Human activities and human-induced factors, such as climate change, are a major cause of land degradation and desertification around the world. Furthermore, desertification is generally associated with climate variations and biodiversity loss, exacerbating the environmental crisis the world is currently facing. People living in drylands are extremely vulnerable to climate change and desertification seeing that most of them depend on agriculture as a source of income, an activity highly susceptible to the changing climate. Some regions are already experiencing these impacts, with land productivity declining by 50% due to soil erosion and desertification. Together, desertification and land degradation result in a USD 42 billion in loss of earnings each year.

There are certain marine spaces in the world, which restrict human intervention and this is happening only because we all want to save these animals for life.

Some of the species are under threat due to some human activities and they need to be saved.

This is one of the reasons the world supports this idea and such marine parks have been opened in various parts of the world. Not every marine park is created in the same way, some might allow fishing and controlled human activities and some might not.

When they were well-planned, well-executed, marine parks help in feeding communities, protecting jobs, and boosting the biodiversity in the ocean.

Spillover effects – The benefits of marine parks will go beyond just protecting the boundaries.

They boost alternative livelihood – conserving biodiversity can be far more profitable than actually exploiting it.

In this article we are going to talk about some of the major advantages of perks of becoming a certified PADI diver.

If you are looking for scuba diving in Sri Lanka, or in case you are looking for diving courses in Sri Lanka, consider Diving Guru.

You get to experience a whole different world:Geographically speaking, the oceans make for about 70% of the entire planet and the rest is land.

As you can imagine, naturally the world inside the oceans has to offer a greater range of biodiversity and natural escapes than land (not that it is any less for humans to explore it all in one life).

This is one of the profoundest reasons for them to come to embrace the oceans for the sight of the beautiful world inside, every year.Dive as much as you want and explore the unexplored:This is one of the exquisite beauties of getting to dive.

Diving is a remarkable experience.

Texas Tech University’s Texas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, along with U.S Geological Survey and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are working hand in hand to assess and keep data on the biodiversity of Texas.

The Texas Bird Photo Tour is part of the National GAP Analysis Program established by the government.

This information is used to show distribution of animals and how the population growth of humans and animals affects the animals’ vegetation of Texas.

It also gives data for professors and scientists to predict future problems and solutions.

"We need to maintain some quality of life," said Nick Parker, unit leader and professor of the Texas Gap.

That is where the GAP Analysis project can help.

We could go on like this all day on Peru Bird Photo Tour. The top 10 countries in the world by proportion of protected area have between 40 and 54% of their total land protected by law. However, considering that in 1990, Peru had much less than half of the total protected area it has today, there has been some improvement. At the end of his government, he left 8 new natural areas that covered nearly 4.5 million hectares. Valentin Paniagua, who served as interim president after Alberto Fujimori fled the country, created 5 protected areas of nearly 2.5 million hectares in his less than 1 year in office. This was a significant step forward after Alberto Fujimori only created 1 national protected area in his entire 10 years in office.

(University of Helsinki) The Finnish solution to include all types of biodiversity data and the whole data life cycle, from collection to use, in the same data infrastructure is unique. It is also rare for one infrastructure to be able to serve cutting-edge research, public administration, business and the civil society simultaneously. This solution, the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility "FinBIF" is described as a best-practice model in biodiversity informatics in a recent paper in the Nature Portfolio journal Scientific Data.

Increasing consumption of palm oil in different industries is boosting the growth of the market.

Moreover, low price of palm oil as compared to other vegetable oils is also supporting the growth of the market.Changing consumption pattern among the consumers and inclination towards a healthy diet is influencing the food industry to substitute trans-fats with the palm oil.

Moreover, growing consumption of palm oil in cosmetics and personal care products is bringing a surge to the palm oil market.

However, a large proportion of palm oil expansion occurs at the expense of biodiversity and ecosystems in the countries it is produced which may hamper the growth of the market.

Machine learning algorithms abound in biodiversity research, but sometimes without the proper attribution or oversight.

In an effort to raise the academic bar, Google says it’ll release an AI workflow for institutions, developed in collaboration with Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), iNaturalist, and Visipedia.

Researchers at the tech giant say the workflow will support data aggregation and collaboration across teams while ensuring corpora follow standardized licensing terms, use compatible file formats, and provide fair and sufficient data coverage for the task at hand.

“The promise of machine learning for species identification is coming to fruition, revealing its transformative potential in biodiversity research,” wrote visiting faculty Serge Belongie and Google Research engineering director Hartwig Adam in a blog post published to coincide with the Biodiversity Next conference in Leiden, Netherlands.

“International workshops … feature competitions to develop top performing classification algorithms for everything from wildlife camera trap images to pressed flower specimens on herbarium sheets.

The encouraging results that have emerged from these competitions inspired us to expand the availability of biodiversity datasets and ML models from workshop-scale to global-scale.”

It has a long cartilaginous snout and venomous saliva, which it uses to catch and kill insects and worms.

The few people who have handled one say that it smells like a goat, and when it is startled it runs on its toes, usually in awkward zigzags that do little to help it avoid capture.

Like its cousin the Hispaniolan solenodon, whose snout sits on a ball-and-socket joint, it is an evolutionary curiosity.

But the solenodons’ lonely lineage diverged from the rest of the mammals’ back in the Cretaceous period, when the dinosaurs still had more than ten million years left on Earth.

In a paper published in this week’s issue of Nature, that the protection of outlier species like the solenodon could have disproportionate—and, to a large extent, untapped—benefits for global biodiversity.

But just as diversity within a human population can be measured by more than skin color, diversity within animal and plant communities can be measured in a number of ways.

Nature is in decline in every region of the world, putting human livelihoods in danger, a series of United Nations reports on biodiversity have warned.

Biodiversity, the variety of plants and animals found on Earth, and natural services such as clean water and healthy soils are being hit by exploitation, pollution, invasive species and the growing threat of climate change.

The declining trend in nature endangers economies, livelihoods, food security and the quality of life for people worldwide, according to the reports which were written by more than 550 leading experts from more than 100 countries.

The four regional assessments paint a bleak picture of biodiversity and nature in the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and Europe and Central Asia – although they also pointed to some successes in reversing declines in wildlife.

Sir Robert Watson, the leading British scientist who chairs the intergovernmental body behind the reports, said: “Biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people sound, to many people, academic and far removed from our daily lives.

“Nothing could be further from the truth – they are the bedrock of our food, clean water and energy.

The Galapagos Marine Reserve is unbelievably vast, and is home to a unique biodiversity.

Beneath its warm azure waters, you can find countless rare and exotic species of whale, shark, sea turtles, tropical fishes, and more.

To protect this natural heritage, the government of Ecuador has imposed restrictions on certain commercial fishing activities within the 133,000 square kilometer zone.

Last year, a fishing vessel sailing under the flag of Panama switched off its tracking system as it entered the reserve, only to reactivate it fifteen days later, once it reached on the other side.

The vessel was spotted by Oceana, a Washington DC-based nonprofit that campaigns tirelessly against harmful human behavior at sea.

Oceana’s team of data scientists pored over millions of records to identify vessels that were deliberately hiding their location while in protected marine zones.
