Pokemon Unite is here, and it’s almost surprising just how much fun it is to play. Pokemon Unite can probably best be described as a casual MOBA that borrows elements from more hardcore games in the genre like League of Legends and Dota 2. Even though it isn’t as complex as either of those games, strategies for winning matches in … Continue reading

I love it when companies go public. I am never more excited than when I get to read a mandatory S-1 filing for the first time. Anything could be in there! Maybe the company has wildly more people using its products than I would have guessed. Maybe the company is surprisingly profitable. Maybe the company is WeWork!

Anyway, there is a new Robinhood regulatory oopsie in the news, and it’s made me even more eager to find out what’s lurking in that document. If I do not get the Robinhood S-1 soon, I will die. The company has confidentially filed to go public, but what fun is confidentiality? There might be some juicy shit in there!

Here’s the shape of the new thing: Robinhood allows customers to trade fractions of a share...

In June this year, Reddit began a huge campaign to remove hateful content from its site, blocking communities that engaged in hate speech and harassment. In an update on its progress today, the company says it’s banned nearly 7,000 subreddits (including repeat offenders) resulting in an 18 percent drop in users posting hateful content.

“While I would love that number to be 100 percent, I’m encouraged by the progress,” writes Reddit user u/worstnerd, a member of the company’s Safety team.

The progress is part of a sea change at Reddit after the site introduced new policies that explicitly ban hate speech and promised to enforce them rigorously. Reddit has...

It's still totally bananas, though

Column  One of the many joys of blockchain is that it generates even more heat online than a Chinese Bitcoin mine pumps into the atmosphere. This month's posterchild is the NFT, the Non-Fungible Token, which is seen by all the right-thinking fold as practically the fundamental particle of crypto-scam physics.…

They're pretty shit costumes mind you, but if you're pushed for time because you weren't more organised, you can forget knocking out a cosplay-level ensemble.

Of course, part of the charm of last-minute costumes is the haste with which they're thrown together, so just focus on your hair and makeup, and let us do the hard work of rounding up ideas for you.

You're going to be out partying all night and possibly crashing at someone's house afterwards, so why make do with a cold, bare, sofa, when you can bring your bed with you?

This is a legit costume suggested by our editor Tom, who donned a sleeping bag for one of his own spooky shenanigans.

If you already have a sleeping bag on hand, this one takes absolutely no effort whatsoever save for fastening it around your midriff with a belt, string, or a load of tape.

Cardboard box disguises are a staple of the Metal Gear Solid series - as much as big red exclamation points - so if you're after a quick and dirty video game-themed costume, you'll be hard pushed to find anything as fuss-free as this.

“GPT-3 is not a mind, but it is also not entirely a machine. It’s something else: a statistically abstracted representation of the contents of millions of minds, as expressed in their writing.” Regini Rini, Philosopher  In recent years, the AI circus really has come to town and we’ve been treated to a veritable parade of technical aberrations seeking to dazzle us with their human-like intelligence. Many of these sideshows have been “embodied” AI, where the physical form usually functions as a cunning disguise for a clunky, pre-programmed bot. But they definitely created a national security issue by bringing their smartphones along with them and refusing to give them up.

Microsoft has a new plan to protect firmware in Windows PCs from hacks, called “secured-core PCs.” A county in Georgia had a plan to use license plate detectors to reduce crime, but experts aren’t convinced it worked as advertised.

And Russians have rapidly evolved their plans to execute so-called false flag hacks, making their attacks look like another sophisticated adversary pulled them off.

We talked you through making your social media posts private when you want them to be.

We also explored technology’s role in the ongoing Hong Kong protests—on both sides—and ran through some quality password manager options.

Lastly, set aside some time this weekend to read this in-depth profile of secretary of state Mike Pompeo, who finds himself at—or at least near—the center of the increasingly alarming Ukraine investigation.

India’s vernacular language social network ShareChat has partnered with Snap Inc. to spice up its short video app, Moj. ShareChat said that starting today, Moj users will be able to use 30 of Snapchat’s lenses. Gaurav Mishra, SVP-Product, ShareChat, said that the company eventually aims to develop 400 lenses through this partnership over time. When brands start churning out weird shit like this, you know someone in the marketing department has got too much time on their hands.

We just wrapped up a Twitter poll about Brew Dog's half beef, half plant-based Hybrid Burger that the majority of you thought was totally pointless, and now this gem as reared its head; the Glenlivet Capsule Collection that boasts about not needing a glass, ice, or a cocktail stirrer to be enjoyed.

Because those single-use glasses and non-biogradeable cubes of frozen water are just causing havoc for the environment.

As for the cocktail stirrers, we all know that metal or recyclable wooden variants just don't exist, so thank fuck for these little globules.

The sustainable packaging-cum-delivery-method is a seaweed capsule designed by Notpla, and there are three different pods full of whisky cocktails to try, all incorporating The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve.

So now you can enjoy room temperature whisky tide pod cocktails on the go, at the office, or when you're all out of clean dishes and the will to live.
