If you’re an IT student, chances are you’ve already embarked on your tech job search. The sooner, the better.  Technology internships and technology jobs used to be very different things but in this competitive industry, companies have blurred the lines between them. IT recruiters now apply different strategies to find talent for their companies.

Companies often exploit applicants by labelling jobs as internships. No surprises that the workload is that of a fulltime employee, while the pay scale is that of an intern.  IT students still apply for these roles, treating them as an opportunity and a step towards a permanent job. This doesn’t always happen. With few exceptions, the end of the internship spells the end of the relationship, and it’s back to the tech job search again.

Some mature organizations apply professional and ethical policies in their internship programs. These organizations aim to hire developers after evaluating them during the internship. Such internships closely resemble the probation period of a proper job. The appointed interns are assigned proper projects, they report to top software engineers. They are encouraged to understand the process. And with time their responsibilities build up. This way, interns get a chance to adjust to a professional work environment. If an intern shows potential he/she is offered an entry-level job in the organization straight away.

Pay Scale

You can never expect good pay from an internship. Many organizations pay nothing to an intern or just a small stipend which only covers their meals and transportation expenses. It is certainly not enough to fully support oneself whereas the salary offered in technology jobs is significantly higher. The salary also includes various allowances, medical insurance and other perks. In 2019, the average pay of a software developer was $108,080 and a top developer probably earned way more than this.

Duration

Internships are mostly targeted towards students. So the duration of an internship is a few months long, adjusted for semester breaks.

Technical Recruiting Process

The hiring process for a job is quite lengthy. IT recruiters need to ascertain that an applicant is the most suitable candidate for the job. The process usually includes several interviews, sometimes tests or assessments to examine the skills of the applicant and lastly a negotiation as well. The internship recruitment process is fairly simple and short, usually all the requirement are fulfilled in a single session.
