When you’re struggling with depression or other mental health issues, just getting out of bed can feel like an insurmountable task.
Read on for Mary Magalotti’s advice on making the day-to-day easier while you heal and recover.
Practice Self-Kindness
Many people with depression have trouble getting motivated to complete daily tasks. If you’re experiencing this, remember that you are not useless, or lazy – depression changes our brain and makes things more difficult.
Focus on doing what you can, especially eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep. Don’t beat yourself up for being less productive some days – your healing is the most important thing.
Do the Things You Love
Although you can’t force yourself to have fun, you can try and give things a go. If there’s an activity you used to really enjoy, like baking, hiking, or art, set aside some time to pick it up again. Even if you don’t feel better right away, your mood will lift as you do something that releases endorphins – and you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment, too.
