The newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is the latest top-of-the-line flagship handset in the Note family.

It has lots of high-end features, including a huge screen, plenty of RAM and onboard storage, an embedded stylus, and much more.

Let’s compare the specs and price of the Note 10 Plus with the Apple iPhone XS Max.

The Galaxy Note 10 Plus is almost as large as the Galaxy S10 5G, which was first released just a few months ago in May 2019.

The screen itself is a huge 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O display with 498ppi and a resolution of 3,040 x 1,440.

The Note 10 Plus’ other hardware features include an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, an IP68 rating, and a way to access Samsung’s digital assistant Bixby directly from its power button.

Let’s assume that every company that decided to move forward with this plan, did so to benefit the consumer.

Could it be time that we stop treating the smartphone like a one-stop shop?

This week Samsung revealed one of their two big smartphones of the year: the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.

Earlier this year they released the Galaxy S10, and it still had a headphone jack.

At this point, we’ve learned that no single company will truly give away the entire reason that they decided their newest phone will have no headphone jack.

They’ve all got interesting reasons, of that you can be sure.

Apple and Samsung may have taken over the high-end market with the latest release of their flagship models (iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy S10), but the Moto G series is the midrange market’s gamechanger.

Catch the Motorolla Moto G6 at its most affordable price yet with Amazon’s 42% price cut.

Whether you’re buying a phone for your kiddo, or just finding cost-saving alternatives, Motorola’s Moto G6 is a competent budget-friendly smartphone with acceptable performance, decent power, and capable cameras.

It may not be lauded for its durability but a Moto G6 case may just be the extra layer of protection it needs.

Compared to its previous generations and other phones within its class, the G6 proves to be visually appealing with relatively small bezels, a fingerprint sensor right below its screen, and a beautiful curved glass back.

Its 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen flaunts a 18:9 aspect ratio along with a 2,160 x 1,080 pixel resolution that makes for vibrant picture quality with vivid colors and pleasant tones.

We’ve got you covered with our Samsung Game Launcher guide.

If you’re still not seeing the app, you can visit Settings > Advanced features > Game Launcher and toggle the switch to enable it on your device.

Then tap the three-dot/settings menu in the top-right corner and choose add apps.

Visit Settings > Sort games, and you’ll find the ability to sort titles alphabetically or by date of installation (newest first).

Otherwise, you’ll find that the Game Launcher main menu is pretty self-explanatory, featuring the aforementioned list of games, a rotating carousel of ads near the bottom, and two buttons below that.

Tweak the slider to the left and your phone will prioritize power efficiency over performance when gaming, but tweaking the slider to the right will focus on performance.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella didn’t say anything significant at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked this week.

The CEO of a $1 trillion company showing up to your event is enough to make a statement.

And the statement is that Microsoft and Samsung are strengthening their partnership in a variety of areas, including to bring Android and Windows closer.

Before Nadella hit the stage, Shilpa Ranganathan, general manager of Microsoft’s mobile experiences group, video-conferenced in to show off some of the integrations.

That’s certainly noteworthy, but nowhere near as useful as the existing functionality — letting you access your text messages, photos, and notifications right on your PC.

Your Phone is still limited to select phones running Android 7.0 or greater.

The Note 10 Plus, for example, is the company's first "plus" version of its Galaxy Note phone, and the Note 10 5G is Samsung's second 5G phone, after the Galaxy S10 5G.

In addition to the bigger size and next-gen network capabilities, the Note 10s come in an array of new colors and are equipped with updated camera and video editing tools, like AR Doodle.

But there are several other things we didn't get from the Note 10, too -- either specs that were dropped from the previous model or features we anticipated because of the active rumor mill that swirled around the phone before it launched.

The familiar audio port began disappearing in 2016 when Lenovo/Motorola and Apple lopped it off their phones.

But for others adamant about holding onto their wired headphones, there are still some phones available to accommodate that, including Samsung's own Galaxy S10 line.

Note 10 bids farewell to microSD

Samsung was one of the earliest adopters of virtual reality technology, launching its Gear VR headset back in 2015.

The headset allows you to slot a Samsung flagship into it, with the phone providing the screen and horsepower.

Unfortunately, Samsung confirmed to The Verge that the brand-new Galaxy Note 10 series doesn’t support the Gear VR.

It’s unclear whether the manufacturer will eventually provide an adapter to ensure that the two devices are compatible with each other.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series was indeed compatible with the VR headset, with the peripheral including the required adapter in the box.

