Who is Mark Madsen?

Mark Madsen, the head coach of the Utah Valley men's basketball team, is in his second season.

Madsen is a two-time NBA champion, a former head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, and a member of the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame. In UVU's 16-year Division I history, he is just the third head men's basketball coach. During the 2019-20 season, Madsen had a fruitful first year at UVU.

His team won 11 games despite injuries and hardship, including a 68-62 victory over North Dakota State, which ended the season 13-1 at home, won the Summit League, and was on its way to the NCAA Tournament. During the 2019-20 season, UVU was the only team to beat the Bison at home. During the 2019-20 season, the Wolverines were tough on the track, winning at North Dakota State, UAB, Wyoming, and Grand Canyon.

  • Madsen's 2019-20 team became the first to sweep Grand Canyon since the 2013-14 WAC Championship UVU team, winning 73-69 at GCU and 92-80 at home.
  • The Wolverines also came close to beating No. 9 Kentucky on the road, rallying from a 16-point deficit to cut Kentucky's lead to just one point, 68-67, with 3:26 remaining.
  • TJ Washington of UVU scored 22 points and was named one of ESPN SportsCenter's Top-10 plays the following night.

The skills and the games

UVU set the all-time single-season team blocks record with 157 swats during Madsen's first season. With 81 swats, Emmanuel Olojakpoke set the single-season UVU block record and the single-season UVU field goal percentage record at 69.1 percent. Brandon Averette of UVU was named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team.

  • Due to the corona virus, Madsen's first year was cut short. Because of the pandemic, the Wolverines were unable to compete in the WAC Tournament.
  • Madsen spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers before joining Utah Valley. He won two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers (2001 and 2002), and he also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Career Of Mark Madsen

Following his playing career, Madsen worked as an assistant coach for the Utah Flash of the NBA G League in 2009-10 before returning to Stanford University and earning an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2012. In the same year, he was hired as an assistant coach on Johnny Dawkins' staff at Stanford, where he worked in recruitment, opponent game planning, and player ability growth during the 2012-13 season.
