Better Details of the new deal to holding up Crusaders coach Scott Robertson

Scott Robertson is about to re-sign with the New Zealand Rugby Team (NZR), but before some more detailed details are settled.

It is understood that they are considering the contract period, the withdrawal clause and the process of NZR appointing the All Blacks coach after the 2023 World Cup.

Robertson missed out on Ian Foster's top spot at the end of 2019. He just finished his fifth season as head coach of the Crusaders and his contract with NZR expired at the end of this year.

All signs indicate an agreement will be reached, and Crusader Chief Executive Colin Mansbridge told media last month "not far off".

The winner of the three Super Rugby champions and the two Super Rugby Aotearoa peaks has also repeatedly stated that he wants to stay and his desire to coach the All Blacks still stands.

But, the nomination process after the 2023 World Cup is something Robertson must consider as he prepares for the future.

Foster was not confirmed as Steve Hansen's successor until December 11, 2019. Since the World Cup in France does not end until October 21, the 2023 process may again be postponed until later this year.

Drawing to 2023 and missing the top spot again could put him in a tricky position on the next move.

Obviously, he will be signed until 2024, but if he doesn't get a job with the All Blacks, he could consider.

While the NZR has plenty of records, the coaches who are tied in Super Rugby with a 71-3-9 record are not expected to be delayed.

This includes the ongoing Silver Lake saga, the set-up of next year's Super Rugby game, and the fact that the current All Blacks coaching staff has not signed after the end of this year.

Robertson's forward coach Jason Ryan signed with NZR and the Crusaders until 2024 last month.
