Millennials have already lost so much: A relatively secure housing market, the hope of stable careers, and an Earth that wasn’t completely littered with the mistakes of Baby Boomers.

Today, planetary geologist Kirby Runyon will present a new definition of “planet” at the 48th Lunar Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, undoubtedly rekindling the flames of controversy.

Runyon’s definition does away with a key International Astronomical Union (IAU) requirement for planethood—namely, that the object is massive enough to clear the neighbourhood around its orbit.

Instead, it focuses on the geophysical properties that set planets apart from smaller and less complex objects.

A planet, according to Runyon, is “A substellar mass body that has never undergone nuclear fusion and that has enough gravitation to be round due to hydrostatic equilibrium regardless of its orbital parameters.” By this definition, many moons in our solar system—including our own—would be reclassified as planets.

If you can’t justify a billion dollar mission without having to change around whatever everybody thinks about the planet, really someone should take away the keys to your spacecraft.

But the truth is, these little guys—and there are six currently recognized within our solar system—deserve just as much love as their mightier planetary cousins.

Good news for them: a new study suggests that the dwarf planet club could get another member, in the form of a very small, distant object located roughly 92 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun.

Planetary body 2014 UZ224, also known as DeeDee (short for “distant dwarf”), has been getting a lot of attention from a team of scientists who’ve observed it using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.

Though DeeDee was first discovered using the Blanco telescope in 2014, this new study has been able to record its size for the first time.

By picking up DeeDee’s heat signature, the ALMA data suggests the object is about 635 kilometers across, about two-thirds the diameter of dwarf planet Ceres.

If DeeDee has enough mass to be spherical, it would meet the criteria for the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to recognize it as a dwarf planet.

Astronomers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a star that’s barely bigger than Saturn, making it the smallest stellar object known to science.

The title of this new Astronomy & Physics study pretty much says it all: “A Saturn-size low-mass star at the hydrogen-burning limit.” This tiny star, called EBLM J0555-57Ab, is about as small as stars can get according to physics, but it’s also one of the densest active stellar objects ever discovered.

The gravitational pull at the surface of this object is about 300 times stronger than what we experience here on Earth—which means it has just enough mass to trigger the fusion of hydrogen nuclei into helium.

“Had this star formed with only a slightly lower mass, the fusion reaction of hydrogen in its core could not be sustained, and the star would instead have transformed into a brown dwarf.”

Indeed, brown dwarfs may be hot and big, but they lack enough mass to sustain stable hydrogen fusion at their cores, which is why they’re sometimes referred to as “failed stars.” But this newly discovered star, dubbed EBLM J0555-57Ab, was massive enough to get a passing grade, meeting the standards for a full-fledged star.

Prior to the new discovery, the smallest star recorded by scientists was OGLE-TR-122b, a red dwarf star that’s 20 percent bigger than the largest planet in our Solar System, Jupiter.

The Juno spacecraft safely reached orbit at Jupiter on the night of July 4th.

Traveling at a speed of 165,000 mph toward a swirling gas giant Monday night, the Juno spacecraft would have no second chances.

But Juno needed no second chance late on the night of July 4th as its hardy little engine fired for a total 2,102 seconds, perfect to within one second, inserting the spacecraft neatly into orbit around Jupiter.

Back on Earth engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California cheered heartily.

During the last five years a team of 300 engineers have guided Juno along its path.

Moments after the orbital insertion Scott Bolton, the mission s principal investigator, saluted the team of engineers, telling them they were the best ever.

the Menus can, however, look a bit different depending on which operating system you are using with the features should be the same.

to begin with, you need to see if it is so that your Mac does not start up, or to not go running.

In November 2016, Nintendo surprised everyone by going back to its roots and releasing the NES Classic.

The delightful emulator/nostalgia-fest sparked unanticipated demand, including near-instant supply issues and 200-percent-plus markups in secondary markets.

Against my better judgment, I’ve tried a couple of times to snag one of those adorable little $60 mini NES Classic Editions—once when Amazon put some of its limited stock online and crashed its own site, and once when Walmart was shipping out small quantities every day a couple of weeks ago.

But the dumb itch of nostalgia can’t always be scratched by logical thoughts like “do you really need to pay money for Super Mario Bros. 3 again,” and “Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is probably the weakest of the three NES Castlevania games.” Since it’s not entirely clear if or when those little mini NESes will become readily available, I decided to funnel that small wad of expendable cash and the desire for some nostalgia-fueled gaming into a DIY project.

Note: Ars Technica may earn compensation for sales from links on this post through affiliate programs.

I find it helpful when pursuing a new DIY project to start with a list of needs and wants and go from there—possibly a leftover from my IT days helping the non-technically inclined (and actively technology-averse) make purchasing decisions.

During his Memorial Day visit to the USS Wasp (LHD-1) at anchor at Yokosuka, Japan, President Donald Trump made comments indicating that he is ordering changes to the aircraft catapult system of the USS Gerald R. Ford and the remaining ships of its class.

Video: USS Ford’s “digital” catapult, (not quite) ready for duty

Trump has long derided the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), an all-electric aircraft catapult designed for the Ford, as too complicated and too expensive.

After polling the preference of assembled Marines and sailors, he declared he was ordering the Navy to switch to steam.

OK, I really need this information because, you know, we're building carriers.

This is the week when artificially intelligent assistants start getting serious. On Tuesday, Google is expected to announce the final details for Home, its connected speaker with the new Google Assistant built inside. But first Amazon, which surprised everyone last year by practically inventing the AI-in-a-can platform, will release a new version of the Echo Dot, a cheaper and smaller model of the full-sized Echo that promises to put the company's Alexa assistant in every room in your house. The Echo Dot has all the capabilities of the original Echo, but at a much cheaper price, and with a compact form factor that's designed to be tucked away.

Because of its size it looks like a hockey puck from the future , its sound quality isn't as good as the Echo, but it can hook up to an external speaker through a standard audio cable or Bluetooth. And at $49.99, the Echo Dot makes an enticing introduction to the new digital assistant in your home category, and a way for current Echo owners to extend its capabilities throughout the house.

You can also buy a six-pack buy five, get one free or 12-pack buy 10, get two free of Echo Dots if you want to go all out and have Alexa helping you out everywhere in your home. The Dot ships on October 20, and is available for the first time to everyone, not just Amazon Prime members.

This new version has better microphones than its predecessor, but other than that and the slashed price down from $90 , not much else has changed.I connected the Dot to an external speaker with an auxiliary cable, but you're still free to use the built-in speaker if you want.

It's fine for listening to responses from Alexa, but music sounds terrible.

The real magic is having Alexa with you no matter where you are.Plus, if you have a nice stereo system that you still love, the Dot makes a great way to add some smarts to it without spending a fortune on new equipment. In addition to music, Alexa can do all the things you'd expect from a digital assistant by now like checking your calendar appointments, weather, sports scores, etc.
