In today’s sports news, the International Olympic Committee (IOA) has announced the details of the “Olympics Project” in Mali and Senegal.
As a contribution to the Great Green Wall initiative which restores landscapes across Africa’s Sahel region, 355,000 trees will be planted across 90 villages in Mali and Senegal, covering an area of 2120 hectares.
The Olympic Forest will also contribute to local communities' economic security and food, and ensure economic, environmental and social benefits in areas that have been affected by floods, droughts and land degradation.
The International Olympic Committee has also made sports news headlines for committing to reduce its carbon emissions as per the Paris Agreement by 30 percent in 2024 and by 45 percent in 2030.
Olympic Forest also aims to increase local biodiversity and enable sustainable agricultural practices like agroforestry.
The IOC will work with Tree Aid to create the Olympic Forest, a non profit organization with over 30 years of experience in tackling poverty and climate change by growing trees and restoring land.
