Sometimes it gets difficult to see whether life is influencing art or art influencing life.

And then every once in a while, a Hollywood screenwriter acid-binges his way through a heady weekend and comes out the other side with a vision of the future that is so mad it is full to the brim with devices that aren't even close to existing yet.

With Luc Besson behind the lens at TechRadar today, we've decided to look at some of the amazing futuristic tech from films that we now can get our grubby little real life hands on.

Lucky for us, real life science is always aping the ideas of Californian movie producers and, on occasion, the boffins produce the goods.

We live in an exciting time when the fantasies of our childhoods are starting to become a reality.

Alright, we haven't seen radioactive arachnids or time stopping devices (yet), but we have dipped our hands into the magic hat of robotics and pulled out bionic arms and self assembling robots.

This article was originally published by Martin Banks on Clean Fleet Report, a publication that gives its readers the information they need to move to cars and trucks with best fuel economy, including electric cars, fuel cells, plug-in hybrids, hybrids and advanced diesel and gasoline engines. Is Air Power Blowing Over the Horizon? At the moment, the most viable mode of sustainable transportation is an electric vehicle (EV). With more and more automakers announcing new EV designs every year, it’s reasonable to believe that EVs are here to stay. However, some automakers are exploring different forms of green energy —…

Netflix has a new original sci-fi film called What Happened to Monday available to stream on Friday, starring Noomi Rapace playing seven different characters.

The movie’s fictional world has a global law against having more than one child, to stem overpopulation, but the father of Noomi’s characters goes against the grain when he has identical septuplets.

A sci-fi movie where one female lead plays a whole bunch of identical characters?

Sounds like a film version of cult favorite series ‘Orphan Black.’ And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Plus, it also stars Willem Dafoe and Glenn Close in addition to Rapace.

Based on the clip above, this will be a more visceral and brutal action sci-fi story than ‘Orphan Black’ could be with its more general TV audience.

In the classic 1966 American science fiction film Fantastic Voyage, a submarine crew was miniaturised and injected into a body to fix a blood clot in the brain.

That’s obviously not how future medical science is going to work, but the notion of creating microscopic machines to perform complex tasks is certainly on point.

It’s still early days for nanotech, but new research from the California Institute of Technology is showcasing the tremendous potential of this pint-sized technology.

A CalTech research team headed by Anupama Thubagere and Lulu Qian has built robots from DNA, and programmed them to bring individual molecules to a designated location.

There are currently three emerging fields within DNA nanoscience, the science of creating molecular-sized devices out of DNA: The self-assembly of nanostructures from DNA strands, molecular computation and data storage, and DNA robotics, which is the focus of the study published today in Science.

The central premise of DNA nanoscience is that, rather than creating molecular devices or systems from scratch, we can leverage the power of nature, which has already figured much of this out.

Not every sci-fi movie or TV show gets its future predictions right.

We previously covered science fiction movies and TV shows that eerily manage to predict the future with surprising accuracy.

But not every forecast can be quite so perfect.

When it comes to guesses about either technological advances, political changes in society, or — heck — sci-fi writers’ sustained belief that the U.S. government is one financial meltdown away from organizing Hunger Games-style events, not all predictions can be winners.

Soylent Green is a great 1970s movie starring Charlton Heston.

It’s a brilliant blend of pessimistic sci-fi, police procedural, and post-Watergate conspiracy theory.

In a previous list, we discussed the technologies that were once science fiction, now turned science fact.

You can’t throw a DVD in a video store (or whatever the 2018 version of that sentence would be) without hitting a sci-fi flick in which lasers being used as offensive weapons.

Unfortunately, despite some pretty cool laser-related technologies we’ve covered here at Digital Trends, we’re still not living in a world in which laser guns are a mainstream technology.

Maybe it’s the lack of “pew-pew” sounds!

AGI, also known as strong AI, refers to a more generalized intelligence that isn’t limited to one single domain.

One definition of AGI refers to the coffee test, in which a robot should be able to go into the average American home and work out how to make a coffee.
