Cyber security incident response training for Law Enforcement

As we roll into a new decade, we must be prepared for the advances and the threats that come as a result of technological advancement. The last decade saw an exponential rise in technological advancement including the development of the cloud, connected devices, the rise of AI and machine learning and many other developments that have shrunk the world and brought people closer. But with this development have arisen many security risks and threats that will need to be dealt with. As there is an increase in cyber-attacks daily on organizations and critical governmental installations, there is a need for updated cyber security incident response training programs and IT cyber security training that will help organizations, employees and all stakeholders to be prepared to deal with such attacks and to be able to safeguard important and critical data, and this is all the more critical for Law enforcement to be able to deal with such incidents which are raised on an almost daily basis.

Why is this so? Many experts believe that this will see an increase in the number of phishing attacks, and that organizations must step up their security mechanisms to be able to deal properly with these attacks. As technology advances, it becomes much more easier to clone official emails and people, and organizations and employees can fall for such mails if they are not aware of the trends and have not received appropriate IT security training that has been updated for this year, and this can pose a huge problem for law enforcement, as they will have to deal with this threat. Phishing attacks cause the industry to lose millions if not billions in revenue. Hackers use phishing attacks in order to gain access to critical data in the organizations such as login credentials, financial information, social security numbers and so forth, and get them onto the dark web marketplace, and sold for financial gain. These attacks can sometimes be sponsored by governmental agencies engaged in cyber terrorism with another country.

As law enforcement, there needs to be enhanced training with regard to the fact that every cyber security crime does not happen in a vacuum, and that there are organizations and people, whose data is on the line, and therefore, the response time as well as the efficiency in which law enforcement is able to track the threat and get the culprits responsible along with retribution for the damage caused due to such incidents, there needs to be proper real world training imparted to law enforcement. Procedures and guidelines to appropriately deal with cyber security incidents can only come after the law enforcement professionals are exposed to real world attack scenarios with the use of cyber range simulation on a cyber range platform, that checks their abilities and response time, and produces a proper assessment of their abilities. This data can then be used by the appropriate agency to impart training and development of the professionals to improve their abilities and skillsets in become better at cyber security.
