How to Choose the Correct type of Labelling for your Product

There are over 50 types of labels and within each there are further classifications that make them different. It is often seen that people get confused with such a huge amount of choice of labels available in the market. While some labels need a different machine and a large set up, others can be modified with your existing machines. Also, some of these labels are useful for a particular product only while others like the in-mold label or a wrap around label are much more versatile in nature.

The in-mold ones are pre-printed polypropylene (PP) labels that are placed inside the mold of the container. The molten PP is dropped into the mold and fused with the container while curing. This enables them to be molded as per the shape of the end product just like the ones we see in butter tubs.

Various techniques like injection moulding, blow moulding and thermoforming are employed for these labels. These labels provide a large area for printing of high resolution images while also providing the options to decorate the container on all sides with one single labelling technique.

They also resist humidity and large changes in temperature. They have been found to be the best solution for such plastic containers that carry frozen or refrigerated products. They are also scratch resistant, do not crack and do not wrinkle which is appreciated for marketing purposes. Marketing and sales people love these as they allow the use of a range of different materials including lacquers that helps differentiate the product on the shelf.

They also allow a wide range of design changes to be added or removed quickly through an automated process leading to no production loss. As they can be produced in a single step, they save a huge amount of time, money, energy and space otherwise spent to store blank containers and their transport. The in-mold label is also environmentally friendly as it can be recycled along with the container.

As the name suggests, the wrap around label is applied on the container instead of being a part of the container. They extend to the entire container and usually have a small overlap where they are glued or stuck together in a fashion. They are most popularly used on various bottles and jars that come in small cylindrical shapes.

They provide an uncluttered look to the product while being a cost effective product labelling technique especially when the product is well known to the public. They can also be supported with additional labels as and when required for promotional or brand enhancement offers.

As these labels never come in contact with the product they are much cheaper to produce. They also have superior anti static properties that allows for a reliable and efficient labelling process. And they can be used in high print machines as they are abrasion resistant with non curling prints and cut labels that support the process. They also can be made with materials that remain unaffected by chemicals, temperature fluctuations and mechanical factors while retaining their design.
