What is DDos?

What is DDOS? This question may seem odd and even an exaggeration but it is quite a common question amongst computer users. A denial-of-Service attack in computer science is a cyber-attempt to block access to a system or application by deliberately or accidentally depleting system resources. In computer jargon, this is called a DoS (denial-of-Service) attack. In computing, a DoS attack is an unsuccessful attempt to cause non-recoverable physical damage to data, hardware, software, or any other medium through the execution of specific commands. In computer lingo, a DoS attack is similar to a virus attack.

 

There are many forms of DDoS attacks. Some of the most common include the following: a distributed denial of service, or DoS; a port flooding attack, or BOP; and a Distributed Denial of Service attacks or DDOS. With a DoS attack, the attacker uses the system resources in a manner that is intentional and designed to bring down the operation of the target computer or server. The DoS attacks are done by employing various types of attacks like; port flooding, or BOP, or multiple internal or external attacks. It can also be carried out by an overload of a network with the aim of bringing down the connectivity.

 

Distributed denial of service or the DoS is considered one of the most sophisticated and targeted attacks. It typically attacks a single server or application by flooding it with traffic that is of too much volume to efficiently utilize by the target application. If the application is not specifically dedicated to processing huge traffic for processing, then the application will eventually be forced to use CPU processing resources which can result in slower processing and general poor performance. If the targeted server is used for game playing or online file sharing applications, the attacks can have adverse effects on the user's experience of using that particular application.

 

There are many advantages to using specially crafted DDoS attacks against legitimate users of the same server. For example, attackers may use a DDoS assault to send thousands or even millions of email messages to a large number of ISP subscribers or customers. This method can be used to spread unsolicited advertisements and spam through ISP networks. Moreover, the DoS attacks can easily damage or destroy the reputation of an ISP by reducing its services and products, or even forcing them to seek a sever connection break.

 

Apart from the above-mentioned advantages, a DDoS attack can be very useful to attackers if they want to test the effectiveness of their latest innovations. This is because an IP spoofing attack enables the attacker to test the robustness and efficiency of new attack software. The IP spoofing attack is quite similar to what is known as a DoS attack wherein the attacker sends fake packets to different IP addresses. However, in the case of this spoofed packets, the target PC receives the genuine packets, but with the characteristic of having been delivered from another IP address.

 

An IP spoofing attack also allows attackers to test various security schemes. For example, if they want to test whether a server will allow them to bypass authentication, they may choose a server using a weak password. Then, if they succeed in bypassing the security, they can proceed to attack the server using an authentic user name and a strong password. They may also choose a server using a weak onion key rather than a password. By testing these attacks on a large number of valid IP addresses, the attackers can determine if a particular system will allow them to bypass security.

 

Apart from testing out an attack technique, attackers may also try to exploit the lack of knowledge of most web users when it comes to distinguishing between legitimate and spoofed Ddos. For instance, if a visitor to your site accidentally types the wrong domain name, you'll be able to exploit this mistake and obtain the information you need about your victim's online activities. Some well-known applications layer do use Application layer attacks, which means that they intercept the incoming traffic before the browser is given any chance to know what is happening.

 

In some cases, application-layer attacks are used by government agencies for the purposes of sabotage or national security. For example, it has been well documented that the US military often hacks into computer networks in order to track troop movements and identify enemy personnel. What is more difficult to detect and prevent are what is called "Ddos" - the malicious software used for carrying out the attacks.
