Microsoft has pushed out another batch of updates for the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4, which address issues related to the touchscreen and stylus performance, among other tweaks.

The firmware updates were detailed on Reddit – as spotted by Win Beta – and are apparently rolling out now.

Once applied and after a reboot, of course you'll hopefully notice a difference in terms of the way the pen performs, and responsiveness of the touchscreen in general.

Some of the commenters on Reddit noted that the touchscreen seemed to be less laggy post-update, and that the performance of the Surface Pen was clearly much slicker in OneNote.

Handy boons indeed, plus the updates also include new drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology, ironing out some problems with flaky sound on the Surface devices.

You can manually check for these updates by going to Settings – in the Windows Start menu – then click Update & Security, Windows Update, and then select Check for Updates.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro, whether it’s the new Pro 7, the 2018 Surface Pro 6, or one of the older versions, straddles the line between laptop and tablet by offering users a full-featured computing experience in a compact package.

It’s a powerful device, but right out of the box it can seem a little barebones; without a keyboard or Surface Pen, it’s just a Windows-based tablet.

The Surface Pen is such an essential part of the Surface Pro experience that previous versions just included it in the box.

On its own, the Surface Pen is a versatile tool for note-taking or artistic endeavors, but it’s still not quite as tactile as a real pen or pencil.

With the optional tip kit, however, it comes remarkably close to the real thing.

These optional tips allow users to customize the friction and drag of their Surface Pens, based on use or just personal preference.

With the Surface Pro X, Microsoft’s taken a new approach to the Surface brand with this piece of hardware.

They’ve still got the kickstand, they’re still suggesting that users work with a Surface Pen, but something’s changed.

With the imagery used to promote this device, you’ll notice that the focus on Windows is ever-so-slightly de-focused.

This is a far more mobile situation.

If you take a look at the latest smart-connecting keyboard for this device, you’ll see what I mean.

Notice how the Surface Pen has its own little snug bin there at the head of the keyboard.

In fleshing out its tablet range with the Surface Go, Microsoft is looking to offer a decidedly cheaper option for prospective Surface buyers.

But how does the Surface Go measure up to its bigger brother, the Surface Pro?

In this head to head, we pitted the Surface Go versus the Surface Pro to find out where the best value for money lies.

It sports a fantastic chassis that’s sleek and sturdy with a solid, premium feel to it.

It’s a little heavier than the Surface Go and measures up at nearly a couple of inches longer, but that doesn’t detract from it being a versatile, compact device.

It has a great hinge that lets it fold out to almost flat (165-degrees) with the kickstand and you can always flip the keyboard around for full tablet mode when needed.

Microsoft has unveiled a refreshed Surface portfolio that includes the Surface Pro X, a redesigned thin two-in-one Windows 10 PC running on ARM processors, as well as the Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3.

The launch event in New York on Wednesday also saw the preview of a folding phone device called the Surface Duo, and a dual-screen tablet called the Surface Neo.

Starting off with the Surface Pro X, which is a redesigned thin two-in-one Windows 10 PC, which is aiming to be a tablet-laptop hybrid.

This device only weights 762 grams, and it comes with the usual detachable Type Cover keyboard from Microsoft’s existing line.

It also offers 4G connectivity, and battery life is said to be far in excess of traditional Intel-powered computers.

Microsoft also updated its Surface Pro 7 (a Windows tablet) and Surface Laptop 3 (laptop), that utilise Intel’s 10th generation Core chips.

p The MacBook Air has been such a hit for Apple the past few years that even Microsoft is making one.

Starting at $999, the Surface Laptop sure looks good–it’s got a MacBook Air price, a wedge shape, weighs 2.76 pounds, the latest Intel core i5 processor, and a high-resolution display.

Well played by Microsoft, but if you look a bit closer it sure looks like Apple’s got the Surface Laptop surrounded.

But look closer: The Air’s got 8GB of RAM to the Surface Laptop’s 4GB.

Microsoft cut the base specs of the Surface Laptop to the bone to get it to $999, and Apple doesn’t seem to be willing to ship a computer with 4GB of RAM anymore.

And while the Surface Laptop’s Mini DisplayPort works fine with external displays, the MacBook Air’s pulls double duty as a Thunderbolt 2 port.

As interesting as the Surface Studio is, especially for artists, it is made even more interesting by the Surface Dial accessory.

But while the Surface Studio won t be shipping until December, the Dial will actually be available starting November 10.

Why the advance party, you might ask?

