PALM SPRINGS, Calif.—Within 8 minutes of ordering Neosporin and Band-Aids, a consumer in Virginia had those items in hand, delivered by drone from a nearby Walgreens to his home.

It was no stunt—drone delivery is part of a pilot project the drug store chain launched this fall aimed at “redefining convenience,” said Vineet Mehra, global CMO of the retailer’s parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance.

The brand, with $10 billion in annual sales, is the first retailer to use the FAA-cleared technology from Google parent company Alphabet’s Wing division.

An example, along with delivering products by drone, is a Walgreens program that puts water refill stations beside bottled water that’s for sale in stores.

“We have to give our customers choice.”

Drones might one day blanket cities dropping off Amazon goods, but in the short-term, there s plenty of opportunity for them to help out in limited engagements, where delivery via other means would be difficult, impossible or just not quite expedient enough.

UPS kicked off trials of deliveries of that kind this week, with a pilot flight to drop a small package containing a mock asthma inhaler to a summer camp located on an island in the Atlantic.

The 25-mile journey took about 8 minutes, using a drone branded with UPS badging and colors, and supplied by CyPhy Works, a Massachusetts-based drone company that supplies both the hardware and software for drone operations.

UPS is also an investor in CyPhy, participating in a $22 million round the company raised last October.

Technically, the pilot voyage of this drone doesn t represent anything very challenging – even though the PARC Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications unit supplied by CyPhy flew itself, autonomous short-duration runs are pretty standard fare as far as drone operation goes.

The real advancement here is that even this test flight wasn t really possible as executed prior to the issuance of new rules by the FAA around commercial drone use.

Shanghai has formed a RMB 500 million ($70 million) fund to boost its drone industry and lure drone makers to the city with subsidies and preferential policies.

Determined to improve public safety, SkyFire Consulting works with police and fire departments to implement the use of drones in varying aspects of their efforts.

SkyFire’s work is mainly done behind the scenes as it aids Federal Aviation Administration training and certification for public safety departments.

“We help [public safety organizations] identify their use cases, their missions, and identify what equipment will help them best,” SkyFire CEO Ben Kroll told Digital Trends at the Drone Rodeo at the 2018 CES expo.

“We will assist with the FAA certification process and whatever route they want to go that way.

We also do [public safety] training, we have several customizable training programs that we offer departments.”

Besides for training and certification, SkyFire also focuses on pairing the proper drones for the appropriate public safety department.

Drone safety is being highlighted in a new photography competition which asks amateur pilots to submit images captured with drones while staying below the 400 feet 122m flying limit for the crafts.

The Civil Aviation Authority CAA and tourism board VisitEngland has launched the 400ft Britain challenge as a way to celebrate the beauty of the countryside while educating drone owners on how to safely use the technology.

Drones have become increasingly popular among amateur users.

However, safety concerns have been raised following more than 40 reported near-misses involving aircraft in 2016, despite use of the remote control crafts in close proximity to airports being banned.

In September, the British Airline Pilots Association Balpa said it was only a matter of time before a major accident is caused by a drone collision.

Now the CAA wants to encourage safer use with the launch of the competition, where members of the public will be able to submit entries – captured by a drone flying no higher than 400 feet above ground – via social media using the hashtag 400ftBritain.

Amazon takes drone delivery to the next level with beehive-like tower for drone delivery across various locations and deployments.

Amazon has unveiled plans for what it calls, a drone fulfillment centre, structured in the form of a beehive.

The plans from the retail giant appeared in a patent filing which reveals its plan to enable drones to be spread to different locations around the world.

The move follows from the company’s previous Prime Air service that was designed to send out drone deliveries in under 30 minutes.

If that wasn’t the answer, Amazon will be hoping that this is.

In the patent application, the company explained that the multi-level fulfillment centre is designed to handle the landing and take-off of the drones (unmanned aerial vehicles).

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.—Within 8 minutes of ordering Neosporin and Band-Aids, a consumer in Virginia had those items in hand, delivered by drone from a nearby Walgreens to his home.

It was no stunt—drone delivery is part of a pilot project the drug store chain launched this fall aimed at “redefining convenience,” said Vineet Mehra, global CMO of the retailer’s parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance.

The brand, with $10 billion in annual sales, is the first retailer to use the FAA-cleared technology from Google parent company Alphabet’s Wing division.

An example, along with delivering products by drone, is a Walgreens program that puts water refill stations beside bottled water that’s for sale in stores.

“We have to give our customers choice.”

Drones might one day blanket cities dropping off Amazon goods, but in the short-term, there s plenty of opportunity for them to help out in limited engagements, where delivery via other means would be difficult, impossible or just not quite expedient enough.

UPS kicked off trials of deliveries of that kind this week, with a pilot flight to drop a small package containing a mock asthma inhaler to a summer camp located on an island in the Atlantic.

The 25-mile journey took about 8 minutes, using a drone branded with UPS badging and colors, and supplied by CyPhy Works, a Massachusetts-based drone company that supplies both the hardware and software for drone operations.

UPS is also an investor in CyPhy, participating in a $22 million round the company raised last October.

Technically, the pilot voyage of this drone doesn t represent anything very challenging – even though the PARC Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications unit supplied by CyPhy flew itself, autonomous short-duration runs are pretty standard fare as far as drone operation goes.

The real advancement here is that even this test flight wasn t really possible as executed prior to the issuance of new rules by the FAA around commercial drone use.

Determined to improve public safety, SkyFire Consulting works with police and fire departments to implement the use of drones in varying aspects of their efforts.

SkyFire’s work is mainly done behind the scenes as it aids Federal Aviation Administration training and certification for public safety departments.

“We help [public safety organizations] identify their use cases, their missions, and identify what equipment will help them best,” SkyFire CEO Ben Kroll told Digital Trends at the Drone Rodeo at the 2018 CES expo.

“We will assist with the FAA certification process and whatever route they want to go that way.

We also do [public safety] training, we have several customizable training programs that we offer departments.”

Besides for training and certification, SkyFire also focuses on pairing the proper drones for the appropriate public safety department.

Amazon takes drone delivery to the next level with beehive-like tower for drone delivery across various locations and deployments.

Amazon has unveiled plans for what it calls, a drone fulfillment centre, structured in the form of a beehive.

The plans from the retail giant appeared in a patent filing which reveals its plan to enable drones to be spread to different locations around the world.

The move follows from the company’s previous Prime Air service that was designed to send out drone deliveries in under 30 minutes.

If that wasn’t the answer, Amazon will be hoping that this is.

In the patent application, the company explained that the multi-level fulfillment centre is designed to handle the landing and take-off of the drones (unmanned aerial vehicles).
