Robotic arms can move fast enough to snatch thrown objects right out of the air… but should they?

Not unless you want them to unnerve the humans they’re interacting with, according to work out of Disney Research.

Roboticists there found that slowing a robot’s reaction time made it feel more normal to people.

Disney has, of course, been interested in robotics for decades, and the automatons in its theme parks are among the most famous robots in the world.

But there are few opportunities for those robots to interact directly with people.

Hence a series of research projects at its research division aimed at safe and non-weird robot-human coexistence.

What is the weight of a young black man's gaze?

In Amofah's sustained looking, in the stunted, human gestures of his youth, we hear color and see sound: the echo in his eyes, the shout of his brown skin.

Silence eats at the photo but never wholly devours it.

It was no secret that Etika struggled with mental illness, and recently his behavior had become more worrisome to friends and fans.

A number of comments in the course of the last year often put him at odds with his devoted following, which he'd named the JoyCon Boyz (a winking reference to the Nintendo Switch controller).

Allusions to suicide, on his YouTube channel and in Reddit forums, had previously sparked concern as well.

(University of Leeds) A study involving virtual rather than real patients was as effective as traditional clinical trials in evaluating a medical device used to treat brain aneurysms, according to new research. The findings are proof of concept for what are called in-silico trials, where instead of recruiting people to a real-life clinical trial, researchers build digital simulations of patient groups, loosely akin to the way virtual populations are built in The Sims computer game.

Yahoo Groups, like much of Yahoo, are a relic of a previous internet age.

Although they aren’t widely used now, groups once served as a watering hole for discussion on wonderfully niche interests, such as TV show fan communities and extremely geeky computing topics — almost like Reddit does now.

Looking through the directory today, you can still find groups with thousands of members, and some groups have been active as recently as this year.

Sadly, it seems that almost all of that internet history is going to be erased.

In a support document, Yahoo says that, effective December 14th, it will be deleting all content that has been posted to Yahoo Groups.

And it’s going to largely shut down the service even sooner, as you won’t be able to upload new content to your groups starting this Monday, October 21st.

Tesla needs to focus exclusively on execution for the next eight months.

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it's time to take that business to market, the startup exits "stealth" mode and reveals what it's been up to.

Stealth mode can obviously be a stressful time, but it can also be a pleasant episode in which the startup has that most desirable of commodities: time.

If you’re hoping to turn a dollar on that extremely explicit hentai you picked up in college, you won’t be selling it on eBay. As first noticed by Adult Video News, eBay is banning the sale of most sexually explicit materials starting June 15, 2021.

Everyone has a different definition of what constitutes “sexually explicit” and eBay’s is extremely PG. While the policy is confusing in that it appears to conflate nudity and sexually explicit content, it carefully defines nudity as “showing any part of male or female genitalia, anus, or female breasts where the areola or nipple is visible.” It goes on to say that those same bits don’t get a pass if they’re covered by see-through material or confined by tight clothing. The policy also...

Facebook detailed another round of removals of pages, groups and accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior, this time covering four separate, unconnected operations originating in Thailand, Russia, Ukraine and Honduras.

They covered issues including Thai politics, U.S.-China relations, Hong Kong protests and criticism of democracy activists in Thailand.

According to Gleicher, about 38,000 accounts followed one or more of these pages, and less than $18,000 was spent on Facebook ads, paid for in U.S. dollars.

The new Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is the latest in the series for Nintendo Switch, bringing a few new players and a ton of new levels.

The game was easy to get used to and an absolute blast to play, and for just $45, definitely worth buying for any Nintendo Switch owner.

Just like many Mario games that came before it, Super Mario Bros. U is a side-scrolling platformer game so you run or jump over platforms and obstacles to get through each level.

The colors and animation can make it look a little cartoonish, but we'd actually expect nothing less from a Mario game and it captures the historic brand's aesthetic perfectly.

Once you fire it up, you'll be able to select your preferred character and the number of players that are playing — which can go up to four.

It's pretty much the same story — Mario and the gang are enjoying a meal at Peach's castle, Bowser shows up and throws everyone but Peach away, and you have to make your way back towards Peach's castle to save her from Bowser.

Marcus Hutchins and Jamie Hankins, who were working from their homes in the U.K. for Los Angeles-based cybersecurity company Kryptos Logic, had just stopped a global cyberattack dead in its tracks.

Hours after the disruption began to break on broadcast news networks, Hutchins — who at the time was only known by his online handle @MalwareTech — became an “accidental hero” for inadvertently stopping the cyberattack by registering a web domain found in the malware’s code.

The internet, still reeling from the damage, had gotten off lightly.

The two researchers, at the time both in their early 20s, had saved the internet from a powerful nation-state attack launched by an enemy using hacking tools developed by the West.

Puffy eyed and sleep deprived, they knew the domain had to stay up at all costs.

British prime minister Theresa May called it an “international cyberattack,” one the government seemed powerless to stop.

HBO's upcoming teen-focused drama, "Euphoria," speaks more directly to young people than the network's other adult series.

The show, starring Zendaya and executive produced by Drake, comes as HBO is trying to grow its audience under the umbrella of AT's WarnerMedia.

The series, which premieres on Sunday in the US, takes an unflinchingly look at the struggles of young adults, including sex, drugs, identity, relationships, and social media, through the lens of 17-year-old high-school student, Rue Bennett, who is returning to school and life after a drug overdose and summer away at rehab.

Despite its provocative depiction of high school, early reviews of "Euphoria" have praised the stunning visuals, performances by its young stars, including Zendaya, and direction.

The median ages of the 10 most watched HBO series live during that time were between 46 and 61, with "Game of Thrones" having the youngest and "Real Time with Bill Maher" having the oldest median age.

The young-adult shows are hitting HBO at a time when the network is trying to grow its TV and streaming audience, after its parent company, WarnerMedia, was acquired by AT last year.
