Today marks the 15th anniversary of Apple s retail stores.

Led by Steve Jobs, the Cupertino-based company opened its first two retail stores, one in Tysons Corner, Virginia and the other in Glendale, California, on May 19, 2001.

A year later, Apple hired former Target marketing executive Ron Johnson who was responsible for transforming the retail store from a K-Mart clone into a trendy chain that specialized in affordable, well-designed housewares.

After what was described as a few false starts, he landed on the concept of focusing on the user experience of Apple's products.

That s an impressive haul when you consider the iPod hadn t even been released yet and the iPhone was still six years away.

These days, Apple s retail stores make more money per square foot than any other retail location.

To understand Apple's global retail footprint, it helps to see it for yourself.

We've compiled a list of every Apple store in the world.

Jump to your favorite country or state via the table of contents, or scroll down to see every store alphabetically.

Today, Apple is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and has over 500 stores in 24 countries around the world.

Apple stores weren't even a "thing" until 2001.

That year, late cofounder Steve Jobs hired Ron Johnson, the former CEO of JCPenney, to help Apple open its first two physical stores in Glendale, California, and Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Today, fifteen years ago, Apple opened the doors of its first two stores.

The location was Tysons Corner, Virginia and Glendale, California.

Virtually all pundits sawn concept altogether, but it was not long before the success was a fact.

Here's what it looked like when Steve Jobs showed off the Apple store for the world:

In the current situation, there are nearly 500 stores around the world, specifically in the US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United UAE.

Altogether they have more than a million visitors a day.

It may be hard to imagine a time before they existed, but Apple's retail stores celebrated their 15th birthday on Thursday. When they first opened, the concept of an Apple Store seemed like a risky proposition — The New York Times called it "an aggressive move during an economic slowdown".

At the time, Apple's computer business was doing ok, but the personal computer landscape was still dominated by Windows PCs.

The iPod was a success, but in the pre-iPhone days Apple didn't have a lot of money to burn on ventures like retail.Fifteen years and 479 stores later, the bet Apple made paid off.

Apple stores generate more revenue per square foot than any other retailer — even jewelry stores.

Before they officially opened, Steve Jobs made a video walkthrough of the Tysons Corner, VA store to give folks an idea of what the stores would look like.

Some things, including the genius bar and long wooden tables, have remained the same, while the overall layout of the stores has since evolved. The video is a blast from the past, and comes from a time when Apple was still the underdog, trying new things to differentiate themselves from all the other PC makers.

Researchers from North Carolina State University and the University of Texas at Austin have developed a technique for detecting types of malware that use a system's architecture to thwart traditional security measures.

"Embedded systems are basically any computer that doesn't have a physical keyboard - from smartphones to Internet of Things devices," says Aydin Aysu, co-author of a paper on the work and an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State.

"Embedded systems are used in everything from the voice-activated virtual assistants in our homes to industrial control systems like those used in power plants.

This form of malware makes use of a system's architectural design, effectively hijacking the hardware in a way that gives outside users control of the system and access to its data.

"We have a good idea of what power consumption looks like when embedded systems are operating normally.

By looking for anomalies in power consumption, we can tell that there is malware in a system - even if we can't identify the malware directly."

San Francisco and Palo Alto may be major tech hubs, but they're not the only places big-name tech companies call home.

Business Insider recently scoured the Fortune 500 list to find such companies.

To compile our list, we skipped right over any tech companies headquartered in the biggest US cities.

From there, we ordered each company's location based on population size, using information from City Data.

The companies on this list are all based in locations with populations under 50,000, as of 2014.

Here are seven tech companies that are based in small-town America:

Following the unveiling of its latest hardware products, Google announced that it will also offer new ways to experience its products for everyone worldwide.

But rather than simply stocking store shelves, the company is going its usual route — by opening pop-up shops.

But it doesn’t stop there — the company has also introduced a new customer service program and a partnership with tech retailer, “b8ta.”

For starters, from October 18 through December 31, those in New York and Chicago will be able to try out Google’s new products at the company’s pop-up shops.

The New York City store is located in SoHo at 131 Green Street, while the Chicago pop-up will be located in Bucktown at 1704 N. Damen.

Store hours have yet to be announced but we’ll update this article when we have more information.

schwit1 shares a report from Aviation Today: A team of government, industry and academic officials successfully demonstrated that a commercial aircraft could be remotely hacked in a non-laboratory setting last year, a DHS official said Wednesday at the 2017 CyberSat Summit in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

"We got the airplane on Sept. 19, 2016.

Two days later, I was successful in accomplishing a remote, non-cooperative, penetration.

[Which] means I didn't have anybody touching the airplane, I didn't have an insider threat.

I stood off using typical stuff that could get through security and we were able to establish a presence on the systems of the aircraft."

