We look forward to bringing this team together to compete for the National League trophy, said U.S. National Team Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. It has been a great year for our team and unprecedented success winning multiple league and cup titles. Our focus now is to continue that success at the National Team level.
Trophy Room
While the U.S. National Team will be competing for two trophies this summer, the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup begins in July with several players who have already won silverware with their clubs. In total, nine players are represented on the list with their titles.
Brenden Aronson did the double, winning the Austrian Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup. Zach Steffen also won two trophies at Manchester City, where he helped the club win the English League Cup and became the first US international to win the Premier League.
Sergiño Dest (Barcelona) won the Copa del Rey in Spain, while Italy's Weston McKennie (Juventus) and Germany's Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), and Belgium's Mark McKenzie (Genk) also won their respective trophies. For more to know about Football World Cup Hospitality Packages click here.
Tim Vea became French league champion with Lille, the team's first win since the 2010-11 season, while Ethan Horvat and Club Brugge became champions for the second year in a row and Jordan Sibacher helped the youth team win the Swiss league for the fourth year in a row.
Still, a major title is at stake, and the U.S. national team will gather in front of their screens on the evening of May 29 to watch their teammates hoist the Champions League trophy when Christian Pulisic and Steffen clash in the final between Chelsea and Manchester City.
Top four in the big five leagues
Members of the U.S. national team rounded out the top four in each of Europe's top five leagues, starting with the league titlists in England (Stephane, Manchester City) and France (Vea, Lille). In Germany, U.S. internationals took three of the top four spots: Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig, second), Gio Reina (Borussia Dortmund, third) and John Brooks (Wolfsburg, fourth).
Sergiño Dest finished his first season at Barcelona with the Catalan club in third place. Christian Pulisic and Chelsea safe fourth place on the final matchday, an accomplishment, and position matched by Weston McKennie and Juventus. All eight players will be in the UEFA Champions League next year.
Summer transfers
Due to the global pandemic, the U.S. national team entered the summer with a lack of matches in official competition, playing just four games since the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Overall, the 23-man squad averages just under six caps in the official competition, with a total of 10 players looking for their first call-up. Leading the group is 2014 World Cup veteran DeAndre Yedlin (27), followed by Christian Pulisic (24) and Tim Ream (19).
The road to the Final Four
The U.S. men's national team finished first in Group A of the Concacaf Nations League with 3-1 wins over Cuba and Canada to advance to the quarterfinals. Weston McKenney, Jordan Morris, and Josh Sargent rounded out the six different scorers for the U.S. with three goals each.
McKenney and Morris entered the history books against Cuba on Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C. McKenney scored the fastest hat trick for the U.S. national team after just 13 minutes of play, while Morris scored a goal and contributed three assists. The U.S. will have a chance to face one of its closest Conquistadores rivals in a friendly against Costa Rica on June 9 in Salt Lake City. This summer, the U.S. national team holds a slim 17-16-5 advantage in the series in 38 games since 1975.
The following month, the U.S. team will compete in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup, seeking its seventh association title. The U.S. national team was placed in Group A with Canada, Martinique and a third-team determined via qualifying.
