Valve’s automatic anti-cheat detection system has gone on a banning spree following the company’s most recent Summer Sale.

According to the Steam Database, a third party tool that keeps track of the number of account bans on Steam per day — among other things — an estimated 40,411 accounts were shut down on July 5, one day after the sale ended.

That’s a huge spike over the usual 3,000 to 4,000 VAC bans per day and more than twice the previous record of 15,227 bans in a single day back in October 2016.

VAC bans prohibit accounts from connecting to Valve's servers, which render their in-game purchased skins and items useless.

As Polygon explains, many cheaters take the opportunity of a Steam sale to stock up on cheap copies of games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Then they create multiple accounts in order to test which hacks are discovered by VAC, minimizing losses.

Artifact is the first new game to come out of Valve in years and fans are excited, if a little disappointed that it's not Half-Life 3.

Valve raised a few hopes before dashing them at this year’s International DotA 2 world championships, by announcing a new game.

While the less jaded in the audience hoped it would be something related to Half-Life, the eventual announcement wasn’t quite as groundbreaking.

Artifact is a brand-new title that will turn some of DotA 2’s most recognizable characters into a card game.

Collectible card games have been popular in the real world for decades but have become quite a powerhouse of a genre in the digital realm in recent years.

Thanks to the growth of Magic the Gathering’s various incarnations, Gwent, and, most notably, Hearthstone (with its new missions), the genre is more popular than ever, and now Valve is set to add its own take on it with Artifact, A DotA 2 card game.

The game has just gotten a big update that will add more replay value to some of the mini-games.

Valve knows this, and that's why they've released this competitive update for for the title.

I still go back to Space Pirate Trainer, because I'm constantly competing with friends to keep my top spot on the high score list.

Xortex has also recieved an "Infinite" mode, and they've replaced your laser with a super powerful bomb.

Finally, the Slingshot has been rebalanced to include "new core calibration career opportunites."

You'll find bigger explosions, and new score calculations, which offer plenty of reasons to go back and try it out again.

Valve is making it easier to chat with your friends while playing your favorite Steam games.

The chat platform lets you compile a friends list (with features like favorites and group chats) and shows what game everyone is playing.

This Steam Chat update looks a lot like Discord, another gaming-centric chat platform which has been called the "Slack for gamers."

Discord has risen among the ranks of gamers as the most common choice for game-related communications.

And it’s easy to see why: it works well and the competition is pretty dismal.

But Valve is looking to keep users in-house with an overhaul of the chat options on its game platform Steam .

It’s a welcome change, one of many that Steam’s users have surely been asking for — the platform, while convenient in many ways, is also incredibly outdated in others.

The friend and communications options may as well be ICQ, and let’s not get started on the browser.

Today’s news suggests that Valve has not failed to hear gamers’ cries.

Valve's classic shooter Half-Life has received a new patch 19 years after the game was first released in November 1998.

Now live on Steam, the patch addresses a few crash issues and bugs and is the first update for the game in four years.

Many Steam forum commentators praised Valve for still addressing issues in the original Half-Life.

"Wow, it is cool that Valve is still working on this game even after 19 years", one commentator wrote.

"Maybe just maybe we can get Half-Life 3."

Another wrote: "Thanks for continuing to keep them functioning properly and as bug-free as possible.

While cheating in PC games is extremely tough to eradicate entirely, Valve's record day may signal increased enforcement of suspicious behavior.

While many flocked to the Steam Summer Sale to snag a few new games at steep discounts, it would appear that some got a little more than they bargained for in the process.

According to the Steam Database — first reported by Dot Esports — more than 40,000 accounts felt the wrath of the Valve Anti-Cheat ban (VAC) on July 6, the day following the end of the annual summer sale.

That number — 40,411 to be exact — is a new record for VAC bans in a single day.

The new record far exceeded the previous record of 15,227 bans, which was handed out on a fall day in October 2016.

For context, a typical day of VAC bans normally includes anywhere from 2,500 to 4,000 users, so the Steam Database chart tends to remain on a relatively smooth, horizontal course.

On most Tuesday evenings in the United States, if you listen carefully, you can hear a crowd of people groaning loudly at their computers.

That’s because the popular PC gaming platform Steam typically goes offline for maintenance for a short period around this time.

And now is one of those times.

Steam and most of its features are offline as Valve bangs on its servers with hammers and crowbars and other blunt objects.

The downtime is primarily keeping people from accessing certain parts of the store, booting up Valve games (like Dota 2), and third-party games that rely on Steam services like Valve anti-cheat.

This outage is normal, and it rarely lasts for a significant amount of time.

Do you remember Valve's Steam Link?

It's a little box you plug into your TV, letting you stream your PC games to the big screen in 1080p 60FPS with zero lag.

Or at least it will in an ideal situation.

Well if you don't have one you might want to take advantage of the fact Valve put it on sale.

The Steam Link is normally £40, but it's not currently on sale for £7.09 bundled with FantaBlade's ICEY - a 2D sidescroller.

According to the breakdown ICEY gets a 30 per cent discount (£9 down to £6.29) while the Steam Link has had a whopping 98 per cent discount.

If there's one thing we know about online user reviews, it's that they often bear little resemblance to the actual quality of the product in question.

Today's evidence: the user reviews section for Dota 2 on Steam, which in recent days has been flooded with people complaining not about Dota 2 directly but about Valve's refusal to work on Half-Life 3.

PCGamesN was among the first to notice the review bombing this weekend, and the timing of this coordinated online "protest" may seem odd, considering that over 11 years have passed since Half-Life 2: Episode 3 was first announced.

It seems likely that former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw's recent publication of a "fanfic" potential plotline for Half-Life 3 may have spurred some of the newfound backlash against Valve.

The announcement of a microtransaction-powered Dota 2 card game earlier this month also seems to be spurring at least some of the ire against the company's priorities.

A few choice quotes from the hundreds of recent negative reviews:
