Buying a full-price Sport Band for my Apple Watch ($49) is probably one of the dumbest financial decisions I’ve ever made.

This isn’t news—Apple opened up the Apple Watch band market to third parties shortly after shipping the watch, but the Made for Apple Watch program differs from the MFi program for AirPlay and Lightning accessories.

They can’t be wiggled or yanked loose from the Apple Watch without pressing the tiny release button on the bottom of the watch itself.

The silicone sport band I bought has plastic lugs instead of metal, but that doesn’t seem to affect performance either.

Obviously I can’t vouch for the quality of every cheap Apple Watch band on Amazon, but I do plan to test more.

If you have suggestions you’d like me to look at, just tweet links to me at @sfsooz.

The latest version of Apple's young programming language, Swift, will be one of the stars of the show at Apple's World Wide Developers conference WWDC which begins June 13.The programming world has never seen anything like Swift.

Apple launched the new programming language a mere two years ago.

Normally something like that would cause the developer community to throw tantrums. But Apple open-sourced Swift, meaning Apple opened the language up so that everyone can see it and submit their own changes and updates to it if they want.As a result, the development of Swift has been done publicly.

The new plan is to fix it by version 4.0.Some developers have criticized Apple for rushing on Swift like this and for using version numbers like 3.0, that imply Swift is in its third generation, and should be stable. But many others are taking that news in stride.

It s still a change that will break our code, but it should be the last one, and honestly, the changes really are about removing undesired features, and that s definitely progress!

That means that programmers can use Swift to write sophisticated business software that will run in a data center, not on an Apple device. The stampede to Swift is so overwhelming that Anglade has heard rumors that Google might try to adopt Swift, allowing it to be used to write Android apps. The NextWeb's Nate Swanner recently reported that Google, Facebook, and Uber held meetings to discuss the possibility.

p Windows 10 S is going to piss a lot of people off.

In fact, it has already started to piss some of them off, and they've been annoyed by it since the first leaks about the operating system came out.

Windows 10 S blocks the execution of any program that wasn't downloaded from the Windows Store.

Arbitrary downloaded apps, or even apps with physical install media, are forbidden, a move that on the one hand prevents running malware but on the other blocks the use of most Windows software.

Windows Store apps include both tightly sandboxed apps, built using the Universal Windows Platform, and lightly restricted Win32 apps that have been packaged for the Store using the Desktop App converter, formerly known as Project Centennial.

This positions Microsoft as a gatekeeper—although its criteria for entry within the store is for the most part not stringent, it does reserve the right to remove software that it deems undesirable—and means that the vast majority of extant Windows software can't be used.

Before there were Siri Shortcuts, there was Launch Center Pro — a clever iOS utility that for years has allowed iPhone users to automate more complex tasks by creating shortcuts.

For example, you could search Yelp for the nearest coffee shop, jump straight to the camera in Instagram or message a loved one, among other things — and all right from a widget in the Notification Center.

Instead of just widgets and buttons to tap, the app has rolled out support for NFC stickers.

And at long last, with the release of iOS 12 this fall, Apple opened up NFC capabilities to app developers.

This means iPhone owners with newer model devices can tap NFC tags to trigger actions — like app launches.

The stickers, which are sold online and in the app, add a physical link to digital tasks, explains Launch Center Pro developer David Barnard.

YouTube Music is getting a couple of new features that span various platforms today.

The first new feature is a proper desktop app for the music streaming service, which means that those on desktop no longer need to listen through a browser.

YouTube Music is also getting Siri support today, following Spotify’s lead pretty closely in that regard.

The desktop app that YouTube Music is getting today is more or less what you’d expect from such a client, as it allows for music playback without having to visit YouTube Music’s website.

Considering that all of Google’s big competitors in the streaming space have a desktop app of their own, one has to wonder why YouTube Music didn’t have something like that at launch, but regardless, it’s here now.

Of course, you can still continue visiting the YouTube Music website to stream music when you’re on desktop, and Google says that the desktop app is available in the form of an extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge as well.

It revealed the nifty things that can be created and experienced with nothing but a smartphone, the very same premise behind Google Tango and Daydream.

