This morning, The Verge published a story about how Citizen — an app that appears to encourage vigilante justice — encouraged its users to hunt down the wrong person and presumably bring them to justice, in the mistaken assumption that person had started the 1,158-acre Palisades wildfire in Los Angeles last week. The company offered a $30,000 bounty.

Now, we’re learning the same company is apparently planning to offer its own private security forces to users, according to a new report from Motherboard.

In fact, one Citizen-branded patrol car has already been spotted in the wild:

They are held at financial institutions, called brokerages or broker-dealers, whose professionals are licensed to do the actual trading of the assets, under the investor's direction. The broker is then responsible for executing an investor's orders. The client receives notices of transactions, and monthly statements — either paper, or, increasingly, electronically. Brokerages typically charge annual fees to service and maintain your account. Meaning, it doesn't apply to losses if your investments perform poorly — you losing money because they've dropped in price or value. Withdrawals are often strictly limited until the investor reaches a certain age.

As Facebook battles mounting regulatory pressure, one of the most powerful judges in the country is facing renewed scrutiny over his ties to the company. On July 24th, a coalition of nine progressive groups, including Demand Justice, Freedom From Facebook and Google, and Accountable Tech, released a statement calling on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to recuse himself from a case involving Facebook due to his close friendship with the company’s vice president of public policy, Joel Kaplan.

The case in question — a lawsuit brought by non-Facebook user Noah Duguid that argues Facebook violated anti-robocall rules by sending out unsolicited text messages — is minor in terms of platform regulation. But Kavanaugh’s decision here could...

Aereo wanted to take local, over-the-air broadcasts from major networks, and redistribute them over the internet for a buck a day, or $80 a year.

It was a pretty cool idea, except that Aereo and Diller never actually got permission from the broadcasters to do it.

That small detail ended up costing the company dearly as it was dragged through the legal system all the way up to the Supreme Court — which ultimately ruled that Aereo had illegally violated the broadcasters’ copyrights.

Now it seems a similar enterprise called Locast — also an NYC operation — is about to face the same difficulties.

Locast is being sued by all four major broadcasters, according to Reuters.

There are a few differences this time around, however.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm gathered over 200 folk fairy tales for their famous collection, but for the most part, we tend to focus on a select few – like Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Rumpelstiltskin.

Much of that is thanks to Disney, which turned the tales of characters like Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and the Frog Prince into renowned animated stories.

The Story of a Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear

Synopsis: There’s a young man whose father just can’t stand him because he has no job prospects, so he’s asked to go out and learn a skill.

Then, the boy is told to spend the night underneath a hanging tree with seven dangling corpses.

There’s just one caveat: the daughter has this weird thing where suitors have to promise that whoever dies first, the spouse gets buried alive with them.

In one of his first public speaking appearances since joining Facebook to lead its AI initiatives, VP Jérôme Pesenti expressed his concern about the growing use of compute power necessary to create powerful AI systems.

“The peak compute for companies like Facebook and Google can afford for an experiment, we are reaching that already.”

More software innovation will be required for artificial intelligence to grow without being hindered, he said, and optimization of hardware and software rather than brute force compute may be critical to AI in years ahead.

Examples of systems less reliant on compute for innovative breakthroughs include Pluribus, an AI system developed by Facebook AI Research and Carnegie Mellon University, introduced today, that can take on world-class poker players.

The end of Moore’s Law means the compute necessary to create the most advanced AI is going up.

“We still see gains with increase of compute, but the pressure from the problem is just going to become bigger,” Pesenti said.

I got a chance to taste the last bottle of Reuse Brew -- a beer made with Berlin wastewater and lots of high tech equipment to clean it.

I'm in Berlin for the IFA tech show this week and I had just toured one of the city's wastewater facilities.

This particular wastewater plant partnered with a water technology company called Xylem to make Reuse Brew as part of a special project to raise public awareness and public interest in recycled water.

Another machine uses specialized carbon filters that supposedly eliminate 99.999% of all pollutants and chemicals.

It was a malty brown ale with nicely balanced hops and carbonation.

"Water is probably the most important ingredient in a supply chain for a city."

Apple’s Eddy Cue, who’s been heading up the company’s streaming efforts, has been making the rounds in the media over the last couple of days, providing glimpses into what we can expect from its TV offerings.

In his latest interview with GQ Britain, Cue pushed back on reports that Apple was taking a heavy-handed approach to the TV shows that it would eventually air, saying the company hasn’t provided script notes to producers.

Last September, The Wall Street Journal published a report about Apple’s foray into TV streaming, highlighting that executives were unhappy with one early project, Vital Signs, based on the life of Dr. Dre.

CEO Tim Cook reportedly said that the series was too violent and that the company wouldn’t be able to stream it.

There have been other hints of division between Apple and show creators.

Bryan Fuller, who was the showrunner for Amazing Stories reboot, reportedly left over creative differences.

2017’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands sent players to Bolivia, where they were tasked with dismantling and destroying a drug cartel on its own turf.

Aurora is also home to Skell Technology, a Silicon Valley-like corporation focused on building autonomous drones to do good deeds, like heal the sick and end hunger.

The Ghost Recon series may not have as high a profile as Rainbow Six: Siege, which the publisher said had over 35 million players in June.

But Ghost Recon: Wildlands remains a key part of its online lineup, as it gives players a different set of environmental and tactical challenges than in Rainbow Six.

Of course, in the wrong hands, Skell’s ambitious tech could also be weaponized for the absolute worst reasons.

In Breakpoint, however, he’s the antagonist, an evil-doer who’s recruited other rogue Ghosts to join his misguided, drone-reprogramming cause.