But even better, if you already have a Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book, you will even be able to use it on those two s displays.

When Microsoft first showed a glimpse of the Surface Dial, there was a bit of an initial deja vu, with the accessory s similarities with the Griffin PowerMate, a Mac-specific accessory that gave radial controls to almost anything, from art apps to multimedia playback.

Unlike the PowerMate, the Surface Dial can be placed on the Surface Studio s display itself.

The Surface family has seen the addition of a Book, a Laptop, a Studio and also the ultra-portable Go, but the Surface Pro itself has remained relatively visually unchanged.

Though the Surface Pro pioneered the 2-in-1 form factor its design has stayed the same over the last seven years and is now aging by 2019 standards.

The Surface Pro 6 was most recently announced during an October 2 event, but the Surface Go was announced on July ahead of its eventual August 2 release.

As for pricing, the Surface Pro 6 with 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and the Intel Core i5 processor currently retails for $900.

That price still does not include a keyboard or a Surface Pen.

It would be nice to see Microsoft bundle in both with the next Surface to help reduce the overall final price, but we don’t expect that to change.

p Microsoft has revealed its new Surface Pro, with supposed better performance and an increased battery life.

This new Surface Pro ups power longevity to 13.5 hours – 50 per cent more life than the Surface Pro 4 – while 7th Generation Intel Core processors claim to make it 2.5 times faster than Surface Pro 3 and some 20 per cent better than the 4.

The industrial design has also been tweaked with ever so slightly softer, rounded edges as well as cameras designed to blend better into the bezel at the top of the screen.

At 8.5mm thin, and starting at 0.77 kilograms, this Pro has a new hinge design that adjusts to 165 degrees so it can morph into "Studio Mode" and visibly lie flatter than the previous model.

The dimensions and the screen resolution of the new Surface Pro remain unchanged with the 12.3in PixelSense touch display, but a new version of the Surface Pen in four colours has a reduced latency and bumps up the pressure sensitivity from 1,024 levels to 4,096 levels.

It also will allow a "tilt" function, which should be ideal for using the pen for shading, for example.

Microsoft has been in the software game for decades, but, Xbox consoles aside, only in recent years has the tech giant dipped its toes into the hardware arena with its surprisingly great Surface devices.

The Microsoft Surface lineup contains some great Windows tablets (a couple of which are on sale right now), but it also features a few unique lightweight ultrabooks like the Surface Laptop and Surface Book.

Despite an increasingly crowded market for ultrabooks and 2-in-1 laptops, these super-sleek Surface laptops have managed to leave their mark, cementing Microsoft’s foray into PC hardware design a largely successful one.

If you’re in the market for a featherweight Windows laptop, read on:

Given how much laptop hardware has slimmed down over the past few years, it’s no surprise that featherweight “ultrabooks” like the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 are quickly becoming the future of portable PCs.

The MacBook Air arguably kickstarted this trend, but Apple is no longer the only game in town, and the Surface Laptop 2 is a solid alternative for Windows users.

Microsoft could be preparing to return to a black color for its upcoming Surface hardware.

While the software giant originally launched its Surface RT in a black “VaporMg” magnesium alloy, the company quickly switched to a silver color for the Surface 2.

German site Windows United originally reported that Microsoft will be launching a new black variant for its Surface hardware, and now Thurrott reports this will include both the Surface Laptop 2 and refreshed Surface Pro.

Microsoft is expected to unveil refreshes of both the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro at an event in New York City on October 2nd.

The new models will likely include Intel’s latest processors, a switch to USB-C, and a possible new black color variant.

If the reports are genuine, this will be the first time a modern Surface Pro has a new color across the entire device, and not just the Type Cover.

The entry-level device was launched in May 2015 as a cheaper alternative to the Surface Pro 3.

While it was well received, especially among budget-conscious consumers who didn't want to step up to a full laptop, the last few weeks have seen stock levels and configuration options become limited.

In a statement to ZDNet, Microsoft said it would wind down production over the next six months, with all Surface 3 manufacturing ending by the end of December 2016.

While this kind of behavior is usually seen just before the announcement of new or updated hardware, Microsoft currently has no successor to the tablet in the pipeline.

As ArsTechnica notes, there's currently a lack of options for Microsoft when it comes to low-power, budget-level processors that would be needed for a replacement to the standard Surface 3.

Unless Microsoft has decided to abandon the entry-level Surface lineup altogether, Windows tablet users will likely be waiting until 2017 for a new hardware announcement.
