Waymo launched a campaign earlier this week alongside partners, including the National Safety Council, to help explain why it believes that its pursuit of autonomous driving is a means to safer roads.

Now it’s releasing its first-ever Safety Report, which offers more detail on the procedures and technology it uses to ensure safety in deploying its autonomous fleet.

The 42-page document includes a summary overview of how Waymo’s cars function at a basic level, including under what conditions they work (and are designed to work exclusively) and how they “fail” back to a safe stop as a final fallback.

It also explains what happens after a crash, should there be one, and what kind of data is recorded, as well as what measures are taken in terms of cybersecurity on the Waymo vehicles.

Waymo also details both its hardware and software testing processes, including crash avoidance and the overall durability of its sensors and other equipment.

Finally, it spells out how a rider experiences driving in its cars, and how the technology works in the case of interacting with emergency vehicles, law enforcement and other first responders.

A new report from the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) says Amazon needs to stop meddling in workers’ efforts to unionize and to reduce line speeds in its facilities.

The report is based on interviews about psychological and economic stress, as well as occupational pain and injuries, with 145 workers at Amazon’s warehouse in Staten Island, N.Y. As a result, NYCOSH concluded Amazon prioritizes productivity over workplace health and safety.

For example, the committee said 80% of Amazon warehouse workers feel pressure to work harder and/or faster.

One employee in Staten Island said the quota system requires them to handle at least 2,000 units per day, which works out to four items a minute.

In addition, to boost efficiency, NYCOSH said Amazon has software to optimize product storage and travel routes for pickers, but it doesn’t necessarily have workers’ best interests in mind.

“Analysis of such models show that, too often, they prioritize management-oriented efficiency criteria at the expense of human factors, such as worker health and safety concerns,” the report said.

Waymo, the Alphabet business working on autonomous cars, has released its first safety report, a recap of 3.5m miles of on-road activity.

“That’s why Waymo has been investing in safety and building the processes that give us the con dence that our self-driving vehicles can serve the public’s need for safer transportation and better mobility.”

Autonomous vehicles need to address four basics, Waymo explains.

Third, they have to predict what might happen next in that environment, and finally they have to reach a decision based on all of that information.

As we’ve seen, it’s a complex combination of cameras, radar and other sensors, LIDAR laser rangefinders, and a whole host of onboard computers, mashing that data up with high-resolution maps that’s responsible for doing all that.

Waymo cars can see up to 984 feet away in all directions, using computer vision to classify other cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users and potential hazards.

It hasn't been a year since one of Uber's self-driving vehicles accidentally struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, but the transportation company believes it's ready to get back to work soon, as safely as possible.

Uber has applied to bring its self-driving vehicles to public roads in Pittsburgh, the Associated Press reports.

Alongside this news, Uber released a 70-page safety report, covering the entirely of Uber's self-driving-vehicle development from soup to nuts, starting with high-level reasoning for believing in autonomy, and finishing with details of how it will work through each stage of development.

Representatives the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation did not immediately return a request for comment, and Uber pointed to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's introductory letter in the safety report as its official statement.

Another sitting shotgun, called the Co-Pilot, will be monitoring and taking note of the vehicle's behavior using a laptop.

The driver was one of the major sticking points of the fatal crash in Tempe.

Recent EV fires have spurred the Chinese government into mandating that makers of battery-electric vehicles re-examine and validate their designs for safety, according to a report published Monday by Bloomberg.

Specifically, China is requiring electric car manufacturers to check their designs for battery pack enclosures, the waterproofing of those enclosures, high-voltage wiring and charge controllers.

The companies are being required to complete their self-evaluations by October of 2019.

This move by China comes after a pair of Tesla fires occurred this year -- one in Shanghai and another in Hong Kong -- made global news, thanks to video clips shared via social media.

The latest incident (and perhaps the last straw) was a fire involving a vehicle made by Chinese company NIO.

China's mandate isn't limited to new production vehicles either.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) just published its preliminary report on a fatal Tesla Model 3 crash in March, finding that Autopilot was enabled at the time of the incident – and that the crash bears several similarities to another tragedy in 2016.

"The driver engaged the Autopilot about 10 seconds before the collision," reads the NTSB report.

"From less than 8 seconds before the crash to the time of impact, the vehicle did not detect the driver's hands on the steering wheel."

The roof of the Tesla was sheared off as it collided with a truck-tractor towing a semitrailer, killing the 50-year old man who was driving.

Neither driver "executed evasive maneuvers" according to the report.

Uber is planning to put its self-driving car technology back on the streets in Pennsylvania after it suspended the programme earlier this year.

The ride-sharing company ceased operations of the programme in several cities following a fatal crash in which one of its cars was involved in Tempe, Arizona in March.

An Uber spokesperson told Gizmodo that the company does not have any immediate plans to return its autonomous cars to public streets, though it has resumed on-road testing in manual mode.

After releasing its safety report to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday, the company will now await authorisation from Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation before resuming testing of its self-driving technology.

According to Reuters, the company said in its report that it would enable automatic braking, employ improved oversight and training for its workers, and ensure that two employees would ride in either of the front seats of its autonomous vehicles during testing.

Uber said a key recommendation of an internal review after the Tempe crash was to improve the self-driving vehicles’ “overall software system design.” Uber said in its safety report released Friday the vehicle had improved “system latency,” allowing it to detect objects and actors sooner and execute safe reactions faster.

Investigators are currently pouring over black box data to figure what caused Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 to crash last week.

The cause of the is yet unknown.

According to IATA Safety Report 2017, the most common contributing factor was flight crew error.

Investigators are currently digging through data from the doomed plane's black boxes to determine the cause of the crash.

Even though Boeing's controversial MCAS control system has been mentioned as something that may have contributed to the crash, the ultimate cause of the deadly incident has not been determined.

The operative word here being "contributing."

Threats to international travelers include gender and politically based violence and kidnapping, sexual assault, & civil unrest. Low profile crime such as ‘pan-handling’ at major intersections do occur, but statistics suggest that this is no more than in any other large city in the world. International foreigners may be targeted due to anti U.S./Western sentiments, which can quickly manifest into large-scale demonstrations and protests which are vigorously dealt with by the local Police.
