Today, Chinese manufacturing giant, Huawei, commenced its annual developer conference.

We already knew that Huawei has its own OS and we have heard names like HongMeng OS, Ark OS, Oak OS, etc.

However, when the company announced the system, it came with the name “Harmony OS”.

Speculations did not capture this name and Huawei’s CEO has explained the reason behind the name.

“HongMeng’s meaning in Chinese is something close to “opening the earth”.

The closest English word is Genesis which loosely mean “beginning”.

For months, rumors have circulated that Chinese tech giant Huawei was hard at work on a homegrown operating system, an increasingly necessary step toward independence after US sanctions prompted Google to sever ties.

It’s true that HarmonyOS has been built with that breadth of applications in mind.

The open-source platform is destined for smart TVs, smartwatches, and a bevy of Internet of Things doodads.

(The kernel is the core of an operating system, the hands that make the marionette dance.

Huawei touts HarmonyOS as having a “Deterministic Latency Engine,” a fancy way of saying that it can better prioritize resources when apps and functions compete over them.

While smartphones weren’t the primary focus of Huawei’s announcement, they’re clearly top of mind.

The software platform took centerstage at Huawei’s developer conference in China, where we learned it’s designed to offer a unified and cohesive experience across a variety of devices including tablets, wearables, computers, cars, smart screens, and other smart devices; but crucially it won’t be coming to smartphones — yet.

But work on the OS stretches back even further than that, with development having started two years ago, according to the company.

“We’re entering a day and age where people expect a holistic intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios”, said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group.

“To support this, we felt it was important to have an operating system with improved cross-platform capabilities.

We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.”

For key aspects, not for phones yet

The Volkswagen ID R electric race car is already pretty darn accomplished.

Not only did it break the overall record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, the automaker picked up the EV record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife just before that.

This time, the electric race car will head to China's Tianmen Mountain, where it will snake its way up Big Gate Road, which has 99 different hairpin turns as it ascends towards Heaven's Gate.

There's a lot of Chinese symbolism baked into this road, which is why VW gave the ID R a new look for its latest attempt.

Chinese media, meanwhile, claims that Huawei plans on stuffing the OS in a phone due to launch later this year.

Anonymous sources told Global Times that the phones will be priced at around $288 for low and medium-end markets and will ship in their millions, along with the Huawei Mate 30 series, in the fourth quarter.

Huawei's UK PR was unable to provide any details on licensing or availability.

The OS, also known as Hongmeng, has been compared to Google's Fuchsia – which is also microkernel-based – and promises developers the ability to write once, run anywhere.

Speaking today at the Huawei Developer Conference in Songshan Lake, China, CEO Richard Yu spoke of a multi-device IDE, multi-language unified compilation, and a distributed architecture kit.

The software will first appear in smart screen devices and will eventually be available on wearables and in-car systems too.

The debut comes as President Trump said the US will cut its ties with Huawei.

A new podcast network is launching today with a focus on influencer-hosted shows and sports content that it thinks will have international appeal.

HiStudios, a company spun out of the startup Himalaya, has already inked deals with a variety of creators, including NBA player James Harden and boxer Mike Tyson, setting it up to compete with all the other networks also hunting for new podcast talent.

“Ultimately, [influencers have] just really rabid fan bases,” Peter Vincer, HiStudios CEO, tells me.

With some creators, it’s paying for outside production, like in the Studio71 arrangement, while others involve creators using HiStudios’ own producers, editors, and soon-to-be-opened studios.

Vincer says that while audio is the big focus, the team isn’t limiting itself to the medium.

This is relevant if it continues to pursue partnerships with prominent YouTubers who publish their podcasts as both video and audio products.

The long-rumored HongMeng system has finally here.

However, this system came with the name Harmony OS.

Nevertheless, it appears that the Harmony OS will still use the HongMeng name in China.

For this system, Huawei is confident in its performance because the company wants to build a platform-wide ecosystem.

Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, believes that migration from Android to Harmony OS is very convenient.

Harmony OS is based on a microkernel.

The report found schools providing interns to work night shifts at a Hengyang Foxconn plant, producing Amazon devices.

According to the report, kids who declined compulsory overtime were told by their teachers that it would affect their graduation from school.

Foxconn - which also assembles components for Apple devices, among others - peak period begins in July.

The report claimed it has hired 1,581 pupils from local technical colleges and is looking for more.

The pupils are said to be paid $248 a month to work 10 hours a day, six days a week.

Teachers, who get a $425 bonus from Foxconn, work with factory managers to pressure the pupils into working overtime and night shifts.