While these two technologies existed for quite a while, they existed in different worlds.

Those worlds are finally colliding in the ASUS ZenFone AR, which can finally be yours.

Daydream smartphones are already available, with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ the latest inductees into their ranks.

Commercial Tango devices, however, are harder to come by, with Lenovo’s mid-range PHAB2 Plus being the only retail device in the market.

Even rarer, of course, is a device that combines both.

With a tease of "We've got something special in store for you," Apple announced the grand opening of the company's newest retail location.

The Apple Store in Downtown Brooklyn will have its official grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The store will be at 123 Flatbush Avenue, which is right at the heart of Brooklyn.

Apple opened a store in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn last year, but this one is more centrally located near the shopping heart of the city.

It'll be in the Atlantic Terminal Mall across the street from the Barclays Center Arena.

Microsoft is planning to overhaul its 500-acre campus in Redmond, Seattle.

The software giant will start a multi-year project next fall to create 18 new buildings, alongside new public spaces, transportation investments, and sports fields.

Microsoft currently has 125 buildings at its campus, and once the project is complete this will rise to 131 buildings.

The updated campus will house 47,000 Microsoft employees that currently work at the company’s headquarters in Redmond, and allow for 8,000 more people.

Microsoft is investing billions of dollars to redevelop it campus, and the company will tear down 12 old buildings to create the bigger 18 replacements.

The development will take between five and seven years to complete, and includes a 2-acre open plaza that 2,000 people can fit inside.

Microsoft-owned mobile keyboard app SwiftKey is rolling out a new feature today that lets users personalize their keyboard using their own photos.

Starting today on Android and iOS in beta, SwiftKey users can upload any image to use as the backdrop for their keyboard.

The company is also revealing a new partnership with photographer Keith Ladzinski, who specializes in adventure photography and who has provided 12 of his own images for use within SwiftKey.

SwiftKey already allows users to tailor their keyboard with themes that include plain colors and snazzier incarnations, but this latest personalization feature lets them put anything from their cat to their toddler on their keyboard — the most commonly used app on most people’s smartphones.

“SwiftKey Keyboard has always been about giving users ways to make the technology even more uniquely theirs — whether that’s in the language they use, how they type, or what their personal keyboard looks like,” noted SwiftKey cofounder and CEO Jon Reynolds.

“Today’s launch of photo themes marks another way that users can make SwiftKey Keyboard even more their own.”

As promised, has Apple opened up its public beta program to the public.

The public launch is in principle identical with the versions that recently was sent out to registered developers, so expect that there is still a lot of bugs left to sort out.

What applies to the Mac OS, the High Sierra will be sent to the public beta out shortly, but when it comes to the Watch OS 4 it still requires that you are a registered developer to get access to the beta versions.

SwiftKey, the popular mobile keyboard app that was acquired by Microsoft earlier this year, has given its flagship app a major overhaul this week with a completely new predictive typing engine that promises increased accuracy. The London-based company gave its first public demonstration of the technology last year through a new standalone app called the SwiftKey Neural Alpha app, which was effectively an experimental version of its main app powered by a different language engine.

It made sense for the company to do it this way, as it was still fine-tuning the underlying technology, but now it s ready for prime time within the main consumer SwiftKey app.Founded in 2008, SwiftKey built a big following on Android as an alternative to the stock keyboard app on phones and tablets, though it later launched for iOS after Apple opened up to third-party keyboards.

To speed up typing, SwiftKey learns your writing style over time and predicts the next word before you ve started typing — this is partly based on historical patterns, but it also scans texts from other sources to learn popular sequences in which words are often placed.

But things are about to get a whole lot better.Artificial neural networks ANNs represent part of the broader field of machine learning and artificial intelligence A.I.

and are based on the structure and workings of the human brain.

Compared to the existing n-gram model, which leans toward computational linguistics and probability, ANNs should be better at predicting and correcting language by considering the context of what someone is trying to say.Previously, SwiftKey would suggest the next word in a sentence based on the order of words it has seen in the past — and it was pretty good at guessing what you re trying to say.
