A session description from Google I/O has confirmed that Chrome OS will be getting Android apps and access to the Google Play Store very shortly.

It seems as though this information has been revealed ahead of an official announcement at Google's developer conference, but it's exciting for Chrome OS users nonetheless.

One of the biggest complains about Chrome OS is that while web applications often have enough functionality for basic tasks, native applications can do more and provide a better experience.

The lack of native apps on the platform has kept some people from making the jump to Chrome OS, despite how cheap laptops that run the OS have become.

It's expected that many Android apps will require slight tweaking by developers to optimize the experience for laptops and desktops, however the vast majority of apps will work well enough on Chrome OS.

Android apps on tablets, for example, are notoriously poor due to a lack of developer optimization for larger displays.

It currently takes almost an entire day to fly from London to Sydney – and more than that if you count transfers and airport wait times.

But that flight length could be cut dramatically to just two hours, after a successful rocket test took the world a tantalising step closer to hypersonic commercial travel today.

"It is a game-changing technology... and could revolutionise global air travel, providing cost-effective access to space," scientist Alex Zelinsky said in a statement.

A series of 10 trials in total will be carried out, with some taking place at Norway's Andoya rocket range in addition to the Australian test centre.

The next flight test, scheduled for 2017, will involve a scramjet, a supersonic combustion engine, using oxygen from the atmosphere as a fuel source, making it lighter than those that require fossil fuels.

As well as potentially transporting goods and passengers over the Earth, a scramjet could be used to launch satellites, too.

As the rumours predicted, Google used the opening presentation of its annual developer conference, I/O, to reveal a new personal assistant aimed at the home.

Called Google Home and voice-activated with the entire power of Google s search engine built into it, Home is set to launch later this year.

The device connects to your home WiFi network and can also sync with Chromecast devices, meaning it can control TVs as well as other connected devices including speakers and smart appliances.

The device has a striking similarity function-wise to Amazon s Echo, which launched last year – something even Google CEO Sundar Pichai referenced when announcing the device.

At the heart of Home is the updated and supposedly more intelligent Google app software and the new Google Assistant.

This is said to be better at understanding context and able to offer better proactive suggestions to users as a result.
