Thanks to the emergence of technologies such as mobile personal assistants, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Cortana, and others, there’s no doubt that voice search is on the rise.

These days, consumers can send text messages while driving or use a mobile personal assistant to complete simple actions.

In fact, Gartner predicts that about 30% of searches will be conducted without a screen by 2020.

While optimizing content for voice search can seem daunting, there are a few easy tips that can help you start gaining more visibility for those types of queries.

We continue to see featured snippets more and more in search engine results pages (SERPs).

These SERP features show qualified results right on the SERP, which can lead to quicker answers to questions.

Consumer search behaviors are changing rapidly.

According to a recent report from BrightEdge (disclaimer: my employer), 57 percent of searches now begin with a mobile device, and last year Google revealed that voice search has increased to about 20 percent of all Google mobile search queries.

And of course, Google is constantly adjusting their SERP layout in order to better align with a searcher’s context and expectations.

Consumers now expect to see rich content in SERPs that includes not just standard text listings, but video, images, local map results, featured snippets and more.

The standard organic listings themselves also sometimes feature rich snippets, which enhance the listing by presenting information in a way that is easy to scan and often visually appealing.

Opinions expressed in this article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Marketing Land.

As we were promised earlier in the year, Sky has added voice search to its Sky Q service, and it comes with some fun extras for showing off when your friends come over.

The feature includes a set of movie quote Easter eggs, so you can search for particular films by doing your best impression of their most famous line.

"You had me at hello"

"Houston, we have a problem"

"You can't handle the truth!"

"Say hello to my little friend"

That’s about to change as Sky starts rolling out an update that’ll switch on your Q box’s voice search skills across all live and on-demand TV (although it might take a month or so to get to everyone).

It had already reached our box when we turned it on this morning and results are impressive.

But beyond saying the name of whatever it is you want to watch, what else can you do with it?

Hold down the button on the side of your remote and give one of these a go...

Selecting your evening’s viewing by quoting its most memorable line at your telly clearly isn’t the most efficient way of finding a film to watch, especially as most of them are hidden as easter eggs, but it’s a neat trick that you’ll be keen to show off to your mates for at least the first few weeks (or until they refuse to stop coming round).

You’ll need to get the quote word-for-word for it to work, so “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t say no to” won’t bring up The Godfather.

Whether it’s Siri, Cortana, Amazon Echo, Google, or another robot friend, there is no questioning the importance of voice search.

One of the key aspects of this is featured snippets, as these are the results which are read aloud in response to voice searches.

They are the direct answer results that appear at the top of the SERPs in a box, and they often include a link back to the source of the answer.

You could have the most mind-blowing and enticing meta description and title tags in the world, but if you’re not in that sought after position zero, then your lovingly crafted content will not be read aloud and will therefore remain both unseen and unheard by the searcher.

Of course the key difference between voice search and standard search is the use of more natural, conversational language.

This new style of search and query formats must be factored into your strategy.

Get into the Benefits of Voice Search Optimisation! What is Voice Search?Voice Search is the Google search that happens when a person speaks into their device and asks for information by using virtual voice assistants like Siri, Bixby or Alexa.

Where, so far, SEO practices have focused on the written word, now, sound – from both the provider of information and the searcher – is being transcribed into search terms. It’s a growing trend that people at home, work, or out driving, looking to make a purchase or enquiry, are increasingly using voice search.

They are often looking to find a store or supplier near their location, or to find out about topics they are interested in.With close to 2.5 billion smart phone users out there, you can see how there are advantages to be had by optimising your site to respond to voice searches.

Why is Voice Search important? While digital marketing allows you to target your niche customer base rather than using a ‘one size fits all’ approach, voice search brings that whole concept into even sharper relief.

Coupled with a best use of Google’s new ‘Local Search’ feature, optimising your site for Voice Search will literally serve to put you on the map.

With 46% of voice search users look for a local business daily, there’s a large market to be tapped into and it is increasing rapidly.

“What are the best hiking boots for men?” became “best hiking boots men.” “How many ounces are there in a pound?” became “number ounces pound.” Question words, articles, adjectives, or any such linguistical fanciness would confuse the humble algorithms.

Search engines can parse whole phrases, decipher intent, zero in on results that will delight the searcher.

Marketers need to adapt to the new search ecosystem.

This first trend is the newest on the list, but it seems poised to change the search landscape substantially in the future.

Google Lens is an app that can identify buildings, products, text, and read barcodes – and it uses machine learning, meaning it’s going to get more sophisticated over time.

The technology isn’t perfect yet, but it should be on every marketer’s radar.

It may have initially been dismissed as a gimmick, a fad doomed to go the same way as 3D televisions, robot vacuum cleaners and having disposable income, but voice search looks like it might actually hang around for a wee while.

A billion voice searches a month.

For those whose knowledge of stammering goes little further than The King’s Speech, the condition isn’t altogether uncommon in children as their language skills develop.

I’ve had a stammer since I was seven or eight years old so it’s something I’ve had to learn to manage and deal with just about every time I open my mouth.

I have an Amazon Echo Dot sat in my kitchen and while I don’t use it to play hide and seek with the kids or whatever other nonsense the TV advert suggests we do, I bloody love using it to set timers so I don’t burn dinner.

Bringing it to life with ‘Alexa…’ rarely proves an issue as the letter ‘A’ isn’t one that I regularly stammer over — yes, it's common to struggle with some letters and sounds more than others — but then I only have a few seconds to speak the rest of the command before it switches off.

In a move seemingly designed to combat the threat of Amazon in the Grocery and Home Shopping space, Walmart announced yesterday (23 August) that they’re partnering with Google to power the Google Express service available via Google Home.

While it potentially secures the fulfilment of orders to the growing numbers of people using voice search to purchase, it throws up interesting questions about the approach of brands to being ready for the era of the digital personal assistant.

As we hurtle towards a post-GDPR world where first party data is critical to informing all elements of a brand’s interaction with customers and prospective customers, surrendering control of the experience by powering a service rather than focusing on integrating the functionality into your own seems like a missed opportunity.

Indeed, depending on the uptake of voice search, which ComScore estimates suggest will power more than 50% of searches by 2020, surrendering the interface of some of your shoppers to a third party may cause damage in the longer term.

You miss the traffic insight, lose control of the customer experience and commercially risk getting squeezed and put into a price war with other providers powering the same service (including Target and Costco).

In short, many of the issues that brands have who retail via Amazon, for example.
