It has come to light that Apple is running a secret manufacturing facility close to its Cupertino headquarters dedicated to developing and testing its own displays.

Bloomberg News reports that the facility is working on MicroLED screens, which will allow devices to be thinner than those with other screen technologies, and will be brighter and more power-efficient than its current OLED displays.

“People familiar with the situation” claim that the project was almost abandoned a year ago but is now making significant progress, although it will still be a number of years before consumers see the results themselves.

While the facility is allegedly not large enough for full-scale production, it’s well-enough equipped to handle the entirety of the development process and, as a result, potentially secure MicroLED displays as the company’s own patented tech.

Currently, Apple is supplied by a variety of manufacturers – rivals Samsung and LG amongst them – to design and manufacture the displays for their flagship products, including the likes of the iPhone X and the Apple Watch.

Moving the production and design of another key component in-house has the potential to significantly disrupt competing suppliers of the technology while simultaneously creating an exclusive product to sell – MicroLED displays.

GameStop stock (GME) soared in value on Wednesday, peaking at $348.50 per share. Then, in an event that’s definitely not cause for concern, minutes later it lost fully half its value by plummeting to $172, Bloomberg reports. Yes, “stonks” are back, and GameStop is once again in the crosshairs of online amateur investors.

Wednesday’s drama ultimately ended with the price settling back down to $265 per share, but it’s hard to not feel déjà vu. It seems like it was only yesterday when everyone was watching in a mixture of shock, amusement, and general concern as GME crested $483 per share. The rise and fall doesn’t quite compare, but the losses for anyone who sold during Wednesday’s dip in price are likely huge.

Nintendo is said to be increasing its Switch production again, with a new Bloomberg report saying the company is asking its partners to manufacture as many as 30 million consoles this fiscal year. While Nintendo’s official forecast remains a conservative 19 million shipments, Bloomberg has reported hikes in production targets to 22 million, 25 million, and now 30 million throughout the year.

The Switch is still difficult to find in some markets, including Nintendo’s home country of Japan, as the coronavirus pandemic has sparked a huge increase in demand. With people staying at home, some of Nintendo’s titles like workout RPG Ring Fit Adventure and escapist island fantasy Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been constantly selling in big...

The U.S. Air Force has given SpaceX a qualified vote of confidence in the wake of the presumed loss of the mysterious Zuma satellite, according to Bloomberg News.

The news bolsters SpaceX's claim that its Falcon 9 rocket performed just fineduring the Jan. 7 launch of Zuma, which apparently never reached orbit, according to unconfirmed reports.

"Based on the data available, our team did not identify any information that would change SpaceX's Falcon 9 certification status," Lt. Gen. John Thompson, commander of the Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center, told Bloomberg News in a statement.

This assessment came after "a preliminary review of telemetry that was available to us from” the Zuma liftoff, Thompson told Bloomberg News, stressing that "the Air Force will continue to evaluate data from all launches."

The Zuma payload was built by aerospace company Northrop Grumman, which also provided the adapter that connected Zuma to the Falcon 9's second stage.

In case you thought the Echo in your living room laughing maniacally out of nowhere wasn’t creepy enough, just imagine what it would be like if it followed you around.

A Bloomberg report suggests that Amazon is working on an actual home robot that will wander around your abode, navigating obstacles and ostensibly following your orders.

It was also responsible for the Fire Phone, but let’s not go there.

The division has published a bunch of robotics-related job openings online, Bloomberg found, along with positions like “Computer Vision and Deep Learning Research Scientist,” though that listing seems to have been pulled offline.

Still, this sort of hire would make perfect sense if you’re constructing a robot designed to navigate an ever-changing environment like a home.

Amazon’s already got a finger in robotics with Amazon Robotics, responsible for the autonomous machines that move packages around Amazon warehouses, though the two projects reportedly aren’t associated with each other.
