Over the years, Google has been improving search results to give users less reason to navigate away from Google just to find simple answers to their questions.

Those range from snippets presented in answer boxes to even video clip previews.

On Android, it may even present more information or more controls that remove the need to switch an app.

Now Google is doing the same for podcasts by letting users not only search for relevant podcasts but even start listening to them right then and there within the search results page.

Google’s podcast-centric announcement actually has two levels.

The most immediately visible feature for users is the ability to start playing podcast episodes within search results, be it on the browser or on mobile.

Over the span of Google Search’s decades-long lifetime, new and convenient features have been constantly implemented to help provide more immediate information and links for popular search types, and now the tech giant is giving that same treatment to podcasts.

Announced today on the Google blog, users searching for a podcast via Google will notice an extra section show up among their regular search results, displaying a carousel of individual podcast episodes that are available online.

The function works when using search phrases such as “podcasts about space”, or “true crime podcasts”, and Google claims that “soon, you won’t necessarily need the term ‘podcast’ in your search to see episodes”.

If you’re wondering how Google is able to find these episodes – even if the title isn’t necessarily part of the search terms – it’s because the results are “based on Google’s understanding of what’s being talked about”.

As reported by Android Police earlier in the year, the company had begun transcribing podcasts found on its native Google Podcasts service, in the hope that the metadata will be useful for search results.

Today, we’re likely seeing the results of this.

If your Google search results are seeming a bit stale today, you're not alone.

Google announced early Thursday morning that it was experiencing indexing issues on its search service, which affects new content from appearing in search results.

Similar indexing issues plagued the search giant earlier this year, as one in particular in April lasted for nearly an entire week.

Google said the issue impacted "some sites," though it did specify further on the scale of the problem.

At the time of writing this article, searching the name of major publications like the Washington Post and New York Times in Google News, the freshest articles returned are at least four hours old.

Some, on the first page of results, are from the prior day.

Google has made it clear that it is going all-in on podcasts not only as an entertainment medium but also as a source for information.

As part of that ambition, the company announced today that you can now find — and listen to — podcasts episodes right in your Google Search results.

Similarly to how video, news, and image results appear in a separate area after conducting certain Search queries, so will podcast episodes.

The feature is live right now on the web version of Search for users in the United States searching for topics using the English language.

Eventually, you’ll also be able to find and listen to podcasts using Google Assistant.

However, this functionality isn’t present yet.

Google is taking the next step in making podcasts easier to find.

The company will now surface individual podcast episodes in search results, so if someone searches for a show about a niche topic or an interview with a specific person, Google will show them potential podcast episodes that fit their query.

The company will also soon allow people to ask Google Assistant to play podcasts about specific topics, and it’ll find episodes to play.

For now, people have to search using the word “podcast,” so if you want to find a show that talks about golden retrievers, you’ll have to search “podcasts about golden retrievers” or “golden retriever podcast.” Once you choose one to listen to, it’ll open in Google Podcasts’ web app.

The same command structure applies to Google Assistant, so users will have to say, “Hey Google, play a podcast about golden retrievers.”

Eventually, Google says it’ll support third-party playback, which is important for podcasts that are exclusive to certain platforms.

Google is making it easier to find and listen to audio content specific to your search interests, with playable episodes surfaced in results that start rolling out today.

Playable podcasts will show up in results when you use “podcasts” as a keyword in your search, in combination with other terms.

It’s intended to deliver relevant results freed from the confines of a dedicated podcast player, and Google also intends to extend this search feature to queries that don’t even specify “podcast” as it refines its algorithms.

Google is also going to be rolling out this inline playable results feature for the search function in Google Podcasts on the web, and for Google Assistant.

If you’re logged in, it’ll also sync your results so you can pick up from wherever you left off in the dedicated Google Podcasts app.

This should be good for discoverability, since it means that a much broader potential audience can stumble across your podcasts than would be possible with existing tools, and sample them on the spot.
