The 2017 Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday kickoff to the holiday shopping season produced big results for retailers.

As expected, smartphones and tablets continued to be a big draw for holiday shoppers.

iPhone X Edges out the Pixel 2 and Galaxy Note 8 in a Close Battle

We analyzed both Android and Apple devices to see which devices experienced the highest lift in new activations over the Thanksgiving weekend, compared to the average activations from the previous four weekends.

The iPhone X emerged as the ultimate victor as it experienced a 47% growth of new device activations compared to the past four weekends.

I spoke with Lou Orfanos, VP of Product of Localytics earlier this week.

Orfanos said that Places was developed in response to customer demand.

In its press materials and on its site Localytics offers a varied range of use cases for Places, from location analytics to audience segmentation to content strategy and app-engagement scenarios:

A retail app can use the data to understand times of peak foot traffic, evaluate the potential success of a new store location, and gain insight into which stores are driving the most traffic.

A travel app could send points-of- interest tips to travellers visiting a new city or a ticketing app could send an offer to sporting enthusiasts in the area of an upcoming game.

Orfanos observed that the industry has fixated on app user acquisition but has focused much less effort on retention.

Obviously Localytics thinks it can help with Places.

A third of the iPhones now in use are three or more years old, an app analytics vendor said a day before Apple unveils the new iPhone 7.

According to Boston-based Localytics, 32 percent of all iPhones used in August were models that debuted in 2013 or earlier, with that year s iPhone 5s the third-most popular device at 17 percent.

Others, including 2012 s iPhone 5 and 2011 s iPhone 4S, accounted for single digit shares.

Localytics measured share by tallying the models among more than 100 million iPhones that reported data to the app developers that use its analytics tools.

The top two models—2014 s iPhone 6 and last year s iPhone 6s—accounted for 30 percent and 19 percent of the total, respectively, with the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6S Plus representing 9 percent and 8 percent.

Apple s only previous iPhone this year, the smaller 4-inch iPhone SE, accounted for just 2 percent of all models, Localytics said.

Localytics, the Boston-based mobile engagement platform, has acquired Berlin’s Tapglue, which offered mobile app developers an API and backend service to enable them to easily add social features to their apps.

Terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

In what I’m going to dub as at least partly an acqui-hire, the purchase sees Localytics open a new Berlin office — its second in Europe, adding to an existing presence in London — to be led by the Tapglue team.

Meanwhile, the Tapglue platform is being shuttered, though it will live on as an open source offering and made available for free to the mobile developer community.

Of note, the acquisition signals the merger of two Techstars Boston startup accelerator program graduates: Localytics graduated in 2009, and Tapglue in 2016.

Tapglue was founded in 2015 by Norman Wiese and Onur Akpolat to make it easier for developers to add a social layer and other engagement features to their apps.

To learn more and subscribe, please click here.Samsung owners spend, on average, about 84 minutes per month in apps — 22% more than iPhone users, according to Localytics.

Samsung's dominance is notable, considering the importance of engagement rates for developers.

Localytics measured time in app by frequency — the average number of app launches each month — and length — the average session length per month.

For developers, the difference in app engagement metrics is important to consider, particularly amid the supposed "app engagement crisis.

" And although iOS users spend more money in app than Android users, on average, this revenue is being divvied among just a few.

There are now well over 3 million apps available across the world s five largest app stores.

The iPhone X is already showing strong consumer adoption, according to a new report from Localytics out today, despite the fact that long shipping delays for pre-orders mean many customers have yet to receive their devices.

That said, iPhone X managed to grab 0.93 percent of the overall market share for iPhones after the first weekend of sales, the firm found.

To be clear, this data isn’t referencing iPhone sales – it instead measures market share based on consumers’ app usage.

Localytics runs a mobile engagement platform across 2.7 billion devices and 37,000 mobile and web apps, which is how it’s able to collect this data.

For this specific report, the firm says it examined over 70 million iOS devices.

It then compared this weekend’s data (Nov. 3, 2017 – Nov. 5, 2017 at 2 PM ET) to historical data on older iPhone models.
