Garmin Instinct Solar: An In-Depth Analysis

The new edition of the popular rough & tough outdoor watch will run on solar energy! The Garmin Instinct came and rocked the sports watch world, back in 2018. It is a tough, sturdy watch and you could wear it out in the most adventurous situations without worrying. And although Garmin has a whole series for backcountry watches, Instinct has created a niche for itself amongst watch enthusiasts. Soft on the pocket, but looks hard on your wrists.

What’s good?

  • Runs on solar power.
  • Lasting battery life.
  • GPS Enabled.
  • Features sports tracking and navigation .
  • Cheaper than Fenix.

What’s not so good?

  • A little heavier.
  • Solar energy does not add on that much value as one might believe .
  • Costs double than the original one.

And now it’s time for the successor to enter

Garmin has launched a second version of the watch: Instinct Solar. The new watch has a Power Glass which supports solar charging, thus the name, Instinct Solar. Solar power is a good addition to an already near-perfect product. But does it add as much value as Garmin and the huge price jump indicate?

The Look

If you’re in the market for something like an Instinct, you’re not gonna find a small-sized watch. Instinct Solar is measured at 1.75 inches on the face and 0.25 inches deep. So, not small. It takes up a good part of any wrist, especially if you have a smaller one. But the comfort is still at the Garmin level, and the size supports an adventurous lifestyle. You won’t have to think about knocking it on a car door accidentally or going through the rain since it is waterproof up to 100 meters.

The Display

The display is essentially where Instinct saves everyone money over the elite Fenix range. Equipped with almost the same features, this display is a basic black and white memory in pixel type. Around the display run a thin bezel that contains the instructions for the watch’s button system. Garmin has a five-button system that people find easier to understand than most.

The battery life isn’t that much better-y

Solar charging still cannot be used as an alternative against conventional charging methods. Thus, it doesn’t act as a replacement for plugging the device in. You are heavily dependent on time spent outside for solar charging although the makers claim that Instinct Solar will also charge from indoor light. But the claim remains a decorative one. When the power glass is directly under the sun, solar charging works the best as was obvious to happen. But you can’t keep it outside to charge as Garmin suggests. That’s how you lose things.

There’s a battery saver mode in which the watch offers only basic functions, but increases your battery life. You can also use the Power Manager to personalize how you want to use your charge.

Garmin Instinct is especially known for being one of the most rugged watches available. And the second debutant of the series lives up to the name. If you’re looking to go for a casual backcountry adventure, you don’t need a big glowing display. All you need is a to-and-fro tracker that accurately tells you where you are and where you need to be.

For the adventurer in you

Garmin Solar also features different surf and tactical versions, equipped with respective sport-specific features like a dedicated surfing activity tracker and tide data. But if you aren’t very specific with sporting choices in life, the Instinct Solar carries plenty of features to keep you busy and informed. You can track different activities and select which one you’ll be doing and the watch captures your movements about the selected activity.

Other additions that could interest buyers in the Instinct Solar would feature a Pulse Oximeter that measures your blood oxygen levels and Body battery, a Garmin-specific metric used to measure your energy level. It uses an algorithm that considers different body demographics like activity, stress level, heart rate variability, and sleep amount and quality.

Conclusion

The only thing that the watch plunges in majorly is the price point. The additional features aren’t worth the amount that has been hiked. Solar charging doesn’t improve the battery all that much. So, it is difficult to suggest this variant over the previous cheaper ones.