Hickey said the details of the hack and the work his team are doing are classified, but said they accessed the aircraft's systems through radio frequency communications, adding that, based on the RF configuration of most aircraft, "you can come to grips pretty quickly where we went" on the aircraft.

MoviePass, the monthly subscription service for seeing movies in theaters, has pulled out of 10 high-traffic AMC theaters, as a negotiating tactic with the theater chain.

AMC, so far, has shown no interest in working with MoviePass or sharing revenue with the service for the foot traffic it brings to theaters.

For instance, in a call with analysts in last year, AMC’s chief executive Adam Aron said that while the theater chain appreciated MoviePass customers’ business, “AMC has absolutely no intention — I repeat, no intention — of sharing any — I repeat, any — of our admissions revenue or our concessions revenue.”

AMC had also previously threatened legal action against the service, which it said devalued the movie-going experience.

Now MoviePass is fighting back by pulling its service from some of AMC’s most-visited theaters, including, per Variety: The AMC Century City 15 in Los Angeles; AMC Mercado 20 in Santa Clara, Calif.; AMC Disney Springs 24 in Orlando, Fl.

: AMC Loews Boston Common 19 in Boston; AMC River East 21 in Chicago; AMC Mission Valley 20 in San Diego; AMC Tysons Corner 16 in McLean, Va.; AMC Veterans 24 in Tampa; AMC Loews Alderwood Mall 16 in Lynwood, Wash.

The line began forming in the predawn hours, as many as 500 people assembling in the darkness.

Opened in May of 2001, the first Apple store (top) was the culmination of the vision of Steve Jobs (inset), who’d tapped a number of retail gurus to help plan a signature space that would free Apple from its longstanding problems at the retail level.

There are now more than 500 Apple Stores in 24 countries—272 of them stateside—and the concept continues to grow and evolve.

Apple raised the curtain on its latest prototype in San Francisco in 2016; it’s busy converting the historic Tower Theater in downtown Los Angeles to house another store; and so far this year, it’s opened new retail locations in Austria, Mexico, Japan and Macau, to name just a few.

With at least one Apple Store in every major city, it’s easy to overlook just how radical a development the stores were—and continue to be.

As Michael Ventura, CEO and founder of design firm Sub Rosa, observes: “These aren’t retail channels as much as they are brand beacons—places where Apple fans, customers and potential new clientele can come to be immersed in the brand.”

Technology titan Google has announced its first-ever physical retail store will be coming this summer in the Chelsea area of New York City.

The brand-new Google Store in Chelsea will be a “space where customers can experience our hardware and services in a helpful way.”This news is a big relief for those who need it the most, as Google is offering a bunch of services and devices, and a physical store makes the brand presence and brand advertising on the next level. At the Google Store, shoppers can browse and buy a much wider selection of products made by Google, varying from Pixel phones to Nest products, Fitbit devices to Pixel books, and more.

This mechanism will help in this pandemic situation and let the store remain less crowded while the selling remains the same; the new normal is bringing a hybrid store culture more consistent as earlier either the companies who are dealing in offline stores don’t have the excitement for online and vice versa, but after pandemic people are adapting it as the need of the hour, gradually hybrid will become the permanent setup for all the big brands.During the retail space, visitors will be able to experience how Google products and services work together in a “variety of immersive ways,” more of which Google is going to share the exact date when the doors will open for the public.Google is having experts on hand to help visitors get the most out of their devices, such as troubleshooting an issue, fixing a banged device screen, or assisting customers with installations.Google’s official announcementJason Rosenthal, VP, Direct Channels & Membership, at Google, stated in announcing the launch: “It doesn’t imply whether you’re a long-time Pixel user, are curious about our Nest displays or want to engage in one of the how-to workshops we’ll offer during the year — our team will be able to provide you with help that’s specific and personalized to your needs.”Google has considered going into physical retail in the past, having piloted pop-up shops where people can browse new products when they’re first announced, and have also created mini experience concessions inside Best Buy stores.

Still, it has previously preferred to focus on its website for its merchandise or sold through regular retail channels to showcase its hardware and services beyond these small trials.Apple ConnectionFrom the sounds of it, this new space takes its playbook from Apple, which recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of opening its first retail store at Tysons Corner, Va. – with the opening of an interactive space where people can come in to try out Google products and get assistance from in-store experts.Such an arrival is not without its jeopardies, however.

Microsoft tried its hand with a series of flagships worldwide to showcase its products and services in an attempt to create an eco-system around its brand.

The mandatory norms and protocol of masks, hand sanitation, and social distancing will be there in the Google Store, and the guests inside will be limited, while pickup options availability will make the shopping experience better and customer-centric.The Google Store Chelsea will be part of Google’s urban campus in the Chelsea neighborhood, which is home to many of the technology giant’s 11,000+ Google NYC employees.