But we haven’t seen a new headset since 2017’s model.

As smartphone prices go up, users are moving to three-year replacement cycles, so buying a 4G phone in late 2019 means getting stuck on the old standard through late 2022 — well past the major carriers’ 2020 commitments for offering national 5G service.

Back in February, Samsung made a weak play for my early 5G smartphone dollars by announcing the Galaxy S10 5G.

Now it’s somehow making an even worse pitch with the Galaxy Note10, which is being released in multiple versions that will actually exacerbate the confusion over 5G standards.

Let’s put aside the fact that there are actually two 5G Note10 models — the Note10 5G, and Note10+ 5G — with the former version exclusive to South Korea, and the latter apparently arriving everywhere else.

I’ll also look past the fact that Samsung will sell the smaller version for $1,049 versus the large model’s princely $1,299, a price I and the vast majority of customers wouldn’t even consider paying for a phone.

The real confusion begins with Samsung’s decision to release versions of the Galaxy Note10+ that will only support non-millimeter wave 5G networks.

Unlike the Galaxy S10 launch more than half a year ago, Samsung’s Unpacked 2019 almost felt muted and surrounded with mixed reactions.

It may have been Samsung’s most controversial Galaxy Note announcement in quite a while.

Some love the new features but others deplore what Samsung removed in turn.

Naturally, that raises questions among buyers whether they should go for the Galaxy Note 10 or the Galaxy Note 10+ or if they should opt for something else to spend their hard-earned money on.

Granted, the Snapdragon 855 might be a bit of a disappointment since the 855+ has already been announced but it will still be on par with almost all 2019 premium phones.

The Galaxy Note pushes the cameras to three, four on the Galaxy Note 10+ because of the “DepthVision” 3D time-of-flight sensor.

Samsung likes to release a lot of devices, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised the Note series now comes in two sizes: The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

It’s an impressive smartphone by any measure, with a price to match, and it mostly delivers on the features and tweaks I wanted to see, but there are disappointments too.

I like the new look

Hold the Note 10 Plus side by side with last year’s Note 9 and it’s immediately obvious which is newer.

The refined curves, the almost entirely screen front, marred only by the hole-punch camera, and that stunning Aura Glow finish are eye-catching updates.

Samsung also had the good sense to kill the Bixby button and the fingerprint sensor is now assimilated into the stunning display.

Samsung’s just-announced Galaxy Note 10 is not compatible with Gear VR, the company’s virtual reality headset that works only with a phone slotted in front of the lenses, according to a tweet from tech analyst Anshel Sag.

The decision to shut off support for its headset on its newest flagship phones casts doubt on the future of both the Gear VR and phone-based headsets, as standalone devices with built-in displays like the Oculus Go are on the rise.

Samsung didn’t mention Gear VR during today’s Unpacked event, and it hasn’t updated the headset since 2017.

The most recent phones to support it were all four of the Galaxy S10 phone models announced in February, but only via an adapter.

(The same was true of last year’s Galaxy Note 9.)

The Gear VR still has a product page on Samsung’s store, but it doesn’t seem to be available for purchase anymore.

The latest to be introduced is Samsung’s impressively sized and equipped Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

The Note 10 Plus, with its 6.8-inch display, may boast the largest screen currently available in the US market.

(It is outmatched by at least one non-US phone, the Huawei Honor Note 10, with a 6.95-inch display.)

Although the Note 10 Plus measures 6.39 x 3.04 x 0.31 inches, Samsung’s own Galaxy S10 5G (which has a 6.7-inch display) beats it by a hair at 6.40 x 3.04 x 0.31 inches.

And although the Pixel 3 XL isn’t all that much smaller at 6.22 x 3.02 x 0.31 inches, its display is a relatively modest 6.3 inches.

Other alternatives in the “bigger is better” sweepstakes include Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Plus (6.4-inch display), the OnePlus 7 Pro (6.7-inch display), and Apple’s iPhone XS Max (6.5-inch display).

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is, by no means, a small phone.

Its 6.3-inch AMOLED screen is just a few millimeters smaller than the iPhone XS Max’s display.

But, as Dieter Bohn noted in his hands-on impressions post, the Note 10 is something different for Samsung.

While the Note 10 Plus feels more like the true Note 9 successor, the Note 10 has a similar feel in the hand to smaller phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the iPhone XS.

So it’s worth comparing to other smaller flagship phones that you might also be considering.

There’s a lot that sets the Note 10 apart from those other devices.
