Huawei has announced its first HarmonyOS-powered devices: a pair of smart TVs called the Honor Vision and Honor Vision Pro, which will go on sale in China next week, reports Gadgets360.

Announced yesterday, HarmonyOS is Huawei’s big attempt to decrease its reliance on Google’s Android operating system.

Since Google suspended Huawei’s Android license back in May, the company has been open about its plans to develop an alternative operating system, although it says that HarmonyOS has been in development for over two years.

Eventually, HarmonyOS will run on everything from wearables to PCs and tablets, but for now Huawei says its focus is on “smart screens” like this.

Although the company has indicated that the OS is ready to run on phones, it has said that it plans to continue using Android for its own smartphones for the time being.

In terms of hardware, the TVs include Huawei’s Honghu 818 chipset, an octa-core processor which will process the images seen on screen.

Have you kept up with this week’s smartphone news?

IDC reported last week that smartphone sales fell by 3.6% (to 331.2 million units) in Q2 and that global shipments declined for the seventh successive quarter.

The mining required to extract aluminum, cobalt, copper, gold, palladium, platinum, silver, tantalum, tin, tungsten and other metals is extremely resource-intensive.

The overly rapid adoption of new phones and insufficient reuse of used phones lead to incredible waste, resulting in toxic metals in landfills, microplastic in the ocean and dangerous disassembly for recycled phones, often by children.

What’s driving the decline in smartphone shipments and manufacturing is good news: People are hanging on to their smartphones longer.

The average length of time iPhone users are holding on to their phones before upgrading, for example, has moved from three years to four, according to one analyst.

Xiaomi’s extensive lineup of budget smartphones is soon going to get a new member with the Mi A3.

Come 2019, we have the all-new Mi A3 ready to make its way to India.

For the uninitiated, the Mi A3 is a rebranded Mi CC9e that was unveiled in China recently.

In July, a 17-year-old high school student in China was sticking protective film over 3,000 Amazon Echo dots a day at the Foxconn factory in Hengyang.

“I tried telling the manager of my line that I didn’t want to work overtime,” the student, who went by the pseudonym Xiao Fang, told anonymous researchers who leaked their findings and transcripts of interviews with workers to Chinese Labor Watch.

“But the manager notified my teacher and the teacher said if I didn’t work overtime, I could not intern at Foxconn and that would affect my graduation and scholarship applications at the school.

I had no choice, I could only endure this.”

The China Labor Watch report, published on Thursday, covers a 2019 investigation into the Foxconn Hengang factory and the Guardian was allowed to review the underlying documents.

Among the report’s findings was the claim that high school students ages 16 through 18 across a number of schools were recruited to work at the factory, and teachers were tasked with pressuring the teens into working overtime or night shifts.

NASA's Aqua satellite provided infrared and visible views of Typhoon Lekima as it was approaching landfall in China.

On Aug. 9 at 12:41 a.m. EDT (441 UTC) the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite analyzed Lekima's cloud top temperatures in infrared light.

The stronger the storms, the higher they extend into the troposphere, and they have the colder cloud temperatures.

AIRS found coldest cloud top temperatures as cold as or colder than minus 63 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 53 degrees Celsius) around the eye and in thick bands of thunderstorms wrapping into the center from the north and southeast.

On Aug 9 at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 UTC), the Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that also flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite provided visible views of powerful Typhoon Lekima affecting China.

The satellite showed a clear, small, rounded eye surrounded by a thick, powerful ring of thunderstorms and a large band of thunderstorms extending north of the center.

Instead, the company pointed us to tweets from Twitter's official corporate communications account that announced after "multiple appeals from affected users" the video in question would once again be visible, but bearing a "sensitive media interstitial."

As of Friday morning, the tweet containing the controversial video appears on McConnell's campaign account and full access to the account has been reinstated, a Twitter spokesperson said.

Today, Chinese manufacturing giant, Huawei, commenced its annual developer conference.

We already knew that Huawei has its own OS and we have heard names like HongMeng OS, Ark OS, Oak OS, etc.

However, when the company announced the system, it came with the name “Harmony OS”.

Speculations did not capture this name and Huawei’s CEO has explained the reason behind the name.

