We're bringing print and digital under the same roof

In the 37 years since Adweek first honored standout magazines in its annual Hot List, the publishing industry has undergone a massive transformation (to put it mildly), which we’ve been helping our readers navigate in our pages and online.

As such, we felt that the Hot List itself was due for a refresher to keep apace of the increasingly digital, mobile and social world of content creation.

On Oct. 30, we’ll unveil our brand new Publishing Hot List, which, for the first time, will honor the best in both print and digital publishing.

We’ll continue to hand out a number of magazine-only awards—focusing solely on publishers’ print performances—while adding new digital awards, in which both digital natives and the digital arms of magazine and newspaper brands will compete.

The Hot List will also look more closely at publishers’ performances on specific social platforms (namely Instagram and Snapchat) as well as their prowess in creating branded content.

How Jordan Klepper Finds the Funny in Alex Jones and the Alt-Right Media

The Opposition will satirize outlets like Brietbart and Infowars

Thirteen months after cancelling The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Comedy Central has finally found its 11:30 p.m. companion to The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

Tonight, the network is launching The Opposition with Jordan Klepper, which will satirize hyperbolic alt-media outlets like Brietbart and Infowars.

Klepper, the former Daily Show correspondent, will follow in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert by hosting the 11:30 show as a fictionalized version of himself, a character he described over the summer as “a know-nothing provocateur who fights for the common man … Alex Jones meets Garrison Keillor.”

As he prepared to launch the show—which will finally solidify Comedy Central’s late-night lineup—Klepper spoke with Adweek about how The Colbert Report inspired him, why The Opposition could be a great fit for brands and how much late night has changed in the past year.

As media companies and the content they produce continue to move away from singular platforms to a smorgasbord of omnichannel offerings, Adweek’s coveted Hot List has evolved from a magazine awards franchise to publishing, digital and TV/video honors as well.

There is no better example of mastering the omnichannel experience than Adweek’s Media Visionary Ellen DeGeneres, who rose from her early days as a stand-up comic to entertainer, TV host, producer, activist and cultural icon.

The secret to her success may lie in her oft-said credo “Be kind to others,” and in speaking to DeGeneres it’s clear she lives and breathes this every day.

With DeGeneres’ popularity exploding, she smartly extended her growing media empire online, rolling up all her digital assets into the Ellen Digital Network.

You can read more on EDN from staff writer Sara Jerde.

We have too many Hot List awards to list here (perhaps you’ve heard of Fortnite HQ and Netflix’s Queer Eye?).

After the somewhat wacky and wonderful news about the Polish bilmekanikern that 2016 still balances drive shafts on a Commodore 64, we just had to.

Yep – we grottar us down in spelnostalgi again, and this time we set, for natural reasons, the C64:an in focus.

Before we throw ourselves over our hot list, we want to deliver a statement.

This classic actually made his debut on the odd computers BBC Micro and Acorn Electron, before it eventually found its way on to other computers.

The Last Ninja was, dare we say, groundbreaking.

The Last Ninja was the graphics well, it really felt like to be catapulted back to the feudal Japan , the music aaah, and the atmospheric story...

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are using facial recognition software to trawl through millions of driver’s license photos provided by 21 states to search and find suspects.

News broke over the weekend that the FBI and immigration officials access images — often without obtaining a search warrant or court order — in order to identify criminal suspects but also witnesses, victims and innocent bystanders.

In some cases agents would simply email the state department of motor vehicles for assistance.

But Congress nor state lawmakers ever authorized the access or the searches.

A bipartisan group of congresspeople have criticized the use of facial recognition as dangerous to citizens’ right to privacy.

Several states, like New York, and the District of Columbia, allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, with other states — like Florida and Texas — working to introduce similar laws.

p While the way we watch TV evolves, what we want to watch remains consistent: the hottest TV shows still have heart, soul and wit.

HBO viewers were treated to big-screen performances from Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård.

Nickelodeon has already ordered a fourth season, and is doubling down on its success by ordering an animated spinoff, The Adventures of Kid Danger and Captain Man, which should lift the network’s ratings even higher.

While ratings for its rivals have fallen, Nickelodeon just keeps dominating.

1 in all three kids’ demos (2-11, 2-5 and 6-11), and has been the most-watched kids network for three years, while airing all of the top 10 shows last year among kids 2-11, including hits like The Thundermans and Game Shakers.

The most startlingly relevant show on television, the Elisabeth Moss drama, based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, was an immediate hit for Hulu: last month’s debut episode was the most-watched—and most-acclaimed—premiere in the streaming network’s history.

In the era of Peak TV, the degree of difficulty is higher than ever for shows and networks as they try to make an impact with viewers.

That’s what makes this year’s TV Hot List winners so impressive, as the list reveals all the ways the industry is changing—from Netflix taking up all the oxygen (and much of the top talent like Adweek’s TV Creator of the Year Kenya Barris) in the TV space to megamergers like the Discovery-Scripps union that put Adweek’s TV Executive of the Year Kathleen Finch in charge of 11 networks—and how much it’s stayed the same, from the continued resilience of broadcast shows like The Big Bang Theory to the revival of many of our favorite shows from the past, like Queer Eye and Murphy Brown.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

The CBS comedy juggernaut, which is now in its 12th and final season, will be going out on top, as its audiences prop up not one but two networks.

Big Bang was the most-watched prime-time show last season, averaging a whopping 18.8 million viewers, while its syndicated episodes continue to keep TBS on top in the demo among entertainment cable networks.

No more seasons of Scandal for ABC?

It’s been a remarkable year for journalism and storytelling, as legacy media outlets continue to find their new identities in this rapidly evolving digital era.

We’ve seen great leadership from media executives from Bob Cohn, president of The Atlantic, who has seen revenue increase across all sectors (total revenue is up 13 percent), to Adweek’s Editor of the Year Dean Baquet, who has lead coverage of some of the most important stories out of today’s fast-paced news cycle as executive editor of The New York Times.

Here are our Hot List winners in publishing for 2018:

Publishing Executive of the Year

Daniel Lombroso / The Atlantic

The news media business isn’t easy, which is why news of an ambitious period of growth at The Atlantic announced earlier this year was met with surprise.

One of the latest and most useful forms of marketing called Quick Response codes, or QR codes, is living up to its name, however, and getting just that -- a very quick response.

With their reliance on bar codes, QR codes do not represent a new technology by any means.

But they're on the 21st-century marketing hot list for reshaping the one-way bar-code system to make it more interactive.

The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background.

The medium was developed to allow content to be decoded at high speed.

But after I tried a few and started to see how they worked and what businesses used them for, I began to understand not only the value in bar-code marketing but also the huge potential for businesses, large and small.

SNL hasn’t been doing many advertising spoofs so far this season, but last night they went one better—creating a trio of vintage advertising spoofs, as part of a fun Ad Council skit.

Host Larry David played an adman—with a Jeff Goodby-esque ponytail and all—being honored with a lifetime achievement award for a career of purportedly outstanding PSAs.

But as soon as some of his 30-year-old spots begin to screen at the Ad Council dinner, the room is suddenly horrified by them.

It’s a bit ironic that Saturday’s SNL had a skit about David having created content in poor taste, considering the episode mostly made headlines for David’s monologue—which some considered actually in poor taste.

Cecily Strong did an admirable job the skit’s emcee role, too, having had some experience emceeing actual advertising events—including hosting Adweek’s 2013 Hot List Gala.
