Security giant Avast has announced it intends to acquire fellow Czech-based antivirus software maker AVG for a purchase price of $25.00 per share in cash — resulting in a transaction that will total around $1.3 billion.

It also wants to build out its security offerings with an eye on emerging growth opportunities such as in the Internet of Things, as well as on serve existing customers with more advanced products.

Organization efficiencies are also expected as a result of the acquisition, so presumably there will be some staff reductions owing to duplicate roles.

US-based co-working giant WeWork laid off roughly 3 percent of its workforce – about 300 employees – in what it described as “performance-related dismissals.”

WeWork, which operates shared office spaces around the world, suggested the staff reductions were a small culling ahead of a hiring spree.

A spokesman told Bloomberg that the company has 10,000 employees and plans to add 6,000 this year.

The company has attracted huge piles of investor money, which it uses to snap up office space in the largest cities globally.

The multi-billion investments from SoftBank have put WeWork back on the offensive especially in Asia, which is driving growth for the business.

Its most recent commitment is to invest further in South Korea, where WeWork will “continue to invest in as [the company] sees a growing number of individuals and startups seeking support and a sense of community,” according to Yonhap.

HONG KONG—A year and a half ago, Lenovo Group Ltd. LNVGY -5.26 % spent $5 billion to buy its way into growth sectors such as smartphones and servers as the personal-computer market slowed.

The Chinese PC maker underestimated how difficult it would be to integrate its 2014 acquisition of Motorola Mobility s handset business, Lenovo Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing said in an interview Thursday.

Mr. Yang said in the interview that he expects losses to continue at the company s mobile unit in the short-term but added he was optimistic he could turn it around and pursue profitable growth over time.

In the competitive China market, Mr. Yang pointed to a shift in the handset business model where smartphones that were once sold solely through wireless carriers are now sold directly to consumers.

The company said last August it would cut $650 million from expenses at the unit over the second half of the year, including staff reductions.

The department was over-optimistic about reducing staff in the transition to digital services

HM Revenue and Customs HMRC risks losing the confidence of individuals and businesses in the development of new digital systems because it has not fully estimated the costs for taxpayers or given a clear idea of the potential benefits of the new systems.

This is according to the National Audit Office NAO , which said HMRC has also failed to address a previous overestimate of the numbers of staff reductions that would be made possible by new digital systems.

HMRC was over-optimistic about how much change it could deliver all at once, and how fast it could reduce demand for telephone contact in particular, the NAO said in a report on the department s accounts for 2015/16.

This resulted in a collapse of its service to personal taxpayers in 2014/15 and the first half of 2015/16.

HMRC has since recovered the quality of its service to personal taxpayers by recruiting more staff and has adjusted its future resource plans in the light of this experience.
