Consumers were expected to spend more than US$11 billion on virtual reality VR technology over the next few years, with some clear winners, a data analysis company said.

IHS Markit said in a report that users were expected to spend as much as US$7.9 billion on VR headsets and US$3.3 billion on VR entertainment by 2020, jumping from the US$1.6 billion IHS expected consumers to spend on headsets and US$310 million on entertainment in 2016.

As spending grows, IHS analysts predicted that the VR market would divide into two camps: makers of low volume, high-end VR headsets, such as Facebook s Oculus Rift, and makers of high volume, low-end VR headsets that use smartphones for their displays.

The smartphone VR headsets are expected to give the overall market a boost because of their large addressable user base for VR content and cheaper pricing.

Two years earlier, the tech giant had unveiled its inexpensive, do-it-yourself VR headset called Google Cardboard.

Despite there not being a huge number of people buying the Gear VR or other VR headsets at this point, Samsung didn t have an issue selling out of the device early on.

It appears that Samsung does have a second version of the Gear VR that it is testing.

Import tracking site Zauba has a listing that shows a quartet of Gear VR headsets have been imported into India for testing.

Four Gear VR headsets carrying model number SM-R323 were imported into India on July 4.

If you don t recall, the model number of the original Gear VR headset was R322.

A universal cable standard for virtual reality devices can’t truly be “universal” without the participation of all the major makers of VR hardware.

That vision is coming closer to reality, as HTC Vive has announced that it’s joining a group focused on bringing USB-C connectors to all future VR headsets.

Back in July, an organization called the VirtualLink Consortium brought together AMD, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oculus, and Valve to develop a USB-C connector cable suitable for future VR headsets.

Because VR headsets often contain multiple high-resolution screens, cameras, sensors, and microphones, users typically connect two or three plugs and/or cables.

Using an “alternate mode” of USB-C, VirtualLink wants to cut that to a single cord that supports up to four lanes of HBR3 DisplayPort, 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 for cameras and sensors, and 27 watts of power.

There are multiple advantages to reducing the complexity and number of VR cords.
