man and Frankenstein's Monster, respectively.

Do we really need another freaking "extended universe?"

Back when I was an undergrad, I remember perusing a panel of academic cartoons posted on a bulletin board in the hallway outside one of my classes.

They covered the gamut of life for nerds in grad school–thesis defense, post-doc penury, etc.

And while I’ve forgotten most of them, one physics cartoon still stands out in my memory:

The picture of an empty desk, with an empty chair, and a pair of empty shoes and socks lying underneath.

The caption went like this: “Rodney X, experimenting with marsh gases and a couple of magnets, accidentally creates a mini black hole.

He takes half the department with him…”

You may have read today that the entire universe is a giant hologram.

Maybe your mind was blown while you hit your Big Bong and contemplated a 2D universe, or that researchers had somehow found substantial evidence you were living in an illusion.

Which is still awesome, but not insane.

Theoretical physicists try to understand the Big Bang and how the universe ended up the way it is today.

One theory scraps a spatial dimension to better describe the strange behaviour of the early universe.

Now, an international group of physicists found they could recreate actual physical data collected on our universe using this 2D holographic model.
