Every few years, the Taurid meteor shower puts on a particularly good show.

New research shows there could be a reason for that, and it's not good news for humans.

A team of Czech astronomers analyzed 144 fireballs seen during the last hyperactive Taurid shower in 2015 and concluded a "new branch" of the Taurids exists that the Earth drifts through every few years.

While great for shooting-star fans, the bad news is this newfound orbital structure contains at least two asteroids that are nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) across, and probably more big ones that haven't been spotted yet.

"Since asteroids of sizes of tens to hundreds of meters pose a threat to the ground even if they are intrinsically weak, impact hazard increases significantly when the Earth encounters the Taurid new branch every few years," the researchers write in a new paper accepted for publication in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Like most meteor showers, the Taurids are the leftover debris cloud of a passing comet or some other large celestial body.

Social media is proving to be a useful tool for scientists, and not just for observing the downfall of society in real-time.

The University of Exeter, using Twitter as its source of data, has discovered that over 1,000 sharks are being "starved and suffocated" after getting caught up in plastic and fishing nets.

Concerned that such instances were flying "under the radar" when compared to issues like over-fishing that get tend to get more coverage, Twitter reports were combined with research that's already out there to essentially crowdsource the data.

Using this method, researchers found 1,116 reports of the fish getting tangle up in fishing fear and plastic, including whale sharks, great whites, tiger sharks and basking sharks.

This is compared to a big fat zero reports cropping up in published studies, leading them to conclude that "entanglement is more than likely impacting a significantly greater number of species on a vastly larger scale than this review has presented."

While they state that this is a "far lesser threat" to marine animals than over-fishing, they highlight that it's still a "major animal welfare concern."
