The idea for this tennis robot was born after years of table tennis matches against each other and when they began studying in different parts built one brother a prototype robot to practice in secret.

A dozen prototypes later, has now launched Trainerbot on Kickstarter.

The project is seeking 80,000 dollars and if you want one you have to donate at least $ 329 excluding shipping.

With Trainerbot can, via an associated mobile app, create your own workouts so you can get better at the different tennis teams.

You can set each on the table the ball will land, how fast it will go and whether there should be any spin on the ball.

A robot designed to swing between cables suspended over crop rows to monitor plants has been developed by US university Georgia Tech.

The prototype robot, called Tarzan, will gather information about the plants and send it to the farmer.

The team plan to test Tarzan on a soybean farm later this year and believe it will be ready for release in three years.

A few weeks ago we told you about the U.S. Marine Corps plans for laser weaponry.

That s not the only way the Corps is looking to modernize its fighting force, as officials have now announced an internal competition to research and fund ways for robots to replace humans on a variety of tasks.

The Marines already have teams tasked with developing battlefield robots, and have a prototype robot that works together with others in teams to supplement ground forces.

However, here the effort is aimed at giving others outside of those robotics teams — whether they are military or civilians working with the Marines — a chance to get their ideas in front of the military brass.

Officials are looking for participants to identify missions or tasks assigned to your unit that currently requires a Marine or Marines to accomplish, that could, and should, be replaced by robotic, autonomous, or unmanned systems.

Missions or tasks that are prime candidates for autonomous solutions are typically dull, dirty or dangerous in nature, according to a video launching the contest.

In conjunction with Rice University in the US, IBM is developing a series of sensors that can someday live inside a robot interface to help senior citizens stay safe.

Susanne Keohane, senior technologist at IBM Research, says the project addresses a growing need for technology that helps aging populations preserve both their independence and their overall health, while also avoiding disruption in their daily lives.

If you slap an Apple Watch on an 88-year-old, that s not feasible for most 88-year-olds, Keohane tells Business Insider.

Keohane says technology must be wholly intuitive for senior citizens to use it on a regular basis.

Now researchers from the University of Tokyo have developed a new aerial-biped robot that can fly using a quadrotor (another term for quadcopter).

The robot also has servo motors in its leg joints to enable movement.

Designed more for entertainment than anything utilitarian, the amusing-looking prototype robot looks like it's walking or dancing using its slim dangly legs.

Bipedal robots often suffer from slow and heavy motions that cause them to fall.

But this aerial biped robot uses a physics simulator that senses the velocity of the quadrotor and automatically makes the legs move, according to an IEEE Spectrum interview Monday with Azumi Maekawa, lead researcher of a paper on the robot presented at the Siggraph conference in Vancouver.

UK robotics startup and TechCrunch Disrupt London 2015 battlefield alum Emotech has closed more than $10 million in Series A funding to continue working on its prototype robot assistant.

It s building a personality adapting AI-powered robot called Olly.

The team intended to demo their robot on stage at TC Disrupt last December pictured above but had some technical difficulties with the early prototype.

They say they re now focusing on a big push for CES 2017 to show off a more polished device in January — and that s what the funding is being used for.

The investment comes from two Chinese VC firms: Alliance Capital and lead investor Lightning Capital, the latter a new VC firm focused on AI and health tech and based in Shanghai, according to Emotech.

In terms of launch timeframe for Olly, they re slating early next year — with an English version of the bot set to come first.

United Kingdom online supermarket Ocado wants to establish itself as one of the most tech-savvy ecommerce companies around — and it’s got the (prototype) robot to prove it.

Called ARMAR-6, the humanoid bot is being developed as part of the European Commission’s SecondHands project.

It is now being put through its paces by Ocado’s innovation wing, Ocado Technology, with the goal of one day working alongside humans in its warehouses.

“The SecondHands project aims to create a robot that provides help to our warehouse technicians in a proactive manner,” Alex Voica, head of Technology PR and Communications for Ocado, told Digital Trends.

“Our warehouses include state-of-the-art automation and robotics systems, and our technicians and operations engineers are tasked with ensuring that they function 24/7, 365 days a year.

The ultimate goal is for the robot to use machine learning and computer vision to scan its surrounding environment and identify tasks it could help with.

The newspaper said the two companies are in final talks, but details are yet to be discussed so the deal could still fall through.

The deal would see Boston Dynamics, a developer of advanced two- and four-legged robots for the U.S. military, and Schaft, a Tokyo-based developer of humanoid robots, transferred to the Toyota Research Institute.

The unit is a recently launched billion-dollar research arm based in Silicon Valley.

Google acquired Boston Dynamics and Schaft several years ago as part of a push into robotics, but that hasn't gone anywhere since robotics head Andy Rubin left the company in late 2014.

Toyota has been researching robotics for more than 10 years and the acquisition of the Google units would give the company access to cutting-edge robotics development, especially in the field of humanoid robots.

While this robot made from random branches struggling to crawl across the floor is comparatively sad to watch, it represents the future of robotics as the bot learned those moves all by itself.

The robot was created as part of a joint venture between researchers at the University of Tokyo and a company called Preferred Networks, who have expertise in research involving deep learning and artificial intelligence.

And that’s the key to how this robot (which is a generous description of this creation) manages to move around no matter what size, shape, or assortment of branches it’s assembled from.

Before it ever takes its first steps, the branches that will be used to build the robot are weighed, scanned in 3D, and then uploaded to a deep learning network.

Using this shape and size information, as well as specifics about the type of servos being used to connect the branches and their range of motions, allows an AI to simulate how a prototype robot might move.

We can’t make textural expressions like these (although it does sometimes happen to us involuntarily), but we can often do a reasonable job of interpreting them when we see them: Anything that grows spikes, for example, probably prefers not to be touched.

Guy Hoffman’s Human-Robot Collaboration & Companionship (HRC2) Lab at Cornell University is working on a new robot that’s designed to investigate this concept of textural communication, which really hasn’t been explored in robotics all that much.

Each texture module consists of multiple texture units arranged in a grid, all of which actuate at the same time.

Adding air causes the texture units to inflate, popping up above the surface of the texture module to form shapes that can be both seen and felt.

The researchers equipped their prototype robot with two different kinds of texture units: Goosebumps, which form rounded domes when inflated, and spikes, which include rigid little pokey bits.
