Why is backing up your data still important?

Backing up the content and data of your precious website is important in case you have a problem with your web server or are facing a problem that breaks your website and need to restore it as quickly as possible.

It doesn't matter what kind of site you have. Losing data will be equally offensive both for a blog with average traffic and for a large commercial project. For the latter, this is generally not permissible since your money and your business depend on it.

A good website backup tool will allow you to back up the files on your website and save them in a format that can be easily restored by the web host in case of a problem.

If your online store is large enough, then you need to provide for the possibility of backing up absolutely all critical data. This possibility should be foreseen at the stage of website development.

If your website uses a database of any kind, it is important to make sure that a backup program backs up your database. If your site is running on a content management system, it will most likely have a database that will need to be backed up.

The two most popular ways to provide website backup software are local backup software and remotely hosted services.

Website backup software
Website backup software can be installed on your computer, just like many other programs that you use. The website backup is then downloaded to your computer so you can save it to your computer hard drive, USB, or CD.

Some popular website software that you can download for Windows is SiteVAULT, which supports website files and MySQL database backups.

Remote backup software
Remote backup services are provided by a company that will allow you to create an account on their site and enter your site details. The backup service will create a backup of your site and store it on their server for your access.

Content management system
Many of the popular content management systems, such as Joomla and Wordpress, have add-ons that were written specifically for the purpose of backing up site files and data for a site managed by that content management system. These backup add-ins work much like a remote backup service, but run on your own website. For Joomla enabled websites, AkeebaBackup offers a solution that will back up files and data on your Joomla website.

Remember to back up websites regularly to keep your site running smoothly. When you least expect it, things can go wrong, and a ready-to-restore backup can save you a lot of time and frustration, and losing a lot of data can also cost your business money.
