What WiFi Could Be Ten Years From Now

Do you remember the days before WiFi?

It’s hard to believe just how advanced technology has become in our lifetime— and how rapidly it’s continuing to progress. These technological developments have benefited countless communities across the globe, revolutionized industries, and changed the way our society functions.

When it comes to WiFi technology, the possibilities feel even more infinite; it’s a field with endless opportunities for growth and further optimization. What will it look like in ten years? Nobody can say for sure— but given how quickly the technology is accelerating, we have a few predictions.

Unlimited Underground Access

This exciting technology is already in action, and one can expect that it will continue to progress and benefit more people and industries. Even today, we’ve seen underground WiFi make its way to the mining industry. Recently, Anglo American pioneered this technology, bringing a connection all the way down into the mines. By doing this, they’ve removed much of the danger associated with the industry; with underground WiFi, there is far less risk of miners becoming injured or lost in a shaft. By 2029, one could expect that underground WiFi would seem less as a revolutionary idea and more as a necessary safety precaution. All mines, underground tunnels, and transport systems will likely have swift digital access— and a higher sense of safety.

Instant Connections, Everywhere

Already, plenty of public spaces have WiFi, but it’s often patchy, slow, and hard to connect. A decade from now, it’s easy to assume that these issues will have been ironed out— and that the costs of connecting devices will change. As a result, it will likely be a given that public and outdoor spaces will have fast, reliable WiFi— and it’ll be free.

WiFi Well Beyond Today’s Devices

A stove that speaks recipes to you as you cook? A GPS-optimized collar that helps you find a lost pet?  It’s all possible. As technology continues to expand, so does The Internet of Things, a network of previously “everyday” objects that can now connect to the internet. Already, we’ve seen things like WiFi-connected household appliances and other unexpected items. In a decade, far more objects will be connected.

Stronger, Faster, and Better Than Ever

Internet quality, in general, will be far better a decade from now. Connecting to WiFi likely be instant and frustration-free, with no chance of cutting out.

Sky-High Scrolling

Today, a fraction of airlines offer WiFi, often at a high price.  In the future, it's easy to imagine that all airplanes will be outfitted with complimentary WiFi, in-seat tablets, and plenty of ways to entertain themselves and stay connected while sailing the skies.

Under the Sea

Underwater WiFi will continue to change, benefiting military forces who use submarines, as well as civilians who want to live-stream their scuba diving experiences.

Smarter Road Trips

By 2029, it can be imagined that all cars will have WiFi, allowing for many exciting technologies and hence more advanced navigation, safer journeys, or even ways to effectively communicate with other drivers.

A Safer, More Connected World

Ten years ago, we had never heard of ridesharing apps, mobile-based social media platforms, smartwatches, or phone-based GPS. All of these technologies have made our world safer and easier to live in. It’s thrilling to imagine what leaps and bounds the tech and WiFi industry is bound to make in the coming decade— and what impact it will make on our society.
