React vs. Angular vs. Vue.js: Which is the best choice in 2021?

JavaScript frameworks are evolving rapidly, which means today we have frequently updated versions of Angular, React.js, and another market player, Vue.js. Let's take a glimpse at Google Trends for the last five years of demand.

.

From mid-2017, these queries leveled out, and React started to grow and get closer to Angular's demands. The Vue.js framework was still not very popular, but it has increased its presence in the framework market a bit, showing further growth potential. In the last few years, Angular and React have almost matched each other, which means that they are the most used front-end frameworks in the market.

Overall, React, and Angular are developing organically, with relatively similar dynamics. If we try to predict the demand for front-end frameworks, we can see a positive trend for React and a slight downward trend for Angular. Vue.js is still a work in progress, but its convenient architecture suggests that it too will grow, perhaps just a little less than the powerful frameworks.

We also analyzed how many jobs worldwide require specific knowledge of a particular framework. As a source, we looked at Indeed.com and, based on more than 60 000 job vacancies, and we got the following breakdown.

React vs. Angular vs. Vue.js

Considering the following data, we decided to share the main pros and cons of each front-end framework and help technology professionals or engineers choose the best one for their development needs.

Advantages and disadvantages of Angular

Founded in 2009, Angular is a super cool JavaScript MVVM framework that is great for building highly interactive web applications.

The advantages of Angular:

  • New features like improved RXJS, the faster compilation (3 seconds), new HttpClient launch

  • Detailed documentation allows all developers to get all the information they need without asking their colleagues. However, this requires more time for training.

  • Bidirectional data binding, which allows the application to behave uniquely, minimizing the risk of errors

  • MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) allows developers to work separately on the same part of the application, using the same data set.

  • Dependency injection of component-related functions with modules and modularity in general

The disadvantages of Angular:

Migration issues can arise when moving from an older version to the latest one.

The latest version, released in 2019, is Angular 2+. Today, Angular uses by popular companies such as Google, Microsoft Office, and Upwork.

For example, Angular provides Google with a highly functional framework for building more extensive applications. It uses to develop the Google Cloud Console. Microsoft Office was able to launch two standalone applications using the Angular framework. For Upwork, the framework uses to provide a responsive experience for members.

Pros and cons of React.js

ReactJS is a JavaScript library that was opened-sourced by Facebook in 2013 and is suitable for building huge web applications where data changes regularly.

Benefits of React.js.

Easy to learn: React is very easy to understand due to its simple syntax. Engineers only need to recall their HTML writing skills and do not need to know TypeScript in-depth like with Angular.

  • High flexibility and maximum responsiveness
  • The virtual DOM (Document Object Model) allows documents in HTML, XHTML, and XML formats to be arranged in a tree, making it easier for web browsers to accept them when parsing different elements of web app.
  • In combination with ES6/7, ReactJS can handle high loads with ease.
  • Downward data-binding means that child elements cannot affect the parent data in this kind of data flow.
  • It is a 100% open-source JavaScript library, with many updates and improvements made every day thanks to developers' contributions worldwide.
  • The data executed on the user side can be easily represented on the server-side simultaneously, making it lightweight.
  • Migrating between versions is generally very easy, and much of the process can be automated using the 'codemods' provided by Facebook.

Drawbacks of React.js.

Lack of official documentation: Due to the super-fast development of ReactJS, there is no place for proper documentation. It's a bit of a mess now, with many developers creating their documentation without a systematic approach.

React is not a specialist, so developers sometimes have too many options.

It takes time to learn. It means that React JS requires a deep knowledge of how to integrate user interfaces into MVC frameworks.

| Companies using React

The fact that some of the biggest billion-dollar companies are using React proves just how good the framework is. Codesandbox, Uber, and Pinterest. However, Facebook is at the heart of it.

By and large, the above services have a lot of traffic, which is why React is the perfect tool for them: React allows them to build and maintain their mobile applications more quickly. It also allows these companies to develop their applications while using fewer resources. It is the best front-end library in existence.

| Pros and Cons of Vue.js

Vue.js is a JavaScript framework released in 2013 and is perfect for creating adaptive user interfaces and sophisticated single-page applications.

| Advantages of Vue.js.

Enhanced HTML - Vue.js has similar features to Angular, allowing you to optimize the processing of HTML blocks using various components.

Detailed documentation - Vue.js has very detailed documentation, which speeds up the learning curve for developers and dramatically decreases the time it takes to develop applications with only a basic knowledge of HTML and JavaScript.

Adaptability - Similarities in design and architecture to Angular and can make it easy to switch from other frameworks to Vue.js quickly.

Amazing integration - Can use Vue.js to build single-page applications as well as web interfaces for more challenging apps. The main takeaway can quickly integrate small interactive pieces into your existing infrastructure without negatively impacting the overall system.

Massive scaling - Thanks to its simple structure, Vue.js helps you develop large, reusable templates that you can create without spending extra time.

Small size - Vue.js is around 20KB in size while maintaining the speed and flexibility that allows for much better performance than other frameworks.

| Drawbacks of Vue.js.

Lack of resources. Vue.js still has a smaller market share than React and Angular, so knowledge sharing for this framework is still in its infancy.

Risk of inflexibility. Vue.js can have problems when integrating it into large projects, we don't have experience with possible solutions yet, but we will soon.

Chinese background. Because Vue.js has a Chinese experience, many elements and descriptions in Chinese make it partially more complex in the development phase. Still, nevertheless, more and more material is being translated into English.

| When to use Angular

If we compare the popularity of Angular and React among developers, React is slightly more popular than Angular. Let's compare Angular and Vue.js and see when to use them.

  • Angular is more beneficial for large and complex projects.
  • If you want reliable scalability, Angular is the right choice.
  • If you have time to learn Typescript, use Angular.

When to use Vue.js

If we compare Vue.js and Angular, which one is better, some disadvantages of Angular might make you choose Vue.js. Therefore, we should use Vue.js in the following cases.

  • If you need a high-performance application
  • You lack qualified front-end developers.
  • Your team does not have enough time to learn new technologies.

| When to use React

Which is better in the battle between React.js and Angular? React and Angular are very close in popularity, with React being slightly more popular. Despite React's shortcomings, React's excellent ecosystem makes it a good solution for

  • Projects where can be integrated reusable components
  • Tasks that want to create a simple front-end
  • Projects that require maximum scalability
  • Projects with short delivery times.

| Conclusions.

There is not much difference between the frameworks to choose from; it just takes some time to get used to them. Our company develops our skills mainly with React.js and Angular, but we also have Vue.js on board.
