6G: How will this mobile technology change everything?

Technology is constantly advancing. 5G is still deployed in a small proportion of places, but we can already look to the future version on the horizon: 6G. At the moment, if we look at the immediate future, it is estimated that only 2% of the world's population will end up with a 5G network by 2020. The rest, which represents the vast majority, will have 4G at most. But yes, we can already see news related to what awaits us in the coming years with 6G.

6G, the technology we already see in the distance
Although 5G is still years away from reaching all countries and being available to at least 50% of the world's population, we can already glimpse the first information about 6G.

Internet speed is a very important factor for users. As the years go by, our use of the Internet is constantly changing. This means that if a few years ago we could be satisfied with a certain speed, today we need much more. The same goes for network latency.

If we look at mobile technology, the changes in the last few years have been very important. We made a vital leap from 3G to 4G. This allowed us to be able to make higher quality video calls, download or upload large files to the network. Some tools that we could not use today with the previous network or that would be of very limited use, we can easily use with today's technology.

But 5G is going to bring very important changes. Of course speed is going to be present, as we are going to achieve rates that were unthinkable until now. We will be able to upload and download files much faster than today, as well as reduce latency by over 1ms. This will allow us to have more immediacy, to make use of tools such as video calls without cuts.

However, 6G is already on the horizon. At least if we look at the news coming out of trials we will see that some figures are already appearing.

Speeds of up to 1 Tbps
6G could reach speeds of up to 1 Tbps. Today, to give us an idea, the maximum speed we can have in our homes in Spain if we contract fibre optics is 1 Gbps. This is the best case scenario, as not many companies offer this speed.

6G would therefore have a speed 1000 times higher. It would undoubtedly offer a wide range of possibilities. We would be able to download and upload files almost instantly, regardless of size.

But of course, we have to bear in mind that this technology will be around for quite a few years. We will have to wait at least a decade before this network is really available to users. What will the Internet be like in 10 years' time? Will we need to use a bandwidth, an Internet speed, of these figures?

Latency of 0.1ms
Of course ping or latency will also be very present. We already know that Internet speed is not everything. For the connection to work properly, to be able to play online games, make video calls or surf, in short, we need latency to be as low as possible.

And yes, 6G is once again breaking records in this regard. At least on paper, with the information currently available, we could achieve a ping below 0.1ms.

It should be borne in mind that 5G is already going to break with everything we know so far. It will offer a latency of over 1ms, which is already a figure to be taken into account. This will allow many IoT devices to be adapted and work properly. It will offer a wide range of possibilities.

Location accuracy to the centimetre
But it will also offer almost millimetre accuracy in terms of location. We already know that the mobile network also helps with positioning, to better detect where we are when we use our mobile's GPS.

6G will take this to an extreme that has so far been impossible. We will be able to have location accuracy to the centimetre. This will undoubtedly be closely linked to virtual reality, to the use of technology to move around in autonomous vehicles. Something that seems utopian today but which may be a reality in 10-20 years' time.

Advanced security
A final point to bear in mind is that 6G will have much more advanced security. A way to prevent attacks of all kinds that could compromise our privacy.

We already know that security is a vital factor for users. There are many attacks that can affect us in one way or another.

In short, 6G will be a mobile technology that will bring important changes. We will still have to wait for years, but for the moment we can already glimpse on the horizon what some of the objectives will be. For now, we leave you with the uses of 5G.