“HongMeng’s meaning in Chinese is something close to “opening the earth”.

The closest English word is Genesis which loosely mean “beginning”.

For months, rumors have circulated that Chinese tech giant Huawei was hard at work on a homegrown operating system, an increasingly necessary step toward independence after US sanctions prompted Google to sever ties.

It’s true that HarmonyOS has been built with that breadth of applications in mind.

The open-source platform is destined for smart TVs, smartwatches, and a bevy of Internet of Things doodads.

(The kernel is the core of an operating system, the hands that make the marionette dance.

Huawei touts HarmonyOS as having a “Deterministic Latency Engine,” a fancy way of saying that it can better prioritize resources when apps and functions compete over them.

While smartphones weren’t the primary focus of Huawei’s announcement, they’re clearly top of mind.

The software platform took centerstage at Huawei’s developer conference in China, where we learned it’s designed to offer a unified and cohesive experience across a variety of devices including tablets, wearables, computers, cars, smart screens, and other smart devices; but crucially it won’t be coming to smartphones — yet.

But work on the OS stretches back even further than that, with development having started two years ago, according to the company.

“We’re entering a day and age where people expect a holistic intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios”, said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group.

“To support this, we felt it was important to have an operating system with improved cross-platform capabilities.

We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.”

The Volkswagen ID R electric race car is already pretty darn accomplished.

Not only did it break the overall record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, the automaker picked up the EV record at the NĂźrburgring Nordschleife just before that.

The ID R isn't done yet, though, and now its sights are set on China.

VW on Friday unveiled a new livery for the ID R ahead of yet another blast down a wild and twisty road.

This time, the electric race car will head to China's Tianmen Mountain, where it will snake its way up Big Gate Road, which has 99 different hairpin turns as it ascends towards Heaven's Gate.

There's a lot of Chinese symbolism baked into this road, which is why VW gave the ID R a new look for its latest attempt.

Chinese media, meanwhile, claims that Huawei plans on stuffing the OS in a phone due to launch later this year.

Anonymous sources told Global Times that the phones will be priced at around $288 for low and medium-end markets and will ship in their millions, along with the Huawei Mate 30 series, in the fourth quarter.

Then we'll do it Huawei – and roll our own mobile operating system

Huawei's UK PR was unable to provide any details on licensing or availability.

The OS, also known as Hongmeng, has been compared to Google's Fuchsia – which is also microkernel-based – and promises developers the ability to write once, run anywhere.

Speaking today at the Huawei Developer Conference in Songshan Lake, China, CEO Richard Yu spoke of a multi-device IDE, multi-language unified compilation, and a distributed architecture kit.

The software will first appear in smart screen devices and will eventually be available on wearables and in-car systems too.

The debut comes as President Trump said the US will cut its ties with Huawei.

On Friday, Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled its new HarmonyOS software— an operating system for its upcoming electronic devices.

The launch comes as Huawei remains on a blacklist that prevents it from working with American software giants like Google.

In the wake of Huawei's announcement, President Trump said on Friday that the United States will cut its ties with the Chinese tech behemoth.

The move comes just after China had stopped purchasing American agricultural products, a response to the Trump administration's latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports.

A new podcast network is launching today with a focus on influencer-hosted shows and sports content that it thinks will have international appeal.

HiStudios, a company spun out of the startup Himalaya, has already inked deals with a variety of creators, including NBA player James Harden and boxer Mike Tyson, setting it up to compete with all the other networks also hunting for new podcast talent.

“Ultimately, [influencers have] just really rabid fan bases,” Peter Vincer, HiStudios CEO, tells me.

With some creators, it’s paying for outside production, like in the Studio71 arrangement, while others involve creators using HiStudios’ own producers, editors, and soon-to-be-opened studios.

Vincer says that while audio is the big focus, the team isn’t limiting itself to the medium.

This is relevant if it continues to pursue partnerships with prominent YouTubers who publish their podcasts as both video and audio products.

However, this system came with the name Harmony OS.

Nevertheless, it appears that the Harmony OS will still use the HongMeng name in China.

For this system, Huawei is confident in its performance because the company wants to build a platform-wide ecosystem.

Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, believes that migration from Android to Harmony OS is very convenient.
